Giuseppe Magni (Italian/Florence, 1869-1956), "Mother and Daughter Feeding Chicks [Scena domestica con pollame]", c. 1900, oil on canvas, signed lower left, hand-inscribed in brown paint "Made in Italy" en verso of original canvas, 38 in. x 28 3/8 in., period frame. $10000/20000
Provenance: Sold to Benefit the Amarillo Museum of Art, Amarillo, TX.
Note: Born at Pistoia in the final year of the Risorgimento, or unification of Italy, Giuseppe Magni was trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence, where his master was the very celebrated Romantic-Realist painter Antonio Ciseri (1821-1891). Magni was an early success, already winning an international competition in 1900 (the approximate date of the painting offered here). His rather rare pictures are consistently devoted to domestic scenes around the peasant farmhouses of the Tusco-Emilian Apennines and foothills, most particularly to their closely observed interiors, of which the present example is one of his masterworks. He specialized in the depiction of young families, whose members are always treated with sympathy and touching warmth. His small oeuvre contains several close replications of subjects, and especially of settings; but whereas he sometimes painted simpler versions of the present kitchen interior—usually at smaller scale—he executed only one other recorded version of Feeding the Chicks (sold at Sotheby's New York, April 18, 2007, lot 129: a picture of almost exactly these same dimensions, oriented horizontally to include a door in the left-hand wall, but with very much less detail and finish).
In this picture, the out-of-doors is suggested only by a verdant glimpse through the window; in the corner, a large quarter-round earthenware pot holds fresh herbs, convenient to the fireplace; another large vessel or basket sits on a triangular shelf within the cooking embrasure, while pots and pans hang nearby, and a large copper jug stands on the window-shelf. The kitchen's furniture is restricted in this instance to one large and one small chair, plus the stool on which the mother sits. Her superb pyramidal composition is augmented by surely the finest figure of a child in all of Magni's work: posed with consummate grace, the daughter's pose is reminiscent of the best figural renditions of the Italian Renaissance. Clothed only in a simple white shift, her radiant blondness plays brilliantly against her mother's orange kerchief and dress, with a laced blue apron-like robe, white blouse, and orange-striped, blue-toed clogs: congruent bright patches of orange and blue appear in loose draperies thrown over the smaller chair. The chickens themselves are more tightly grouped by this painting's vertical format, and decisively linked to 'the hand that feeds them'. Throughout this enchanting picture—whose genial understanding and descriptive richness certainly place it among Magni's very best works—there appears an inexhaustible repertory of appealing detail, as well as a deeply satisfying domestic intimacy.
