- LOUIS APOL (1850-1936) DUTCHLouis Apol,
LOUIS APOL (1850-1936) DUTCHLouis Apol, (untitled) hauling firewood, oil on panel, 7" h x 10.5" w. Note: A prominent representative of the Hague School, Louis Apol specialized in winter landscapes. His winter scenes often included structures like fences or bridges to remind viewers of humanities presence within the natural world. In this painting, Apol uses loose brush strokes to depict a man hauling firewood through a snowy lane. The piece is illuminated by the soft light of a late winter afternoon. Like his counterparts in the Barbizon School, Apol worked to paint the natural scenes around him as they really were, demonstrating the shift from romanticism to realism at the turn of the century. Apol made a significant contribution to the work of the Hague School and many of his pieces can now be found in The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.
