EXCEPTIONAL LOUIS XVI REGULATOR WITH REMONTOIR D’éGALITé “ROYAL MODEL”, CIRCA 1785 Exceptional Louis XVI Regulator with Remontoir d’égalité “Royal Model”, circa 1785Clockmaker Robert Robin (1741-1799), the polychrome dial by Joseph Coteau(1740-1801), case attributed to Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1757-1843)Ormolou and glass case, hand-painted, jeweled and enameled porcelain dial with astrological zodiac cartouches, signed Coteau and Robin Hr.du Roy, pierced gilt brass hands, blued steel pointers for the mean time and calendar indications, sweeps second hand. Movement of month duration with calendar, equation of time, with remontoire, re-wound via Robin's pulley system, constant force, Graham dead-beat escapement, nine-rod compensated pendulum, striking on the solar hour and half hour on a single bell.Commentary: The inventory of the Château de Saint-Cloud made in January 1794 features two clocks in Marie-Antoinette’s pièce des nobles (room for receiving visiting nobility) that were not there during the previous inventory of 1789. One of them is probably the present example made by Robert Robin, clockmaker to the king, who signed the dial. However, the queen probably never saw this clock as she was not permitted to visit her castle after 1791. Around 1860, the clock was still, or again, at Saint-Cloud, in the bedroom of Empress Eugénie, who surrounded herself with objects that belonged, or were thought to have belonged, to Marie-Antoinette.Robert Robin (French, 1741-1799)was one of the finest clockmakers in France during the last quarter of the eighteenth century. He received a number of royal appointments during the reign of Louis XVI and managed to retain his standing during and after the French Revolution. He maintained the highest standards in design and construction, engaging the best cabinetmakers for his cases and the finest enamel painters for his dials. He served as the Horloger du duc Chatrtres (1778), Valet de Chambres-Horloger Ordinaire du Roi (1783), Horloger de Monsieur (1785), Valet de Chambres-Horloger Ordianire de la Reine (October 1, 1786), Horloger de la Répulique (1794), Horloger du Directoire (1796). His signature reads: “Robin Hr.du Roy.” This elegant design, which he introduced around 1780, was his most successful model.Joseph Coteau (1740-1801)regarded as the greatest enameler of all time, supplying dials for the most eminent horologists, including Antide Janvier (1751-1835), Robert Robin (1742-1809) and Ferdinand Berthoud (1727-1807). In 1780, Coteau was appointed ‘Peintre-émailleur du roi et de la Manufacture Royale de Sèvres, and by 1784 his production was considerable, receiving 4520 livres from the Manufacture de Sèvres for executed commissions.Examples of his work can be found in a number of European museums, including Mobilier National, Musee des Arts Decoratifs, Paris; Carnavelet Museum, Dijon Museum, and in London at the Wallace Collection and Victoria and Albert Museum.Watch Video
ADRIEN BARRÈRE [LE SIRE DE VERGY.] 1904. Before lettering.
55 1/8x77 1/8 inches. (140 x 196 cm.) Wall & Cie., Paris.
Condition B+: minor repaired tears and restored losses along vertical and horizontal folds; time-staining in margins and image. Two sheets.
"Le Sire de Vergy" was a parody operetta based on a medieval romance that the authors mocked and perverted for full comic value. Performed at the Théâtre des Variétés, the script was by the brilliant team of Robert de Flers and Caillavet. The music was composed by Claude Terrasse, a talented young composer who was connected to the nabis through marriage to Pierre Bonnard's sister, and is primarily remembered for composing the music for Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi. The cast was an exceptional assemblage of talent, and the poster was executed magnificently by Barrére. Using his trademark flat vivid colors, Barrére depicts a line-up of the stars on stage. His great caricatures (here in such large format) were enough for the people of Paris to identify the famous performers, who included Brasseur, Max Dearly, Eve Lavalliere (performing an Egyptian-style belly dance), Prince and others.

Note: First editions. A very attractive set of the complete account of Nicolas Baudin's expedition to Australia with the first detailed and complete map of the Australian continent. Sent by the French government in 1800, with orders to complete the survey of the coasts of Australia, Baudin employed Péron as a naturalist and Freycinet as cartographer.
The expedition reached Van Dieman's Land in 1802 which they surveyed before sailing for Sydney where they spent six months. The expedition then surveyed the entire southern coast of Australia before returning to Mauritius where Baudin died in late 1803. As Péron died before publication was complete the work was finished by Freycinet.

The mark was changed to 1860 (Goddens no. 2703) The central vase is based on a Sevres model "a de 1780, an example of which may be seen in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore, USA. The flanking vases are based on a Sevres model "De Cote de Paris", a pair of which may be seen at Waddesdon. It is recorded that Minton exhibited Sevres style vases of this type at te Great Exhibition staged at Crystal Palace in 1851, and it has been suggested that these vases may have formed part of that display

Fine Napoleon III Ormolu-Mounted Ebonized Cabinet, third quarter 19th century, of Louis XVI inspiration, the case with a pair of incised stamps "Grohe Freres Ebenistes Du Roi A Paris", the period noir de Mazy marble top over a case with a drawer over a glazed door, the returns with glass panels, adorned throughout with extraordinarily detailed ormolu mounts, the top edged with egg-and-dart ormolu, the door with a cast cartouche flanked by putti and arabesques, the pilasters with foliate-modeled scroll capitals over a trophy with a bird perched atop a quiver, the base blocks with deeply cast pierced foliate mounts over bun feet, the interior retaining its antique shelf lining, h. 42-3/4", w. 35", d. 15-1/2". Brothers Jean-Michel (b. 1804) and Guillaume Grohe (1808-1885), farmer's sons from the German Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt, had settled in Paris by 1827, dealing in general works of art. Jean-Michel married Swiss-born Christine-Charlotte Werner, the younger sister of renowned Restauration cabinetmaker Jean-Jacques Werner (1791-1849), and it is undoubtedly with Werner's guidance and tutelage that the Grohe brothers made their first forays into the sale and manufacture of fine furniture in 1829. Their success was immediate; an Egyptian Revival suite shown at the Industrial Exposition of 1834 was purchased by Princess Marie d'Orleans, and an octagonal ebony dresser shown at the 1844 Exposition won a gold medal. The workshop was formally incorporated as Grohe Freres in 1847, and the brothers were awarded the legion d'honneur at the 1849 Exposition. Their success and expansion continued unabated, with commissions for their revivalist furniture coming from King Louis-Philippe, Emperor Napoleon III and Empress Eugenie (who was particularly fond of their Louis XVI pieces). Jean-Michel retired to his home in the Parisian suburb of Montrouge in 1861; Guillaume continued the business alone. Queen Victoria became a client after Grohe's medal-winning entry at the London Exposition of 1862, and his furniture and bronzes at the 1867 Exposition were judged superior to those of the great Riesener. By 1878, he was the vice-president of the entire Exposition and member of the jury, admission and installation committees. He retired with his wife Emilie-Anne Prely to his home in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1884. With no successor (his only son died in infancy in 1849), the contents of his workshop were sold in February 1884; he died little more than a year later, on April 6, 1885. He and his brother remain among the finest French cabinetmakers of the century, having supplied every King, Emperor and President of France from the July Monarchy to the Third Republic. Examples of their work are conserved at the Chateau de Fontainebleau, the Musee de Canavelet, the Musee Conde a Chantilly, the Palais de Elysee, the Musee National de Chateau de Con and, of course, the Musee du Louvre.

FOLLOWER OF GERARD VAN SPAENDONCK(France/Dutch, 1746-1822)
Bouquet of Moss Roses and an Imperial Lily , unsigned, watercolor over pencil on vellum, 18-1/4 x 15 in.; 19th century gilt wood and composition frame, 23-1/4 x 20 in.
From The Hunt Institute of Botanical Documentation: "Gérard van Spaendonck (1746–1822) was born in Tilburg, Holland, and was influenced by the masters of Dutch flower painting. He apprenticed in Antwerp with Guillaume-Jacques Herreyns (1743–1827) from 1764 to 1769 and moved to Paris in 1769. By 1774 van Spaendonck was a designer for the Sévres porcelain factory, that same year he was appointed painter in miniature to King Louis XVI and became a popular instructor of the young ladies at the court of Versailles. From 1777 until his death, he exhibited at the Paris Salon and transformed the development of flower painting in France. His work was prized by collectors, such as Claude Henri Watelet (1718–1786), who helped him obtain the appointment of professeur de peintre de fleurs at the Jardin du Roi in 1780, where he contributed over 50 paintings on vellum to the collection between 1781 and 1785. Van Spaendonck was proficient in several mediums including charcoal, oil, gouache, watercolor and printmaking. In 1781 he also became a member of the l'Académie Royale (later l'Académie des Beaux-Arts) and was named conseiller in 1788. When the Jardin du Roi was reorganized in 1793 as the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, van Spaendonck was appointed professeur d'iconographie, a position that was created specifically for him. In this new post he was expected not only to continue the painting of the vélins (works on vellum) but also to find and train new talent to accurately portray plant subjects. Van Spaendonck was highly respected as an artist and a teacher and had a profound effect on his many students at both the Jardin and his private studio, including Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840), who was appointed his assistant in flower painting in 1794, and Pancrace Bessa (1772–1846)."

number 15 of 180 copies signed by miró on colophon. There was also an edition of 25 Roman-numbered hors commerce copies. A masterly livre d'artiste. The French writer Alfred Jarry is chiefly remembered as the creator of Ubu Roi (King Ubu). The play is a loose parody of Shakespeare's Macbeth, presenting the characters of mother and father Ubu, who plot to assassinate the King of Poland. The first commercial production opened on December 11, 1896 at the Théâtre de l'Oeuvre. It had a notorious debut: when the first line was spoken, 'Merdre' (Shitter), the audience caused such uproar that it took the stage manager nearly fifteen minutes to quiet the auditorium. Those who did not walk out continued to jeer and interrupt the performance throughout the evening. For this work, Miró revisited his early and important Barcelona series executed during World War II as a protest against the savagery of war. Mourlot 460-98; Cramer 107.

"The King is Bored," is a classic literary and vaudeville conceit in which a monarch grows weary of having everything and needs to be entertained. From a show business point of view this allows for a lavish production filled with eye-catching, titillating and exciting costumes and performers, and in this poster for a long-forgotten review at Paris' most famous music hall, Choubrac captures it all.

He received authorization in 1866 to open his own workshop, where his reputation for excellence and innovation attracted the top decorators of his day, among them Louis d'Eaubonne, Charles Ficquenet and Louis-Emile Diffloth. His close friend and associate Clement Massier opened the Paris boutique Dalvaux in 1800, where Milet's pottery was featured alongside Haviland-Limoges porcelain and Clichy and Choisy-le-Roi glass. Milet's pottery, distinguished by its innovative aesthetic style and vibrant colors, received a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition. He died in 1911, but his shop was continued by his son Jean Paul and later his grandson, Henri, until 1971. The scene depicted shows the Greek hero Odysseus carrying the ailing Philoctetes either to or from exile on the island of Lemnos. As told by the playwright Sophocles, the dying Heracles bequeathed his bow and arrows to the Thessalian archer Philoctetes. The latter suffered a poisonous snake bite at the onset of the Trojan War that became highly noxious. Unable to endure the stink of Philoctetes' wound, his comrades had Odysseus leave him on Lemnos. Ten years later a prophecy foretold that Philoctetes, using the weapons left him by Heracles, would be instrumental in defeating Troy. The war-weary Greeks sent Odysseus and Neoptolemus to the rescue, with Philoctetes being healed and ultimately slaying the Trojan prince Paris. 20.75 x 17.75 x 7.75 in.
