WILLIAM SELWOOD (ENGLISH, 1607-1653) LANTERN CLOCKA first period English brass lantern clock of theCharles I period to early Commonwealth period,by noted clockmaker William Selwood (British, 1607-1653). Inscribed across the front fret: "William Selwood at ye Maremaid in Louthbury." Roman numerals, floral engraved face. Offered with brass weight, cotton cord, and a later wooden wall bracket.
The clock measures 16" x 7 1/2" x 7"not including bracket or weight.

Condition
The clock is untested. Tarnish and patination consistent with age. There is an old repaired crack on the backside of the bell. The cotton cord is worn and should be replaced.

RARE 18TH CENTURY JAPANESE LANTERN CLOCK, OR DAI DOKEI, WITH LUNAR INDICATION Brass and iron with hardwood stand. Twelve hours written in two bands, one of red, the other of black enclosing the rotating red center with 'Sun' hand and aperture to reveal the phase of the moon, the weight driven iron movement with four-wheel trains, each wheel of three-crossings, the going terminating in a verge foliot escapement, the striking with countwheel acting on a vertical hammer with four-vane fly. With two lead weights and a pair of weighted tassle counter-weights.
