AN ELEGANT FRENCH SILVERED METAL MOUNTED BLACK LEATHER ...AN ELEGANT FRENCH SILVERED METAL MOUNTED BLACK LEATHER TRAVELING COLLECTOR'S CHEST, BY GUSTAVE KELLER, PARIS, LATE 19TH CENTURY, the rectangular hinged lid centering a circular purple guilloché enamel plaque enclosing a silvered metal bow ribbon suspending double rings interlocking an "ER" monogram, opening to reveal a fall front hinged door having engraved silver metal panel "GUSTAVE KELLER FABT 65 RUE TURBIGO PARIS," before a padded deep burgundy velvet lined shallow compartment above three long drawers with rectangular inset handles and similarly lined interiors, flanked by two exterior shaped rectangular silvered metal inset handles. NOTE: Founded by Gustave Keller in 1856 and first established at 65, Rue de Turbigo, Paris, he later (in 1891) moved the shop and workshop to 22 rue Joubert. The firm made elegant accessories and sets which were immediately appreciated for their fine quality. At the Paris World Exhibitions of 1867 and 1878, Keller was presented with silver and gold medals. After 1878, the Keller brothers succeeded him and continued producing high quality silverwares. The firm was later known as "Keller fils et gendre successeurs". In 1889, Lucien Falize wrote that "everything stamped Keller is good" and the firm was rewarded at the 1889 and 1900 Paris World Fairs by a Gold Medal and a Grand Prix respectively. Keller was appointed official supplier to several European courts including those of Spain, Russia, Greece and Romania. They were also commissioned to produce several important cups and trophies for the ruling Grimaldi family of the Principality of Monaco. The last Tsar, Nicholas II, himself purchased items from them on a regular basis. Examples of the firm's work can be found in collections including those of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, and the Musée d'Orsay, France as well as the Imperial State Hermitage in St Petersburg. The oval shaped body resting on four scroll feet, the sides applied with foliage and two cartouches supported by lions with coronet above, with two foliage handles, the domed and fluted cover with finial formed as vegetables including artichoke, peas and mushrooms and a lizard and crayfish, the stand with molded and foliage rim, fluted border and garlands, with liner, marked on stand, body, liner and cover, the body stamped Puiforcat à Paris. After Ferdinand Jean Joubert (French 1810-1884). A terracotta figure of a nude lady kneeling on rockwork with drapery on a circular plinth inscribed. 15ins Estimate ?200-300 The head has been broken off and glued back although not recently many small nibbles in the fold works of the decoration here and there throughout many surface scratches and figure is rather grubby / lightly stained. Firing crack at left wrist and residues of paint visible in the folds of the cloak at the back of the figure general wear around base and some discolouration in the hair otherwise fair. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. Books include "The Miser" by French playwright Molière, Choice Thoughts of Joseph Joubert and Napoleon, Pascal's Prayers and Meditations, Maxims and Reflections by François duc de la Rochefoucauld, Songs and Poems by Théodore Botrel ("Bard of the Armies"), and an 1897 spiritual diary with hand written notes. Also a late 18th century hand written letter glorifying the Virgin. Largest: 4 1/8" x 2 1/4". Good condition with light wear.
