Note: The family appears to be descended from William Roxburgh M.D. (1751-1815), known as the 'Father of Indian Botany'. While working as a surgeon for the East India Company, Roxburgh trained a team of Indian artists in botanical drawings and published the results in Plants of the Coast of Coromandel in folio volumes in 1795, 1802 and 1819. In 1793 he took charge of the Calcutta Botanical Garden. The William Roxburgh M.D. whose portrait appears among the images of this lot is presumed to be his grandson.

19th C. Nepalese Brass Bell w/ Dorje Handle: Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 19th century CE. A ritualistic bell made of cast-brass with an ornate handle that represents a dorje. The bell cavity still contains the original clapper held in place by a wire. The lip and shoulder are decorated with raised curvilinear motifs. At the base of the neck are three faces of bodhisattvas that support the handle. The ribbed finial is known as a dorje or vajra - literally meaning both diamond and lightning bolt. When a dorje is paired with a bell, this becomes a ritualistic object for Buddhist worship. The hollow dome of the bell represents the empty void, and the sound that the clapper makes represents "form, or appearance" - the opposite of emptiness. A beautiful bell that has a rich patina and a clapper that still emits a pleasant high-pitched tone. Size: 2. 75" W x 6" H (7 cm x 15. 2 cm) . . 1824 Russian Silver Icon Pendant, Mary Magdalene 67. 4 g: Eastern Europe, Russia, ca. 1824. A gorgeous silver icon pendant of ovoid form adorned with niello decoration featuring Mary Magdalene, as indicated by the Cyrillic banners to either side of her. Surrounded by a lovely vegetal border with six quatrefoils, Mary wears a dark veil over a light tunic, decorated with a band of dots at her neck and wrist. The epitome of beauty, her blessed visage glares out at her viewers from sizable, almond-shaped eyes, as her full lips lie closed under her petite nose and straight brow. In the elegantly long fingers of her right hand, she holds an egg; a symbol of the empty tomb of Jesus and his resurrection, as outside the egg appears dormant, but inside it holds new life. Though a patchwork pattern adorns the space around her, her head is crowned by a large halo, which is left blank, allowing the bare lustrous silver to create an ethereal glow, imbuing her with an air of incorporeality. Size: 2. 2" W x 3. 375" H (5. 6 cm x 8. 6 cm); quality of silver: 88. 65% for tondo, 83% for back, and 90. 6% for frame; total weight: 67. 4 grams. . The periphery of the frame is ornamented with a zig-zag motif. The back not only features a top loop for suspension, but is also inscribed Cyrillic writing, which translates to "Bless and Save" surrounded by an abstract design. Below the writing, one can find Russian silver hallmarks indicating when, where, and who made the piece. The tondo, frame, and backing can be separated, allowing one to store something inside this stunning pendant. . . Unlike Western Catholicism, in the Eastern Orthodox Church, Mary Magdalene is regarded as a virtuous woman her entire life, rather than only after she meets Jesus. The egg is also a frequent iconographical characteristic of Mary Magdalene within the Orthodox religion. Not only due its relation to the resurrection of Christ, at which Mary was present, but also because of many legends that have arose involving Mary and an egg. One tale claims that Mary was holding a basket of eggs when she went to visit Jesus’s empty tomb on Easter Sunday. Another, more popular story asserts that, after the death and resurrection of Jesus, Mary used her position to gain an invitation to a banquet hosted by the Roman Emperor Tiberius and when she met him, she held a plain egg in her hand and exclaimed, "Christ is risen!" The Emperor laughed and said that Christ rising from the dead was as likely as the egg in her hand turning red while she held it. Before he finished speaking, the egg in her hand turned a bright red and she continued proclaiming the Gospel to the entire imperial house. . . Icons (icon means "image" in Greek) are sacred objects within the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition. Found in homes as well as churches, these painted images depict holy persons and saints as well as illustrate scenes from the Scriptures. Some icons are encased in precious metal covers (oklads) adorned with pearls and semi-precious stones or glass-fronted wooden cases (kiots). Icons are not worshiped, but are instead venerated for their ability to focus the power of an individual's prayer to God. As such they are truly "windows into heaven. " . . An elegant cast-brass bell with a long and ornate handle with three openwork, ribbed shapes known as vajras or dorjes - literally meaning both diamond and lightening bolt. When a dorje is paired with a bell, this becomes a ritualistic object for Buddhist worship. The hollow dome of the bell represents the empty void, and the sound that the clapper makes is "form, or appearance" the opposite of emptiness. This beautiful bell still emits a high pitched ring, has a rich patina, and is adorned with incised lines and relief shapes that create abstract geometric and floral motifs. SAM FRANCIS, (AMERICAN, 1923-1994), PASADENA BOX: PLATE 7 (SF-71)(L-63), LITHOGRAPH, 1963, 14 3/4"H X 22 1/4"W (SHEET), 22 3/4"H X 30 1/4"W (FRAME).SamFrancis(American, 1923-1994)Pasadena Box: Plate 7 (SF-71)(L-63)lithograph, 1963pencil signed artist proof. Provenance: Property of the Estate of Craig W Johnson, purchased from the Jonathan Novak Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, CA. Biography from GallArt.com: Sam Francis, noted for his lyrical, colorful abstract works, was one of the first American artists to experiment with "empty-center" painting. Born in 1923 in San Mateo, California, Francis attended the University of California in Berkeley from 1941 to 1943, when he joined the Air Force. In 1945, hospitalized in San Francisco after an injury, he began painting under the influence of David Park. He had already developed an abstract style before returning to Berkeley for formal art studies in 1949 and 1950. In school, Francis developed the propensity for vivid blots of color and thinned pigments that is reflected in his mature work. In the 1950s, Francis traveled extensively, with Paris as his base. He has lived abroad so much that he is considered as much an international painter as an American one. In France, Francis produced some pale monochromatic works. His characteristic brilliant colors soon returned in overlapping and dripping profusion in the dense, unified style typical of his work up to the mid-1950s. His paintings in the 1956 "Twelve Americans" exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City gained him a worldwide reputation. Japanese influence is seen in Francis's unique early 1960s experimentation with empty-center painting. Vast canvases with unpainted central areas are defined, accented, or dominated by strokes and drips in bold colors around the extremities of the canvas. From the 1970s on, Francis returned to centered painting, in which color puddles out in a galaxy effect on monumental canvases. During the final three decades of his career his style of large scale bright Abstract expressionism was also closely associated with Color field painting. During the last year of his life, suffering from prostate cancer and unable to paint with his right hand after a fall, in a final burst of energy he used his left hand to complete a dazzling series of about 150 small paintings before he died. He was buried in Olema, in Marin County, California. 14 3/4"H x 22 1/4"W (sheet), 22 3/4"H x 30 1/4"W (frame).

Framed Mid-20th C. Painting of Twilight Dreamscape: **Originally Listed At $800**. . Signed T superimposed over R followed by "ripp" & dated 1961 on lower right. A dream-like, fantasy-inspired painting, clearly inspired by the great Salvador Dali who was a pioneer of what is known as Naturalistic Surrealism - a branch of Surrealism in which recognizable forms and scenes are transformed into a dreamscape or even a nightmare. The painting presents a haunting scene set at twilight with most of the inhabitants presented in the upper quarter of the composition: an eerie, empty boat at the right; a standing figure holding a spear in one hand and leaning against a tree trunk with the other in the middle distance to the left; and a kneeling figure before a massive iceberg beyond and to the right. Meanwhile, the remaining long expanse of blue waters is solely occupied by a few stone-like masses. This piece aspires to bring humankind's outer and inner "realities" together in the same way that seemingly disparate scenes are united in vivid dreams. Size: 35. 75" L x 15" W (90. 8 cm x 38. 1 cm); 37. 625" L x 16. 5" W (95. 6 cm x 41. 9 cm) including frame. . The empty space of this painting conjures Dali's haunting barren landscape in "The Persistence of Memory" (1931). In addition, every detail of this dreamscape is rendered with absolute precision and control in an effort to make the world of the painting as real as the natural world - to make the irrational somehow palpable and concretely real. Dali famously stated that his art aimed "to materialize the images of concrete irrationality with the most imperialistic fury of precision … in order that the world of imagination and of concrete irrationality may be as objectively evident … as that of the exterior world of phenomenal reality. " This painting clearly aspires to that same goal. . . Provenance: private Honolulu, Hawaii, USA collection. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. SAM FRANCIS, (AMERICAN, 1923-1994), STATE 1 (N9146) UNTITLED FROM JUBILEE EX PROOF (N9078), LITHOGRAPH, 25 1/4"H X 19"W (SHEET), 36"H X 29"W (FRAME).SamFrancis(American, 1923-1994)State 1 (N9146) Untitled from Jubilee EX Proof (N9078)lithographpencil signed lower right. Provenance: Property of the Estate of Craig W Johnson, purchased from the Alan Cristea Gallery, London.
