BERNARD 'POP' GREEN
On 23rd/24th March 1944, 76 Airmen escaped from POW camp Stalag Luft 3 at Sagan in Poland. Their escape through the tunnel 'Harry' and the story of the days that followed became known as 'The Great Escape' and has now become part of British folklore.
Bernard Green was born in Bourne End, Buckinghamshire on 23rd December 1887.
He was educated at Clifton College, London University and Cambridge University.
At the outbreak of war in 1914 Bernard joined the Royal East Kent Rifles as a private.
He was subsequently commissioned into the Buckinghamshire Battalion of the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire light Infantry as a Second Lieutenant in June 1914.
In 1917 he was mentioned in despatches, and in 1918 was awarded the Military Cross. He became a specialist machine-gunner, and when he resigned his commission in 1920 he was granted the rank of Major, although modestly it was a title that he very rarely used.
Between the war years he worked for the family paper making firm, and in 1926 became a Special Constable, eventually achieving a long service medal.
In 1939 at the outbreak of the Second World War Bernard Green applied for a commission as an officer air gunner with the RAF Volunteer Reserve. In December 1939 he took up active service as Pilot Officer 76904, at the RAF Number 3 Bomb Gunnery School.
It's not clear why, in July 1940, at the age of 53 Bernard took up a place as rear gunner on a Hampden bomber. The plane was flying out of R A F Waddington with 44th Squadron on a mine laying mission. It may have been due to shortage of men or his strong sense of duty and loyalty to his squadron
. In the early hours of 20th July the Hampden was hit by flak off the coast of Denmark and ditched into the sea in Tannis Bay, 300-400 metres off shore at Kandestederne. Two of the crew perished, but P/O Green and P/S Farrands survived and swam ashore. Later that morning Bernard Green came into contact with a party of local peat cutters and refused the opportunity of concealment from the enemy, as he knew what the consequences would be for his rescuers if found. A unit of German soldiers had been alerted and soon arrived to collect him.
Bernard Green was sent to Dulag Luft in Oberursel where he was interrogated and then sent on to Stalag Luft 1 at Barth. Subsequently he was moved to Stalag Luft 3 at Sagan, in Poland.
It seems that Bernard Green took a very active part in the daily operations of escape work at Stalag Luft 3. He was a popular character and would have been a father figure to the majority of the much younger men, hence his nickname 'Pop'.
He was certainly known to have acted as a 'penguin' in distributing the waste soil over the compound as tunnel 'Harry' took shape.
The events of the Great Escape have been well documented and are known to many through John Sturges' classic film. One fact that many are not aware of is that there was thick snow on the ground in that part of Poland in March 1944. Green and others did make their escape after overcoming the shortfall of the tunnel and gathered with a group of about twelve others all dressed as Czech workmen. They walked for some distance through the woods in thick snow and eventually made their way to a railway station south of Sagan. It was from there that they travelled about fifty miles and alighted from the train just short of Hirschberg.
Continuing on foot and approaching a village that was impassable because of heavy snow in the fields, Bernard Green was captured by a German soldier as walked straight through the village.
Flight Lieutenant Green as he was now known following promotion, was eventually taken back to Stalag Luft 3 and spent 14 days in the "cooler". Sadly, as is well known, many of the escapees were not so lucky. Bernard Green spent the rest of the war at Sagan. At 57 years old he was surely the oldest of the men who attempted such a brave escape.
In 1947 Flight Lt Green was mentioned in despatches as published in The London Gazette on 7th January.
In June 1963 Bernard and his wife attended the World charity film premiere of 'The Great Escape' at the Odeon Theatre, Leicester Square.
He died following ill health on 2nd November 1971.
The account of the personal military history to be available on view with the items, and facsimile copies of the documents only to handled on view, unless by special arrangement

Alfred Van Loen, New York / Germany, (1924-1994) untitled contour line nude studies, ink on paper signed and dated lower right. Bio from 1st Dibs: This set is in the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. It speaks to the horrors of slavery and the joys of freedom. it was created during the civil rights movement and while his personal history was of the horrors of World War II, I believe this might also reference the African American experience. Alfred Van Loen was a prolific artist whose career spanned a half century. He was born in 1924 in Oberhausen-Osterfeld, Germany and sent to Holland to be educated. He graduated from the Royal Academy of Amsterdam. He immigrated to the United States following World War II and taught art at Vassar, Hunter College and Columbia University. He taught at C.W. Post for over 20 years. His work is characterized by a spiritual connection to nature. Van Loen's reputation is built on his works as a direct carver a sculptor who carves into stone or marble without preliminary blueprints, models or drawings. Van Loen is a man in love with the materials. He is an artist who is part scientist, part architect, part explorer and part inventor. Van Loen further isolated himself from the cultural capital and "the sickness of the art world in New York City." Since then, Van Loen has become a bigger star in a smaller galaxy, with a devoted following of patrons and students. Whether casting medals, drawing in unbroken lines (similar to those of Pablo Picasso and Alexander Calder), painting in watercolors or carving stones and wood, Van Loen is the quintessential craftsman. The real Van Loen is in all of his work. He finds endless lines of continuity and form in the trees and birds and plants that surround him. His two lives. One begins in Germany, where he was born in 1924. The other picks up in 1947 when he arrived in New York. At age six, he says, his wealthy, Jewish parents Karl and Hedwig Lowenthal, owners of a sporting good store sent him to school at a Dominican cloister in Venlo, Holland. In 1938, forced to flee Nazi persecution in Germany, the family moved to Amsterdam, where Alfred joined them. A small carved crucifix which he produced caught the eye of a sponsor who enrolled him in the Royal Academy of Art in Amsterdam in 1941. Surrounded by the cruelty and destruction of war, the young artist became involved in the underground, spying and distributing anti-Nazi pamphlets. Betrayed by his best friend, he was arrested by the Nazi Gestapo and spent 16 months in Auschwitz. When he got out, he says, he had only 72 pounds distributed on his 6-foot, 2-inch frame. He did not expect to live after his recovery, he changed his family name, Lowenthal, to Van Loen and returned to the Royal Academy to finish the formal and classical training in anatomy, architectural drawing, pottery, carpentry and casting. By the time he graduated, the war was over, and he decided to come to the United States. When Van Loen talks about this part of his background, the details are sketchy, sometimes contradictory. He does not dwell on that period of his life, and he will not be pressed for specifics. "People should never forget the atrocities of that war," he says. "But they should not continue, living with the memories of it." There are happier memories of his life in the United States, which began April 4, 1947, when a rebuilt troop transport brought 800 emigrants, including the 22-year-old Van Loen, to New York. If there are any gaps in Van Loen's life as a U.S. citizen, they come in the early-1950s when he abandoned the Bohemian life of a young, promising New York artist and traveled to Mexico and briefly to Europe. In 1958, he married Helen Roberts (his second marriage ended in divorce and his first marriage, in pre-war Europe, is shrouded in mystery). Dickens, Charles - Smith, Arthur; Mackay, Charles - Scottish Readings Tour 1858 Autograph signature of Charles Dickens, dated Sixth October 1858, and also dated Perth October 6th 1858, on slip 12.5 x 3 cm.; Smith, Arthur, [Charles Dicken's Tour Manager], [Reading Ticket] Envelope inscribed "Dear Sir, Please send the enclosed to Aberdeen by Train, Faithfully, Arthur Smith, Sept 8th", envelope with blue printed motif on rear "Mr Charles Dickens's Readings"; Mackay, Arthur (1814-89; author and journalist who worked with Dickens on the Morning Chronicle and the Daily News) Clipped signature "Yours truly, Chas. Mackay", 4 x 9 cm., pasted onto a piece of paper Estimate £ 600-700 Note: Collection of interconnected items relating to Dickens Scottish Readings of 1858. Arthur Smith was Dickens's Tour Manager from 1858 to 1861; Charles Mackay, a lifelong friend of Dickens born in Perth, was a renowned Scottish poet and publisher in his own right and was the sub editor on the Morning Chronicle (the editor of which was George Hogarth, father of Catherine, later to become Dickens's wife) for which Dickens worked as a Parliamentary reporter. It is surely no coincidence that Perth figures on Dickens's first Scottish Tour and the Dickens signature in his own hand notes it, the date and year. There is also an unusual monogram of two interlocking initials, either C.D. or R.D. ? Smith's message on the back of the Dickens's Readings envelope is enigmatic. "Dear Sir.. Please send the enclosed to Aberdeen by train. Faithfully, Arthur Smith, Sept. 8th". What was in the envelope, tickets perhaps to Dickens's Reading at the Music Hall in Aberdeen ? Curiously there is no addressee on the envelope. Apart from the interconnection of the signatures, the 1858 Scottish tour is highly important in terms of Dickens's personal life. In the early Summer of 1858 on his return with Arthur Smith from a highly successful American tour, the misdirected jewellery incident ended formally Dickens's marriage and exposed his affair with Ellen Ternan, an 18 year old actress. For a while it threatened to destroy the "home and hearth" image of Dickens as a stalwart family man. At the time Dickens was terrified of the loss of his Public and the likely financial repercussions. Under instruction from Dickens Smith released a detailed letter - the "Violated" letter in which Dickens tried to defend his actions. It must have been with both trepidation and relief that Dickens soon after set off for Scotland to give a series of Public Readings in Edinburgh, Perth, Dundee, Aberdeen and Glasgow. Dickens relied on Arthur Smith for the organisation and promotion of his Reading Tours (1858-1861). Arthur Smith in his own right was the English equivalent of Barnum in America. He sold Dickens as a "Brand". Dickens recognised Smith's talent when the latter successfully promoted his brother Albert Smith - who was as famous in his heyday as Dickens - as a poet, novelist and mountaineer, promoting his brother's "Ascent of Mont Blanc" production and creating Mont Blanc mania in London. Financially the Scottish part of the Readings Tour was a great success. The net profit to Dickens of the English Tour had been upwards of three hundred pounds a week, but this was nothing to the success in Scotland, where his profit in a week, with all expenses paid, was five hundred pounds. Speaking of his last 1858 Edinburgh reading, Dickens wrote "the people had to be got in through such a crowd as rendered it a work of the utmost difficulty to keep an alley into the room. They were seated about me on the platform, put into the doorway of the waiting-room, squeezed into every conceivable place, and a multitude turned away once more. I think I am better pleased with what was done in Edinburgh than with what has been done anywhere, almost. " 2016 is the 150th anniversary of Dickens's second Scottish Reading Tour of 1866.. Sold for £813 (buyer's premium included)

ATTRIBUTED TO VLADIMIR LUKICH BOROVIKOVSKY (RUSSIAN 1757-1825)Diana, based on the same composition of the goddess by Borovikovsky`s teacher, Johann Baptist Lampi, oil on canvas47.5 x 38 cm. (18 5/8 x 15 in.)LITERATUREThe nearly identical version of the work by Johann Baptist Lampi is illustrated in "Un ritrattista nell`Europa dell corti" by Fernando Mazzocca, Roberto Pancheri and Alessandro Casagrande, Giovanni Battista Lampi 1751 – 1830, (Trento 2001), p. 232, n. 31Please see Lot Notes belowLOT NOTESVladimir Borovikovsky received his earliest art instruction from his father, a limner icon painter, before catching the eye of Empress Catherine II and being engaged by the Empress as a court painter and student under Johann Baptist Lampi. It appears that while Borovikovsky was still Lampi`s student that he painted the figure of Diana forming the present lot. Borovikovsky met the Empress while she was visiting the newly conquered Crimea and staying with Borovikovsky`s friend, Vasyl Kapnist, the Marshal of Nobility of the Kiev Gubernia. To please the Empress, Kapnist commissioned Borovikovsky to paint pair of allegorical works featuring the monarch for her chamber. The paintings had left a great impression on Catherine, and she requested that the artist move to St. Petersburg. Borovikovsky accepted the offer and after establishing himself in the capital in 1787, made the city his permanent residence. Although still a young man by modern standards, at thirty years old Borovikovsky was beyond the acceptable age range for formal academy training, and was set up to study privately under Johann Baptist Lampi in 1792, one of the most fashionable portrait painters of the day. Lampi had exerted an unquestionable influence over the development of Borovikovsky`s style, particularly noticeable in the young artist`s soft palette and compositional devices. It was common practice of the day for students to copy the works of their masters, and given the existence of a strikingly similar work to the present lot by Lampi (now in the Museo Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento, Italy) it appears likely that the work by Lampi served as a basis for this painting of Diana. The authors of the monograph Giovanni Battista Lampi 1751 - 1830 believe Lampi completed his painting of the goddess (pictured here in the ``additional images``) somewhere between 1789 and 1791, shortly before he took on Borovikovsky as a pupil, making this work a prime candidate for study and copying by the aspiring artist. Although the pose and subject of the two paintings is nearly identical, one cannot help but notice where Borovikovsky deviated from his master`s approach and imbued the subject with his own vision. Stronger, cleaner lines replace his master`s sfumato and cooler mother-of-pearl shade pastels replace the warmer hues. The beauty of the face and figure remain paramount, however, with the folds of the robes, the position of the hands, and other scenic devices primarily used to enhance the allure of the subject, as would become a hallmark of Borovikovsky`s oeuvre. Although unsigned, given the work`s close connection to the painting of Diana by Johann Baptist Lampi, created shortly before Borovikovsky was taken on as a student, and given the slight but notable variations between the two works clearly done by different masters, it is quite likely that the present lot is an early work by Vladimir Borovikovsky, while the artists was still on the cusp of greatness.

Vol.II is also found with two folding maps but these are not strictly necessary - they were originally published separately. The text is in Danish and the Kalatdlisut dialect of the Greenland Eskimo language. The woodcuts, which are the chief joy of this work, are by Aron “Greenland's most remarkable artist. He was a full-blooded Eskimo and belonged to thee Herrnhunter mission at the small trading station of Kangeq. He had no artistic training whatsoever being a sealer and walrus hunter through and through. While still a young man he became bedridden, struck down with … tuberculosis … Rink discovered his talent, sent him paper, coloured pencils and the necessary tools for woodcutting, and with no instruction whatsoever Aron produced over two hundred woodcuts and watercolours. They are now internationally acknowledged and admired by connoisseurs and art crtics” (Oldenow pp.26-27). RALPH ROSENBORG, (NEW YORK, 1913-1992), UNTITLED ABSTRACT, 1940, OIL ON CANVAS, 31"H X 23"W (SIGHT), 33 1/2"H X 25 1/4"W (FRAME).Ralph Rosenborg (New York, 1913-1992) untitled abstract, 1940 oil on canvas signed and dated '40 lower right. Livingston Galleries NY label verso. The following biography was written by Virginia M. Mecklenburg for the Patricia and Phillip Frost Collection: "American Abstraction, 1930-1945" (Washington, DC: National Museum of American Art and Smithsonian Institution Press, 1989), pp. 151-153. It was submitted by Peter Karol. ALTHOUGH RALPH ROSENBORG HAS PAINTED ABSTRACT WORK THROUGHOUT his life, nature has served as his perennial motif. He won a scholarship while still in high school to Saturday art classes at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. After classes ended, he continued to study privately with his teacher there, Henriette Reiss, who provided not only exacting technical training, but broad-based instruction in music, literature, and art history. More significantly, Reiss had worked with Kandinsky earlier in her career and introduced her young protégé to the vast arena of vanguard European ideas. After four years, Rosenborg was ready to exhibit. He showed frequently during the 1930s---initially in group exhibitions at ACA Galleries and later in Mayor La Guardia's 1934 "Mile of Art" at Radio City. His first solo exhibition, at the Eighth Street Theater in 1935, was followed by shows at various galleries almost annually throughout the 1940s. A highly personal artist, inclined toward interpreting nature rather than the geometric form pursued by many of his fellow members of the American Abstract Artists, Rosenborg wrote in 1955: "Painting will always remain a super-real world to me, devoid of all modern forms of blasphemy. It is a world in which the immensity of creation moves me to a personal form of prayer and contemplation. It is also a world in which its laws demand a personal integrity of purpose, a simple humbleness, and a sufficient set of experiences as the basic requirement for admission to it. During the 1930s and 1940s, Rosenborg moved freely between expressionist watercolors evocative of the rhythms and colors of nature (such as the Untitled watercolor of about 1938) and more consciously structured oils, such as The Far-away City in which deep-toned, dream world landscapes take on the color and architecture of expressive stained glass. He paid little heed to modernist theories of surface and structure that fascinated many of his contemporaries. Later during the 1950s, Rosenborg's paintings increasingly reflected the energies, as well as the appearances, of the natural world. Tumultuous seascapes, serene landscapes, and brightly colored floral still lifes, were all executed with an attention to richly textured, heavily painted surfaces. Although New York City has remained home for Rosenborg throughout his career, he has traveled widely. In 1966, an award from the National Council on the Arts and Humanities enabled him to tour Europe. He continually strives upward in his work, and frequently draws an arrow in a rectangular box on the back of his paintings. Originally a Mayan motif, the arrow, for Rosenborg, "signifies that I will strive to always go up, aesthetically, spiritually, and from all practical points of view. It's very important because I try to stay on earth, but actually, the painting is another world." 31"H x 23"W (sight), 33 1/2"H x 25 1/4"W (frame). oil on canvas Dimensions: 31"H x 23"W (sight), 33 1/2"H x 25 1/4"W (frame).
