An American Gothic Mahogany Bookcase, early 19th c., Baltimore or Philadelphia, the architectonic upper doors fronted by paneled scalloped arches; outset lower case with white marble top over glazed doors flanked by pilasters, on block feet, height 89 in., width 65 in., depth 25 in. Note: Cornice restored. $2500/3500 Note: The use of flat-silhouette gothic arches and paneled elements on this bookcase recall those on a Philadelphia cherrywood settee found in the New Orleans Masonic Temple and sold by Neal Auction Company as lot 453, December 1999, and on a pair of armchairs made for Andalusia, Nicholas Biddle's villa north of Philadelphia. A walnut bookcase, made in Philadelphia, with similar arches, cross-members on the doors and a rectilinear base similar to those seen here was sold as lot 200, May 1993. Reference: Howe and Warren.
