Letterpress printed Spanish and English. Folio, original portfolio. Tampa: Limestone Press, 1989
number 34 of only 50 copies signed by gerzso and paz, from a total edition of 62. "Octavio Paz, with a great poet's concision, characterized Gerzso's work with the epithet: `The icy spark.' For more than three decades Gerzso has held the attention of those who recognize the singular consistency of his paradoxical approach. The smoldering colors, so brilliantly heightened, inexplicably give off a glacial emanation. In his ever unfolding vistas, in which there are inescapable hints of the majesty of the Mexican landscape, there is a light distilled, or rather, invented by the artist to lure the imagination beyond or behind the scenes into uncharted spaces"--Dore Ashton, Comentarios sobre la exposición: Plural en Austin, Plural, Mexico, D.F., December 1975, p. 81.

A pair of Eagles are shown in Exhibition and Sales Room of Steuben Glass, Inc., N.Y., N.Y. Pictured at p. 43 of American Architect, Number 2622 for March 1934.
In the Steuben line in 1934. Dimitroff p.75. Pheasant was popular and examples are numerous. A for a designer who was said to have disliked cut glass, Carder certainly produced a lot of it. His cut designs of the post-1918 period, in contrast to the 1903-15 group, are bold and unconventional. They are nothing like the designs created by his American competitors. P. 163 Dimitroff. In faceted pieces Carder used cutting to shape the outline of the glass.
See Fig. 2.40, p. 24 of Dimitroff where it is stated: A relatively few brilliant cut items were designed by Carder at Steuben. Further, at p. 256 the author states: ACarder=s deep, brilliant cut pieces are just plain rare in any shape or in any color.
In Frederick Carder: Portrait of a Glassmaker by Paul V. Gardner at p.28 the author states: His skilled cutters produced about 200 decorative patterns on elaborate console sets, stately covered jars, monumental centerpieces, and a few table services. Among the rarest cut pieces are an ornamental peacock, pheasant, eagle, and Pegasus, a fanciful concept of the fabled winged horse.
Steuben made many articles in pressed glass--ashtrays; Lincoln and Washington Head plaques with metal bases; eagle, pheasant, gazelle, duck, and pigeon figurines (later cut and polished to remove the mold marks) p. 178, American Art Nouveau Glass by Albert Christian Revi.
Seen at p. 41 of article Carder Steuben Glass by Robert Mueller, in Glass Collectors Digest, Volume XIV, Number 6, April/May 2001. At p. 43, Some of Carders most impressive cut and engraved work appears on figural animals, such as the pheasant, eagle, and pigeon. These table display sculptures were mold pressed, then hand cut to add details to the design.
In Steuben Seventy Years of American glassmaking by Perrot, Gardner and Plautt, the authors say p. 55: In addition to the pigeon, cut crystal eagle, pheasant, duck and peacock table ornaments were made. These objects were among the few Carder Steuben pieces in which the basic shape was formed in a mold and the feathers and other details added by the glass cutters after the piece was annealed.
In The Complete Cut and Engraved Glass of Corning by Estelle F. Sinclaire and Jane Shadel Spillman, the authors state at p. 198: Such art objects as the Carder-Steuben birds illustrate another characteristic Carder use of cutting: as texture or background. In the Steuben eagle, cutting reminiscent of the hollow or St. Louis diamonds suggests the texture of feathers.

Ltd., (1994), $9,945.a rare copy of these two important works often found bound together. only one copy has appeared at auction in the last 30 years. The Oviedo, a rare second edition, is an invaluable history of the New World, an essential Americanum despite its intrinsic pro-Spanish bias. Oviedo, courtier and eventually official historiographer to the Spanish court, is considered the "dean of the Spanish historians of the discovery and conquest of the Indies" (J. B. de Avalle-Arce, "Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés: Chronicler of the Indies," in P. Galloway, ed. The Hernando de Soto Expedition, 2005, p. 369). One of the first books to describe the pineapple (and containing the first illustration of that fruit), hammocks, and tobacco, and other New World flora and fauna, Oviedo's history relates the voyages of Columbus, the later history of Santo Domingo, the exploration of the Yucatan, and contains important descriptions of the natural history of the Americas. The somewhat schematic woodcuts include a scene of natives panning for gold, various American plants including several cacti and other exotic fruits, and a crocodile. Oviedo spent 34 tyears in Central America and the Caribbean from 1514, and from 1523 he was historiographer of the Indies which gave him special access to documents in Spain for research. He also witnessed the departure of Mendoza's expedition from Seville in 1534.Xeréz's history of the conquest of Peru, first published in 1534, is sometimes found on its own. It was written at the request of Pizarro by a contemporary witness. Xerez was secretary to Pizarro.European Americana 547/15 and 543/17; BM/STC Spanish p. 35; Sabin 57989 & 105723; Medina BHA 131-130; Arents collection I:209, 4a.

This rifle dates to the early portion of the 20th century, pre World War One. The carbine uses a 22" round barrel, a walnut stock, a blue'd finish, a down-turned pull, with a flag safety, and an adjustable ramp sight. The carbine is marked in numerous places, first with the receiver, showing the Coat of Arms of Argentina on the front of the receiver, with "Ejercito Argentino" underneath. The receiver is also stamped on the left side with "F. M. A. P. Mauser Mod 1909 - Direccion General De Fabricaciones Militares". Stalag Luft III - P.O.W. Diary - Macdonald, William
Wartime log belonging to Pte. William Macdonald from his time in the German prisoner of war camp Stalag Luft III, dated 1944 - 1945, containing several pages of verses, 15 pages of names and home addresses of other prisoners, 25 tipped in photographs, including one of the Stalag VIIIB school tutors, 5 of life in the camp including the cobblers, 28 drawings in pencil and watercolour by various other P.O.W.'s, including F. Perkins, Jas. T. R. Taylor, G.R. "Chips" Carpenter, Flight Lt. A. Cassie, R. Trunole, A.P. Culverwell, Lt. D.A. Woods U.S.A.A.F, Lindsay Grafton Greenaway R.A.A.F, Flight Lt. P.Hood, A. G. Turton, drawings a mixture of comical scenes of camp life, a view of the camp theatre, a double page watercolour showing the famous "Harry " tunnel from Hut 104, a pencil sketch of the D-Day landings, a single sketch of Milag Nord [Merchant Navy camp] and saucy postcard scenes, original cloth, tape repairs to backstrip, a few leaves loose
Note: Stalag Luft III [Permanent Camp for Airman #3] was a German camp for airforce servicemen based in near Zagen in Poland. The camp opened in 1942, with the North compound for British servicemen opened in June 1943.
The position of the camp was selected in an attempt to prevent escape by tunnelling. However, this camp was the location of two of the war's most famous escape attempts, potrayed in film in The Wooden Horse and The Great Escape. It is thought that over 600 prisoners worked on the three tunnels - Tom, Dick & Harry - depicted in The Great Escape. Harry was the only tunnel to be completed, the entrance hidden under a stove in Hut 104. Lindsay Greenaway drew a sketch of the tunnel in MacDonald's log along with the verse "Silently below the surface/ twenty five feet below the floor/ thus the Goons have cause to curse us/ and remember - One-o-Four/ 24-3-43".
Another sketch of MacDonald cobbling in his tartan troos was drawn by Alex Cassie in October 1944. A well known member of the escape team, Cassie worked on the endless list of forged documents required by the escapees. He was portrayed in the film by Donald Pleasance.

Cody writes this letter to Joseph T. McCaddon, longtime manager of the Barnum and Bailey Circus who was engaged in negotiations with Cody for the purchase of the Wild West Show. Charlie Thompson is back from Texas. Major Lillie is writing and sending you money to day. Thompson says he got the bonds released so now we can get the money that we put up to secure them. As soon as you can please send me my share, as I have been kept busy this season paying off the old Bailey Estate account."
