- US CONSTITUTION, NEW HAVEN GAZETTE,
US CONSTITUTION, NEW HAVEN GAZETTE, 1788 The New Haven Gazette, dated February 14, 1788, publishes its first account of Massachusetts ratifying the Constitution. Also discussed is the celebration and who is going to attend. Also includes the first mention of the ship the "Federal Constitution on runners being pulled by 13 horses." Also covering the front page is a list of all states in convention, the inhabitants, black and white, so as to determine representation in congress, and a list of the 6 ratifying states and their vote count thus needing three more to secure complete ratification. Along with other ratifying news such as a false report of North Carolina ratifying the constitution and an account of Georgia actually doing the same on January 6th, 1788, one month earlier than this publication. Plus other news including China's wealth, but the poverty of its working class is the same as it was over 200 years ago; also the election of General James Jackson as governor of Georgia.
- A LARGE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH PAPIER MACHE
A LARGE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH PAPIER MACHE SKITTLES GAMEThe large, container with lift-off cover in the form of a circa 1900 French judge's hat holds the figural, painted papier mache' skittle pins and three kid leather game balls with hand stitched seams. The skittle figures relate to French society through depictions of a worker, police commanders, male and female judges in robes, an avocat or lawyer, and three figures perhaps related to clergy given their collar but with what appears to be ermine on their robes. The French parlor game of 'jeu de quilles', which literally translates to 'skittles', was very popular in late 19th century France, and elsewhere, especially European countries. Examples like this 1890s set with nine pins and three rare, original hand laced kid leather balls such as these are very scarce.Measures 16.5 x 17.5 x 17.5 inches. Each measures approximately 12 inches tall.Good condition, noting wear to the thin, fragile coat of finish, and the general effects of age and use as shown.

- AN EARLY 19C. FOLK ART CERVICAL EFFIGY
AN EARLY 19C. FOLK ART CERVICAL EFFIGY OF JOHN WESLEYSmall 18th and early 19th century sculptures like this are typically identified as being a likeness of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism and a strict temperance advocate. The strange part is the medium: a painted oxen or horse vertebra, probably cervical. Painting portions of large animal skeletal structure was, apparently, at one point, not uncommon. How it was determined to be ideal for depicting a priest with his arms up and flowing robes behind is not known.Figure measures 5 x 3.75 x 3.25 and the globe on stand is 8.5 x 5.5 inches.Very good condition as shown. The glass dome display is included.
