LARGE USS CONNECTICUT ARCHIVE, GREAT WHITE FLEETUSS Connecticut Spanish American War / Great White Fleet commemorative items relating to John Addison Baxter Smith (1843-1918), U.S. Navy Rear Admiral and his son, John Baxter Smith, U.S. Navy Paymaster. Addison Baxter Smithís early career included serving blockade duty on the USS Housatonic during the blockade of Charleston in the Civil War. He survived after the ship destroyed by a Confederate torpedo. In his later years, he served as the head of steam engineering at the New York Naval Yard and was charged with building the machinery for the battleship ìConnecticutî. 1st grouping ñ 4 brass and metal souvenir cannons stamped, ìUSS Connecticut Sept. 29, 1904_ on each cannon. 2 1/4_ W x 3_ H. 2nd grouping ñ 2 sterling souvenir spoons, 1 of Navy Sailor holding rifle and marked ìNavyî, 5 3/8_ L, other of sailing vessel marked Olympia and profile of Commodore Dewey, 4 3/4_ L (1.13 total oz troy). 3rd item ñ Large Commemorative sterling charger, engraved en verso ìFrom the Ward Room Officers USS Connecticut December 7th 1914_, retailed by Bailey, Banks & Biddle, monogrammed ìSî, 12 1/8_ diameter (21.24 oz troy). 4th item ñ Gorham silver-plated dinner fork and knife, monogrammed ìUSNî en verso and with eagle emblem on front, 7 7/8_ L and 9 1/2_L. 5th item ñ Sterling silver cigarette case with the monogram of John Baxter Smith (U.S. Navy Paymaster) and a list of Naval ships including the USS Vermont, Princeton, and Connecticut (3.2 oz troy). 6th item ñ Large Gelatin toned silver print titled lower left ìThe U.S.S. Connecticut Copyright 1907 by Enrique Mullerî (reference: Enriques Robert Muller, Battleships of the United States Navy, New York, 1912). Note with the print, ìUSS Connecticut ñ Flagship of Atlantic Fleet 1914 ñ last ship that John A. B. Smith served on ñì. 17 1/2_W x 15_H sight, 23 1/2_W x 21 1/2_H framed. 7th grouping ñ three Great White fleet medals including 2 medals depicting the flags of the US and Japan and the date 1908, one having the flags enameled only, the second medal having the leaves surround and ribbon enameled in addition to the flags. Japanese hallmark on anchor base verso. The third medal with a propeller hasp and the medal depicting Admirals Sperry and Togo on the face and the lines, ìOn arrival of U.S. Fleet Yokohama Oct. 1908 and the profile of an American warship. An attached note, ìMedal given your Grandfather John Addison Baxter Smith when the ìGreat White Fleetî went around the world 1908_. All items late 19th/early 20th century. Total weight of all sterling silver: 25.57 oz troy.
Condition:
1st grouping - excellent. 2nd grouping - bowl of Navy spoon has minor bend. 3rd item - surface scratches and fleabites. 4th item - pitting and oxidation to knife blade. 5th item - some denting to case. 6th item - some toning to photographic print, a couple of stains to matting near print edge. 7th item - overall very good condition with expected wear, minor wear to enamel.

11 BLOWN GLASS FLASKS & BOTTLESEleven (11) American blown glass flasks and bottle, including Louisville (Kentucky) Glass Works and Jenny Lind. 1st-5th items: Five (5) Louisville (Kentucky) Glass Works aquamarine glass flasks, including one (1) GII-24 "Double Eagle" pictorial pint flask with embossed eagle emblem to both sides, ribbed edges, plain lip, and rough pontil; one (1) GII-36 "Eagle" pictorial pint flask with embossed eagle emblem and "Louisville Glass Works" within lower panel to obverse, ribbed body, rounded lip, and smooth pontil; and three (3) graduated GIX-6 "Scroll (Violin)" flasks with scrolling ribbed bodies, six-pointed stars, plain lips, and rough pontils, unmarked. Ranging in size from 7" H x 4" W x 1 5/8" D to 8 3/4" H x 5 1/2" W x 2 5/8" D. Second half of 19th century. 6th item: Filserville Glass Works aquamarine glass Jenny Lind flask with portrait surmounted by JENNY LIND, obverse, image of factory surmounted by FILSERVILLE GLASS WORKS, reverse, ribbed sides, band lip, and rough pontil. 10" H x 5 3/8" W x 4" D. Circa 1850-1863. 7th-11th items: Five (5) blown glass vessels, including one (1) clear glass pumpkinseed flask having clock dial with Roman numerals and GOOD NIGHT, obverse, five-pointed star, reverse, CLF to underside, and rounded lip; one (1) aquamarine glass scroll flask with eight-pointed star to both sides, plain lip, and smooth pontil; one (1) aquamarine glass hexagonal bottle with double rounded lip and smooth pontil; one (1) clear glass pumpkinseed flask with hobnail and ribbed body and rounded lip; and one (1) aquamarine glass cello-shaped flask with flared lip and smooth pontil. Ranging in size from 3 5/8" H x 1 7/8" W x 1" D to 8 3/4" H x 4 7/8" W x 1 3//4" D. 19th century.

Condition:
All items with minor scattered surface scratches, minute flaws in the making, and scattered fleabites to rims. Some with surface residue. Two scroll flasks with chips to rim, largest measuring 3/8" x 3/8".

THREE PIECES OF PISGAH FOREST MASONIC POTTERY(Arden, North Carolina, 1921-1962) light blue glazed vase, white glazed interior, applied cameo masonic double head eagle at neck, another masons symbol on opposite side of neck, "To My Good Friend and Brother Dr. S.S. Fay 33" and "Stephen-1959" in applied script to lower body of vase, "Long Pine" mark and five slash's on base, 7 in.; cobalt blue glazed bowl, pink glazed interior, applied "Asheville Scottish Rite" triangular double headed eagle emblem, "32" in blue at pinnacle, "potter at wheel" mark on base dated "1949", 2-1/4 x 4-3/4 in.; light blue glazed presentation pen holder, pink glazed interior, applied cameo plaque for "C.C. Rickey, G.H.P., 1947-48" and "Keystone", indiscernible "Stephen" mark on base, 3 in.

EARLY 20TH C. POLISH FRAGET N PLAQUE SILVER PLATED BOXEastern Europe, Poland, ca. 1915 to 1939 CE. An elegant 87% silver-plated brass box for storing sugar, with a hinged lid and repousse motifs. The underside is stamped with the Fraget mark "FRAGET N PLAQUE" inside the oval. The letter "N" in the centre means "silver deposition onto a brass surface" - a sophisticated plating technique that Fraget was famous for. Above the oval is the coat of arms of the coppersmiths' and bronze-smiths' corporation (two crossed hammers with a compass ). Before Poland's independence from Russia in 1915, the Russian Eagle Emblem was stamped above the oval- the absence indicates post 1915 production.
