Colt U. S. Army Model 1917 . 45 ACP Revolver c. 1920: For your consideration is a Colt Model 1917 U. S. Army issue . 45 ACP caliber World War I revolver. When the United States entered World War I, the government arsenals were not prepared to issue the standard Colt Model 1911 . 45 caliber automatic pistol in the numbers required. The most expedient fix was to have Colt alter their large frame double action revolvers to take the rimless . 45 ACP government cartridge used in the auto pistol. Because this round lacked a rim for the star extractor of the revolver to grab for extraction of fired cases, the “half-moon” three round clip was devised. This spring steel clip held three rimless cartridges in the extraction groove and allowed them to be quickly loaded into the cylinder. When the cartridges were fired the extractor easily pushed the shells from the cylinder for reloading. The Colt 1917 saw hard use in the trenches of The Great War, and many were refurbished by the arsenals for duty through the Second World War. This fine and early example displays a nice patina to the original Colt “brushed blue” military finish. Many of these models were also sold as surplus in later years, where once more they were refinished. Under the barrel is the desirable stamping “UNITED STATES PROPERTY. ” On the barrel top are the correct Colt address and patent markings. The left side of the barrel is stamped “COLT D. A. 45”, with the D. A. meaning double action—in which by simply pulling the trigger the hammer is cocked, released and the cartridge is fired. The revolver can also be fired by pulling the hammer back to full cock for finer aiming. The butt of this fine example retains the original lanyard swivel, these are frequently found removed, and the correct marking, “U. S. ARMY MODEL 1917 No. 150854. ” Often, when one of these revolvers left the service and was sold commercially, these United States markings were ground off. The crane holding the cylinder and the frame have matching serial numbers. The frame also retains the correct government inspector stamps. The smooth walnut grips are in excellent condition overall, and the front sight has not been altered. Mechanically tight and with bright bore, this Colt 1917 would be hard to improve upon. This Colt is a truly outstanding piece of World War I history that was manufactured in 1920. Serial Number: 301840. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

Godwin, North Carolina
A North Carolinian, universally known as "Carbine", was born in 1900, Marsh Williams. Declining higher education and in 1921, he chose to operate a whiskey still around the Godwin area in the lowlands near Fayetteville, NC. Deputy Sheriff Al Pate led a raid on Williams' still and was slain during the gun battle that raged at the still. Williams was tried and the jury was hung. He was tried a second time and was sentenced to 30 years of hard labor and to wear a felon's stripes. The State took his citizenship so he could be hunted "Dead or Alive".
Marsh was not a model prisoner. His conduct called for punishment and he was ordered by Captain H. T. Peoples to remain in solitary confined in a metal box in the middle of a field in the boiling sun until he apologized to the warden. He refused and remained there for longer than any man had ever survived. He was on bread and water, lost over 80 pounds and he was finally ordered to be released by the chaplain.
While in this box, to retain his sanity, he mentally assembled, disassembled and mentally fired guns that he had owned. In his mind he saw, in color, the explosion of the cartridges and the gases created. He devised an idea in his mind to use this wasted energy to operate the mechanism of pistols and rifles using a smaller and cheaper cartridge. This invention saved the U.S. Government $50,000 in its first year of use and completely revolutionized automatic weapons. He converted the .30 cal machine gun to a .22 cal and the Colt .45 cal automatic to .22 cal.
Once he recovered and while still a prisoner, he worked in the machine shop of the prison. He collected old ball bearings, truck springs, a Fordson tractor axle and a wooden fence post. He also made most of his tools and built a rifle that looked like a guard's rifle (which he was allowed to clean) but included his now world famous "floating chamber". He was caught making this gun but the very warden that put him in solitary realized Marsh had found his place in life. He was not trying to use it to escape, but that he was a genius. The warden convinced the prison board to let Marsh complete his project and test it. He subsequently built three rifles in prison.
He was, after "ten Christmases", granted a full pardon by the Governor and went on to invent, make, and patent some 59 weapons for Colt, Winchester and Remington. While he was most famous for the .30 cal M-1 Army carbine he made a remarkable machine gun that fired a sustained rate of fire of 2,000 rounds a minute.
A movie was made about his life. Jimmy Stewart played "Carbine" Williams and Wendell Cory played warden Capt. H. T. Peoples.
He is recognized as not only one of the world's greatest weapons inventors, but also was one of the few great inventors that physically made the guns he had invented. He was proud to be known as a "gun maker".

ALTERED CUSTER RANGE COLT SINGLE ACTION REVOLVER. Cal. 45 Colt. SN 4563. Early Aimsworth inspected single action with 5-1/2" bbl and repositioned front sight that has been soldered 3/4" from the muzzle. The frame has the "U.S." acceptance stamp and 2-line patent markings. The serial numbers are mixed with the bbl having number "1123", the cylinder "4609" and the trigger guard "31838". The back strap number has been obliterated from file marks. The frame serial number falls between two cavalry revolvers that are known, #4557 and #4564 which were all part of Lot 5 Government Contract from which the 7th Cavalry received their initial issue on July 2, 1874. John Kopec, noted author and historian in the matter of martially marked single action Colts, states in a letter dated December 9, 2002, that it is a good possibility that this revolver was one which was issued to Custer's 7th Cavalry regiment. He further notes that three revolvers from the 4500 serial number range have Custer Battlefield documentation. #4507 was listed as Gen. Terry's personal revolver, #4553 was a back strap located near the Indian village fight and #4597 belonged to Lt. Luther Hare of the 7th Cavalry ca. 1874. This revolver likely remained in service until the recall of 1893 when it was probably altered to artillery configuration. The bbl currently on this revolver was not altered at that time as the sight is completely wrong and brazed in place and the bbl root has been peened to make it fit more snug. The grips appear to be original old grips, but do not fit very well as there are paper shims in the frame. One frame screw has been changed or possibly only dressed down. Accompanied by the previously mentioned Kopec letter. CONDITION: Good, as previously noted, no original finish remains with the bbl and grip frame being a light gray patina and the frame a dark patina. The grips show much wear with some battering on the bottom. The cylinder also shows much wear with traces of blue in the flutes. The ejector rod head is the later crescent shaped type. The hammer will not hold on safety or half cock, otherwise mechanics are okay. Strong bright bore with scattered light pitting. Additional research may eventually disclose a better connection to the 7th Cavalry. 4-53191 JR808 (4,500-7,500)

Colt Bisley S/A . 45 Stembridge Hollywood Revolver: This lot offers you a Colt Bisley Single Action . 45 Colt caliber, 4 _ó barrel revolver with floral carved holster once owned by Stembridge Gun Rentals of Hollywood, California! This fine all matching serial numbered Bisley was made in 1902 and is identified by Stembridgeó»s Só owneró»s marking stamped next to the frame serial number 245877. Stembridge was founded in 1920 by James Stembridge and Cecil B. DeMille to supply guns to the movie industry. The company went out of business in the 1990s. At this time their extensive collection of firearms was liquidated. Most of these famed Hollywood movie guns have found homes in museums and private collections, making examples extremely hard to acquire. One can only wonder the great western movies in which this Bisley played a part and what Hollywood stars might have handled it during filming! Being an unusual and early Colt, it is likely that this was one of the original 1920 Stembridge acquisitions. During this early time in film, westerns were one of the most popular and profitable motion picture genres. The Colt Bisley Model was named for the famed Bisley Shooting Range in England and was an attempt by Colt to offer the Single Action Army revolver shooter an informal target single action option. With its lower hammer, curved trigger and sloping grip frame, the Bisley model found favor with those who preferred a different style and feel in their Colt Single Action revolver. The Bisley Model seemed to be especially popular in the Southwestern U. S. Considerably more scarce on the collector market today, the total number of Single Action Army revolvers manufactured by Colt reached over 357, 000 before the start of World War II. Of this number only 44, 350 were in the Bisley configuration. The most popular calibers in the Bisley were the . 32-20 and . 38-40. Only a total of 8, 005 Bisleys in all three standard barrel lengths combined (4 _ó, 5 _ó & 7 _ó) were made in the most desirable caliber of . 45 Colt. This Colt Bisley has all matching serial numbers on the frame, trigger guard and back strap. It also retains excellent original Colt markings including the two-line barrel address used only on 4 _ó revolvers (all longer lengths had a one line address). The left side of the barrel is also correctly marked (BISLEY MODEL) . 45 COLTó and the left side of the frame retains the two lines of patent dates plus the rampant colt logo. Most of the metal surfaces are now a gray patina from years of handling and holster wear. There is some fine blue retained in the most protected areas around the ejector housing. There is also considerable edge wear to the left side of the muzzle showing that this revolver was drawn and holstered as well as carried a great deal! One can only wonder at the number of hard-riding western films this Colt must have been in to cause this kind of honest holster wear! Front sight has not been altered and the correct, original Colt hard rubber grips show wear but are sound. All screws are excellent and the action works correctly. The bore is also excellent. The beautifully floral carved black holster is embossed on the reverse side COLORADO SADDLERYó over DENVERó and fits any 4 _ó barrel Single Action or Bisley revolver perfectly. Apparently this holster came from Stembridge Gun Rentals with this Bisley. The holster is in excellent overall condition. Not only a fine Colt collectable, but unquestionably a wonderful piece of Hollywood western movie memorabilia! The revolver qualifies as a Curio & Relic Handgun, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.
