Mel Crawford (B. 1925) "Gingerbread House": Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Gingerbread House" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the United States 15c Santa Claus stamp issued October 18, 1979. . . As Christmas nears, happy excited children turn their attention to frosty snowmen, gingerbread houses and tasty lollipops. Mothers and fathers frantically hurry through last minute preparations, while frolicsome kittens pull popcorn strings and baubles from the tree. In this delightful season, it seems that candles wink in every window. And families vie to create even more beautiful decorations than those of years past with blinking lights and colorful tinsel. Yet, one of the most important activities involves only the kitchen, for it is, indeed, the center of the season's excitement. Here, the women prepare festive meals for that special day. Puddings steam in pots, while turkeys, hams and roasts are baking. Old favorites, fudge and divinity, bubble atop the stove and elaborate stuffings are lovingly prepared. Many gaily decorated cookies in shapes of snowmen, Santas and stars grace the tables in family rooms, while others hang as decorations, awaiting Christmas day. And, the longtime favorite of children everywhere, the gingerbread man, captures the hearts of all, with his chocolate candy eyes and nose, and smiling face. . . Image Size: 20. 75 x 18. 75 in. . Mel Crawford (B. 1925) "Canada Christmas 1981" WC: Mel Crawford (Canadian, B. 1925) "Canada Christmas 1981" Signed lower left. Original watercolor painting on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting is the original painting which was published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the Canada 15c Merry Christmas Joyeux Noel stamp issue of November 16, 1981. . . Christmas inspires the most extravagant decorations. In Canada, the merry season is proclaimed by holly and pine decked houses, with mistletoe and poinsettia, and -- most important of all -- by the family Christmas tree. Canadians decorate untold millions of trees every year. And few decisions a family may make in a year are likely to receive as much loving consideration and passionate debate as the purchase and decoration of the tree. Once chosen and set up, the tree is topped by the family star. Next come strings of electric lights, which are certain to set off arguments over whether there are too many green lights on one side and not enough blue on the other. Then come gleaming balls in brilliant colors and the gay frivolities -- the bells, lanterns, cones, reflectors and icicles, and the paper chains pasted and popcorn strung by the children. Every family divides on the issue of the final tinsel. Elders hang it strand by strand, while younger members take delight in tossing it by the handful. The family tree stands at the center of Christmas, transforming Canadian living rooms with its splendid size and fragrance. All the ceremonies around it -- the shopping together for one of just the right size and fullness, the trimming of its branches with ornaments cherished down through the years, and the excited opening of presents on Christmas morning -- serve to unite the family. . . Coleridge became acquainted with John and Maria Gisborne through their mutual friend Shelley, who described Coleridge to the Gisbornes in a letter to Maria in 1820: ''You will see Coleridge -- he who sits obscure / In the exceeding lustre and the pure / Intense irradiation of a mind, / Which, with its own internal lightning blind, / Flags wearily through darkness and despair -- / A cloud-encircled meteor of the air, / A hooded eagle among blinking owls.'' Coleridge and the Gisbornes maintained contact afterward, exchanging books and literary opinions. In a letter to J.A. Hessey dated 9 September 1823, Coleridge refers to time spent in the their educated company: “Mrs Gisborne, an excellent Spanish Scholar, together with her Husband passed the whole of yesterday with me -- in reading Calderon -- and highly amused I was…when I have acquired a power of reading Spanish, even idiomatic Spanish, rapidly (which by Mr & Mrs Gisborne's aid I shall soon do, God permitting) I will make a Volume…'' (Collected Letters of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, ed. Archive of Documents Associated with Matthew Hopkins 1st GA Infantry Matthew H. Hopkins was born in Savannah in 1837. As news of secession was reaching the region and rumors of the coming war were swirling around he joined the 18th GA State Battalion receiving a commission in late Feb. 1861. As the war erupted and continued past its Christmas "deadline" (the war is always supposed to be "over by Christmas") Hopkins transferred with a commission to his friend Charles Olmstead's 1st GA Infantry in January 1862. (Note to Civil War researchers there were numerous units known at one time or another as the 1st Georgia Infantry. This was often known as Olmstead's Regiment.)Included in this lot are: The marriage certificate of Matthew Hopkins and Margaret B. McConky 16 Nov. 1825.Will of Matthew Hopkins leaving his property to his wife Margaret and 4 children Mary B. Anna M. John D. and Matthew H. LETTER FROM ANDREW WYETH (AMERICAN, 1917-2009) TO ALICE MOORELetter from ANDREW WYETH (American, 1917-2009) to Alice Moore, Tuesday, December 28, 1937; mailed Tuesday, December 28,1937 Dearest, I certainly hope you had as fine a Christmas as I did and you were the reason for making it perfect you are just swell my dear what else can I say my dear. I will always be on time with such a clock around although I don't really think I could ever be on time for trains when I am leaving you. Please don't think that I have forgotten you but I have really been terribly busy since I last saw you. So many things have been happening here. The house has been full of relatives for the past week and I have been trying to take care of them and also keep up with the social world. I will be really glad when every thing slows up and I get back to some serious work again. I have been out to some sort of party almost every night since I left New York and I certainly have me some dim [?] people, although I did meet a young man from Maine who is very interesting and really has some brains. He is leaving for Hollywood soon where he has made some contacts to get in to the movies. I think he ought to make a success there, I'd like you to meet him. Is there any chance of you getting a hold of the current Fortune magazine Macbeth wrote and told me that there is something in it on page 158 that would interest me and I can't seem to get hold of one. I want to tell you again how swell it was of you to think of me [at] Christmas and I am counting the days until I see you. CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH AND MARGARET MACDONALD INTEREST
A BOOK OF ELFIN RHYMES BY NORMAN (PSEUD.) with 40 drawings in colour by Carton Moore Park published by Gay and Bird 1900. Inscription in pencil to front endpaper: TO HENRY STEEL DAVIDSON FROM/ MARGARET MACDONALD MACKINTOSH AND/ CHARLES RENNIE MACKINTOSH CHRISTMAS 1900, together with a folded 4-page notepaper headed ‘Windyhill/ Kilmacolm’ containing a handwritten list of “Kitty’s Books” from 1883 to 1928Literature: Davidson, Hamish R. Memories of Charles Rennie Mackintosh,Scottish Art Review, 11, no. 4, 1968, from p. 2.Note: Charles Rennie Mackintosh became acquainted with the Davidson family around 1894/95 and was commissioned in 1900 to design their new home, Windyhill in Kilmacolm. The Davidson’s remained lifelong friends and supporters of Mackintosh and his wife Margaret MacDonald.William and Jean Davidson had three sons, William Cameron (1890–1975); Hamish Reid (1893–1972) and Henry Steel (1896–1915), who was killed in action in France. From 1898 (or earlier) until 1905 (or later) Mackintosh gave Mr and Mrs Davidson and each of their sons, Christmas gifts of books inscribed by Mackintosh until 1899 and, following their marriage, inscribed by Charles and Margaret Mackintosh from 1900.In 1968, looking back more than 60 years, Hamish Reid Davidson refers to some of these books in his Memories of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. Up to 1899, gifts to the boys were from “Uncle Tosh” and from 1900 were inscribed by Charles and Margaret in the form as can be seen in ‘A Book of Elfin Rhymes’. He also says that the joint inscription from 1900 was probably by Margaret rather than Charles as it was less flamboyant than the earlier Uncle Tosh inscriptions. In 1967, Hamish Davidson compiled a list of seven Mackintosh inscribed books then in his possession (but since dispersed), a copy of which is in the Glasgow School of Art collections. This is very incomplete as the books given over the years by the Mackintoshs to the Davidson family must have numbered more than thirty. The list of seven includes only one for 1900 (to Hamish); A Child’s London by Hamish Hendry, published in 1900, with the same illustrator as A Book of Elfin Rhymes, Carton Moore Park; and only one gift to his youngest brother, Henry Steel Davidson for 1902. A Book of Elfin Rhymes is not among the seven on the list, nor are the gifts for 1900 to Mr and Mrs Davidson or William Cameron.Other than the book in this lot, only one other Christmas gift to any member of the Davidson family appears to have survived which has a pasted-in inscription for Christmas 1899 from Mackintosh to Mr and Mrs Davidson. It was donated to the Glasgow School of Art in 2014. With the book in this lot is a folded 4-page notepaper on Windyhill, Kilmacolm letterhead, headed “Kitty’s Books” and with a handwritten list of one book title each year from 1883 to 1928 and concluding with the words “The forty-fifth milestone of our friendship. The End”. How the notepaper and the book are connected is unclear. One possible, but unproven, explanation is that Mrs Davidson kept the Mackintosh-inscribed book after the death in 1915 of her youngest son Henry, and that like the Mackintosh exchange of books, the Davidsons were also in the habit of giving books to friends and the notepaper records one such series of annual gifts.Frederick William Carton Moore Park (1876-1956) was born in Stewarton, Ayrshire. He was a student at the Glasgow School of Art from 1893-97. He exhibited a painting in Vienna at the 1900 Secession Exhibition which also provided Charles and Margaret Mackintosh with their first major European exposure. His early career focused on the illustration of children’s books. In a letter of 24th December 1898 from Mackintosh to the 8 years old Cameron Davidson, he says….”I am sending you this little book of animals which has been illustrated by a young friend of mine in Glasgow…..”. Perhaps this anonymous illustrator is Carton Moore Park and the book An Alphabet of Animals, newly published by Blackie.
A Collection of Eight Signed Letters, Some Men of Fame Autograph Collection, Various Dates. Eight signed and autographed documents and letters bound in full green morocco, custom binding and interior pages, 15 3/4 x 13 1/4 in. Letters are by: 1. George Washington (1732-1799) Autograph letter signed, West Point, 19 September 1778, old folds, likely mounted, old tears repaired, 8 1/2 x 7 1/4 in. This was a busy day for the General; he wrote at least nine letters on this particular day, many concerning intelligence from spies related to the movements of British troops and sailors. This particular letter, perhaps addressed to Brigadier General Charles Scott, seems to have an immediacy in keeping with three extant letters written to Washington by Scott on 16 September 1776. It reads as follows: "Dear Sir, I had the pleasure of your letter on the 16th past. This intelligence if true is important--- I must beg you to have it as authentic as possible, and to continue your endeavors for this purpose." 2. Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) Printed pardon completed in a secretarial hand and signed by Lincoln, 24 June 1864, pardoning George Flower, Thomas Gilbert, Nicholas Martich, James Thompson, Antonio Germinovich, Thomas Kaltray, and James Perkins. The sheet toned, 10 x 7 3/4 in. 3. Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) Autograph letter signed, Headquarters of the Armies of the United States, City Point, Virginia, 31 January 1865, to Major General Parke, it reads: "Make preparation so that if called in you can move at short notice with the Army of the Potomac provided with six days rations. In case of a flank move the garrison to hold the lines will be reduced to a minimum. Such portions of the 9th & 6th Corps as you may select will be left behind, say one Division from each, and the garrison of the inclosed works or batteries. Written instructions will be sent in advance of any move." Some old folds, evenly toned, 10 x 7 1/2 in. 4. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) Autograph poem signed, 1858, the seventh verse of his poem, "Psalm of Life," first published in The Knickerbocker magazine, and later in Voices of the Night in 1839. "Lives of great men all remind us / We can make our lives sublime / And, departing, leave behind us / Footprints on the sands of time." Old folds, 6 3/4 x 4 1/2 in. 5. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) Autograph letter signed, Gad's Hill, 7 October 1857, single page letter in blue ink to journalist and theatre impresario John Hollingshead, "I am proceeding on a new plan with the Christmas Number this year, and it may be considered as already done. But I shall be very happy to write stories, either for the regular Number at Christmas time, or for the New Year's Number." Old folds, 7 x 4 1/4 in. 6. Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) Document signed, Milan, 15 August 1797, single page document in French inscribed on one page to Brigadier-General Lafon, it reads, in English translation, "I have learned with pleasure that you were happy about the tranquility of the country, as well as the good discipline of the troops under your orders. I also hear of the successful conquest in Corsica. [...] Contribute as much as you can to the tranquility of the country where you are; leave them their religion, their priests, their bells, provided that they are good citizens and that they like the French!", signed Bonaparte, 12 x 8 1/2 in. 7. Horatio Nelson (1758-1805) Autograph letter signed, 9 January 1801, single leaf inscribed on one page, to a Lieutenant Young, regarding a vacancy, toning, old folds, mounted, 9 1/4 x 7 in. 8. John Wesley (1703-1791) Autograph letter signed, London, 26 October 1782, single leaf inscribed on one page to woman named Nelly, addressed as, "My Dear Sister, For about a fortnight, I shall be out of town. I shall then stay in town a fortnight. Afterwards I shall only be in town on Saturdays & Sundays, till about the middle of December. Then I shall hope to see you. You must strive, or you cannot conquer! Wherever you are, you will be under the Shadow of the Almighty. And consequently will be just as safe as if you was sitting in your own apartment. Praise him, praise him evermore! Peace be with all your spirits! I am, Dear Nelly, Your Affectionate J. Wesley." Overall toning, old folds, mounted, 7 1/2 x 5 in. You know I am queer that way but when I get started painting I can't do anything else, in fact, I forget every thing I shouldn't I only hope now that they like what I did at Scribner's. Got word from Macbeth the other day that he sold two more of my water colors also. I had my painting of Charlie Ervine invited to the Pennsylvania Academy show. How much I have learned about painting in Tempera since I did that. I would like to do it over again. My pictures always look so terrible when I see them again after a long time. I have been learning a good deal about the bone structure of the human figure which is going to be a great help in painting it. In fact, I think that's one of the worst faults of the American painter today [sketch of six skulls and heads with notes on one, " fronal bone, angle of jaw, molar bone. "] and damn, I am not going to let it be my fault. Your letter was very encouraging Alice. I am terribly sorry that I couldn't get up that weekend but I had this work to do which made it impossible. I would like very much to meet this Mr. Enos, what is he like any way. It is probably just as well that I didn't meet him though as I really make a poor impression on other artists. I have been reading a very interesting book on journal of Eugene Delacroix. Do you know his paintings. He is one of the real French masters. He lived in the eighteen hundreds. I would like you to read it. It gives you a very intimate view of the artist as he really was. I wonder if we will get any snow this winter. It doesn't look very much like it so far. Take care of yourself for me won't you. Love, . Andy . Sunday, January 9, 1938; mailed Monday, January 10, 1938 [from Wyeth's mother, mailed in the same envelope as the letter above]. Dear Alice:. Please excuse me for being so remiss in not getting a word of thanks to you before this, for those lovely roses you sent, they were unusually lovely and looked so rich in my newly papered bedroom they were my special favorites. Has Andy thanked you for the family, for the book you sent us Christmas, I have not had time to look through it carefully, but it looks specially nice. Now that Christmas is over, I am having a little leisure to look at the various books we received, so many books on artists, have you seen them? We have been hoping for snow, for some sledding or skying, I hear you are having plenty in the north. A happy new year to you from us all. Thanking you again for your lovely roses and books. Most sincerely, . Carolyn B. Wyeth

Chris Calle (B. 1961) "Boy with Old Trains": Chris Calle (American, B. 1961) "Boy with Old Trains" Signed lower right. Original Mixed Media painting on Illustration Board. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U. S. 29c Toy Train stamp issued October 22, 1992. . . Nothing quite compares to the aroma of a mother's kitchen on Christmas morning. The scents of roasting turkey, baking pies and steaming plum pudding not only invigorate one's appetite, but also stir memories of Christmases past. Feasting on special occasions is an age-old custom dating back to the ancient days of the hunter and gatherer. Primitive man ate when he could. After a successful hunt he gorged himself on meat . and more meat. When berries were ripe, he ate berries . and more berries. With the advent of agriculture, the harvest marked a time of plenty, and people ate heartily when the crops were in. Perhaps the most fabled holiday feast in humankind's history was served in England on Christmas Day in 1770, at Sir Henry Grey's. It consisted of one pie that measured 9 feet in circumference and weighed twelve stone -- 168 pounds. Inside, baked to perfection, were four geese, four wild ducks, two woodcocks, two turkeys, four partridges, seven blackbirds, six pigeons, two rabbits, two cow's tongues, two bushels of flour, 20 pounds of butter and various other items. This meal spawned the English colloquialism: "The Devil himself dare not appear in Cornwall during Christmas for fear of being baked in a pie. " . . Image Size: 13. 75 x 12. 5 in. . 2V John Gabriel Stedman NARRATIVE OF A FIVE YEARS' EXPEDITION AGAINST THE REVOLTED NEGROES OF SURINAM 1813 Antique History South America Slavery Indigenous Peoples Fold Title: Narrative of a Five Years' Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam, in Guiana, on the Wild Coast of South America; From the Year 1772, to 1777: Elucidating the History of That Country, and Describing Its Productions, Viz. Quadrupedes, Birds, Fishes, Reptiles, Trees, Shrubs, Fruits, & Roots; With an Account of the Indians of Guiana, & Negroes of GuineaAuthor: John Gabriel Stedman - John Gabriel Stedman was a distinguished British–Dutch soldier and noted author. He was born in 1744 in Dendermonde, which then was in the Austrian Netherlands, to Robert Stedman, a Scot and an officer in the Dutch Republic's Scots Brigade, and his wife of presumed Dutch noble lineage, Antoinetta Christina van Ceulen. He lived most of his childhood in the Dutch Republic with his parents but spent time with his uncle in Scotland. Stedman described his childhood as being "chock-full of misadventures and abrasive encounters of every description." His years in Surinam, on the northern coast of South America, were characterized by encounters with African slaves and colonial planters, as well as the exotic local flora and fauna. He recorded his experiences in "The Narrative of a Five Years Expedition against the Revolted Negroes of Surinam" (1796) which, with its firsthand depictions of slavery and other aspects of colonization, became an important tool in the early abolitionist cause. (Information courtesy of Wikipedia)Publisher: Printed for J. Johnson & Th. PayneCity: LondonYear: 1813Printing Information: Second EditionBinding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 2 Full Set: YesWidth: 9" Height: 11"Book Details: Stedman's "Narrative" was published by Joseph Johnson, a radical figure who received criticism for the types of books he sold. In the 1790s, more than 50 percent of them were political, including Stedman's Narrative. The books he published supported the rights of slaves, Jews, women, prisoners and other oppressed members of society. Johnson was an active member of the Society for Constitutional Information, an organization attempting to reform Parliament. He was condemned for the support and publication of writers who voiced liberal opinions, such as Mary Wollstonecraft, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Paine.Stedman's "Narrative" became a major literary success. It was translated into a half-dozen languages and was eventually published in more than twenty-five different editions. Stedman was highly acclaimed for his insights on the slave trade and his "Narrative" was embraced by the abolitionist cause. Paradoxically, it also became the handbook for anti-guerilla combat in the tropics.Interestingly, it took almost two centuries for a critical edition to be published. An abridged edition published in 1992 by Richard and Sally Price remains in print, as well as an edition published in 1962 by Stanbury Thompson. A facsimile edition of the 1988 unabridged critical edition, edited by Richard and Sally Price, was published in 2010 by iUniverse and remains available. Thanks to its portrayal of a strong female slave, abolitionists decided to publish the chapter on Joanna from the Narrative as a pamphlet in 1838. Stedman's "Narrative" is commonly read in university classes as an example of abolitionist literature.Stedman's "Narrative" associated him with some of Britain's foremost radicals. His publisher, Johnson, was imprisoned in 1797 for printing the political writings of Gilbert Wakefield. Johnson commissioned William Blake and Francesco Bartolozzi to create engravings for the Narrative. Blake engraved sixteen images for the book and delivered them in December of 1792 and 1793, as well as a single plate in 1794. The images depict some of the horrific atrocities against slaves that Stedman witnessed, including hanging, lashing and other forms of torture. The Blake plates are more forceful than other illustrations in the book and have the "fluidity of line" and "hallucinatory quality of his original work." It is impossible to compare Stedman's sketches with the Blake plates because none of Stedman's original drawings have survived. Through their collaboration, Blake and Stedman became close friends. They visited one another often, and Blake later included some of his images from Stedman's Narrative in his poem "Visions of the Daughters of Albion." Taken from Charles Dickens' tale A Christmas Carol, in which Ebenezer Scrooge witnesses the three spirits that cause such a change in his outlook on life. The Spirit of Christmas Past showed him how the past heartache in his childhood and his bad choices caused the hardening of his heart and how deeply it cost him in the end; seeing what could have been his to enjoy and then thinking it could still be his with the Spirit of Christmas Present only to find out the future does not hold love or joy for him by the Spirit of Christmas Yet to Come and instead his actions leave him robbed at death and no one left to grieve for him. Zou Jianjun (B. 1943) "Year of the Rooster": Zou Jianjun (Chinese, B. 1943) "Year of the Rooster" Stamped in the upper left and lower right corner, signed verso. Original Watercolor on Rice paper painting taped to wood. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was published on the Fleetwood Combination First Day of Issue Proofcard for the U. S. /China Year of the Rooster stamps issued December 30, 1992. . . In the United States, one of the most festive occasions of the year lasts for two days. Riding in on the coattails of Christmas, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day are the "grand finales" of the holiday season. On December 31, the new year is typically ushered in by a gala celebration. At the stroke of midnight, the past year is bid a fond farewell amidst joyful cries, the blare of noisemakers and a warm embrace. Many revelers can be found on crowded dance floors awash with a myriad of colorful balloons and confetti. Traditionally, strains of Auld Lang Syne, made popular by Guy Lombardo, fill the airwaves. In contrast to New Year's Eve festivities, New Year's Day activities are customarily more sedate. One of the most popular pastimes is viewing a "Bowl Game. " Championship football is played by college teams across the nation, and elaborate parades "kick off" the start of every match. New Year's Day is also a time for both young and old to reflect on the past and ponder the future. Earnest resolutions are made and broken only to be revived the following year! Like Westerners, the Chinese also welcome the new year with joyful celebrations. But unlike Westerners, they follow a lunar calendar aligned in repeating 12-year cycles, with each year represented by one of 12 animals. It is believed those born during 1993 -- the Year of the Rooster -- will be stubborn, logical and highly successful. . . Image Size: 11. 75 x 10. 25 in. . Overall Size: 15. 5 x 12. 75 in. . Outstanding large Signature, "Grand ma Moses" on white card, 2. 5" x 5" professionally matted and framed within decorative gilt wood with photograph, to 12" x 17", Choice Near Mint. Ready for display, her magnificent bold signature is a massive 4. 25" long!. Anna Mary Robertson Moses (1860 - 1961) is better known as "Grandma Moses. " She was a renowned American folk artist. She is often cited as an example of an individual successfully beginning a career in the arts at an advanced age. Her family and friends called her either "Mother Moses" or "Grandma Moses", and although she first exhibited as "Mrs. Moses", the press eagerly dubbed her "Grandma Moses", which stuck. LIFE magazine celebrated her 100th birthday by featuring her on its September 19, 1960 cover. . Grandma Moses' paintings were used to publicize numerous American holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas and Mother's Day. Exemplary of her status, a Mother's Day Feature in True Confessions (1947) noted how "Grandma Moses remains prouder of her preserves than of her paintings, and proudest of all of her four children, eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. ". . During the 1950s, Grandma Moses' exhibitions were so popular that they broke attendance records all over the world. "A cultural icon, the spry, productive nonagenarian was continually cited as an inspiration for housewives, widows and retirees. Her images of America's rural past were transferred to curtains, dresses, cookie jars, and dinner ware, and used to pitch cigarettes, cameras, lipstick and instant coffee. ". . In 1950, the National Press Club cited her as one of the five most newsworthy women and the National Association of House Dress Manufacturers honored her as their 1951 Woman of the Year. At age 88, Mademoiselle magazine named Grandma Moses a "Young Woman of the Year". Philadelphia's Moore College of Art awarded her its first honorary doctorate degree. Due to a lingering cold, she received the degree in absentia, presenting her acceptance speech via a special telephone hookup.
