LARGE CARVED WOODEN CIGAR STORE INDIAN LIFE SIZEDFor your consideration is this hand carved, solid wood Cigar Store Indian, polychrome painted. The general Cigar Store Indian was first used in 17th century English shops to advertise American tobacco to a still illiterate European population. Historically, these carvings would be placed outside of tobacco outlets, signifying to passerby's that the establishment sold tobacco products. Loosely based on an 1875 carving by Thomas Brooks of New York's Auer Tobacco Company, this contemporary, solid wood carved Cigar Store Indian displays a dark painted Native American Warrior adorned with a full headdress, traditionally known as a trailer war bonnet, accent fringed leggings, moccasins, American flag designed breechcloth, and a knife in sheath situated on his waist belt right hip. The war bonnet also has red, white, and blue coloring. The figure is shown holding a cluster of cigars in his left hand while holding up his right hand and looking into the distance. His neck is wrapped with a badger hide. War bonnets were traditionally worn by male leaders of the tribe who have earned great respect. Originally, a full headdress would have been worn into battle, but now they are used primarily for ceremonial purposes. The piece shows good condition overall, with some light wear. The Cigar Store Indian measures 70.5"H x 24"W x 16"D approximately.*

Antique American Painted Wood Cigar Store Indian: United States, ca. late 19th to early century CE. A tall wooden statue of a cigar store Indian, a figure once used to advertise tobacconists. The chief stands upright wearing a tall feathered headdress as well as traditional leather clothing with fringes, and carrying a hatchet. In one hand is a bundle of rolled cigars, a symbol of his purpose. The face and hands are painted a bright red hue, and black hair hangs past his shoulders. Size: 10" L x 8" W x 49" H (25. 4 cm x 20. 3 cm x 124. 5 cm). . This figure was intended to be eye catching and easily recognizable by illiterate people. Tobacco was cultivated by Native Americans for thousands of years and became popular with the Europeans as a cash crop for use and trade. Tobacco shops quickly popped up around Europe and the American colonies. The illiterate could easily identify these shops by the large carvings of Native Americans, often holding bundles of cigars and dressed in eye catching feather headdresses, much like this example. These statues fell out of favor in the early 20th century, largely due to sidewalk obstruction laws; however, they are now highly collectible items. This is a fine example! . . Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. . . A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. . These unique characteristics have been compared to an unrecorded carver who was known to have worked towards the end of the 19th century in the Baltimore, Maryland and Wilmington, Delaware regions.
