Overall Size: 15.75 x 19 in. Oil on board. On one of his numerous painting trips to Venice he met the noted Venetian artist Felix Ziem, the man who greatly influenced his work for the remainder of his life.Bouvard became very popular owing to his sensitive understanding of Venice. Not only did he capture the activity and glamour of famous scenes like the Grand Canal and the Santa Maria Della Salute but he also caught the atmosphere and serentiy of the backwaters. His paintings demonstrate his architectural skill whilst reflecting his love of Venice's unique light effects. Bouvard was a master in capturing the unforgettable atmosphere of Venice. He exhibited throughout France and Italy as well as many provincial European galleries during his own lifetime.

Theodore Wendel (American 1859-1932) "View of Venice along the Rio Nuovo Canal" c. 1878-80 oil on canvas signed "Theo Wendel" lower right 21 in. x 24 in. in a period Arts and Crafts-style carved and giltwood frame. Note: Theodore Wendel was one of the most successful and respected Impressionist landscape painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. A native of Ohio Wendel studied with Thomas Noble at the McMicken School of Art at the University of Cincinnati. He traveled to Munich Germany in 1878 with his good friend Joseph DeCamp to study with Frank Duveneck at the Munich Academy. Wendel and his friends became known as the "Duveneck Boys" and the group included Duveneck Chase Whistler and Twachtman. From 1878 to 1880 they painted landscapes and figural paintings in Polling outside Munich as well as in Florence and Venice. Most of Wendel's paintings from this period disappeared and are very rare. The view offered here is from this time and depicts the Rio Nuovo canal in Venice. Using soft shades of rose pale blue and green Wendel's gestural brushwork produced an early work of Impressionism by an American artist. Later in 1887-88 Wendel studied in France and became good friends with Claude Monet. He was one of the few American artists whose work Monet chose to praise. Wendel's career was curtailed by illness in 1917 and despite being one of the most important American Impressionists his reputation gradually faded and he fell into obscurity. His work was basically forgotten until John I. Bauer organized an exhibition of his paintings in 1976 at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.

He participated in numerous exhibitions in Italy including the Milan Exhibitions of 1872, 1883, and 1886; the Torino Exhibition of 1884; and the Venice Exhibition of 1887. The romantic and decadent themes typical of his era, characterize many of his paintings. The subject matter of his paintings includes nuns, family, gallant compositions, Renaissance scenes in period costumes, flowers, and landscapes, particularly of the canals in Venice, for which he is best known.

JAMES A. M. WHISTLER Quiet Canal. Etching and drypoint printed in dark, brownish black on antique, cream laid paper, 1879-80. 229x150 mm; 9x6 inches, full margins. MacDonald's third state (of 4) or an early fourth state (of 4), still with pentimenti of the redrawn prow on the gondola with the seated man center foreground and before the further darkening of the same prow with drypoint, before the scratches across the doorway furthest to the right. Edition of approximately only 30. Signed with the butterfly and inscribed "imp." in pencil, lower left. From Twenty-Six Etchings. A superb, well-inked and dark impression of this very scarce etching with warm plate tone and with all the details distinct. This is from Whistler's second set of Venice etchings, one of 26 subjects in all (there were 12 etchings in the first set), published in an edition of approximately 30 by Dowdeswell and Dowdeswell, London, in 1886. The first Venice set was exhibited at the Fine Art Society, London, in December 1880; a larger exhibition including the second set of Venice etchings was held in 1883. Meanwhile, the printings of both of these sets varied dramatically (and reversedly): the second set was fully printed by July 1887, while the first set was still incomplete at the artist's death in 1903. According to MacDonald, the scene is, "East of the Rialto Bridge, with, on the right, the corner of the Palazzo Soranzo-Venier-Sanudo-van Axel-Barozzi, Venice, Italy. The Palazzo was much painted and photographed; it has a decorative 15th century wooden door." However, Whistler focused on the canal rather than the popular palazzo at the right; he drew the etching directly on the copper plate as was his pratice in Venice. Kennedy 214; Glasgow 224.- 30,000

SARGENT FAMILY FEDERAL INLAID BURLWOOD AND SATINWOOD WO...Boston, attributed to John and Thomas Seymour, 1800-1810, top in finely grained burlwood veneer surrounded by Greek key banding, rich, exuberant satinwood drawer facings and case sides, dovetailed drawers with tropical exotic hardwood secondary, one side with pull out work bag, finely turned and reeded legs with brass casters, 29-3/4 x 20 x 15-3/4 in.
Literature: Robert D. Mussey Jr., The Furniture Masterworks of John and Thomas Seymour , pg. 294-295
Note: This exceptional table is arguably the best Boston Federal work table in private hands. It was discovered at the Palazzo Barbaro in Venice, having been transported there in the mid 19th century by Daniel Sargent Curtis and his wife, Ariana Randolf Wormeley Curtis, as part of the furnishings for the 60-room palazzo on the Grand Canal in Venice. Ariana was the granddaughter of Elizabeth Derby Preble, a niece of Elias Hasket Derby of Salem, thus linking this table to two of the most important families of early Boston - the Sargents and the Derbys. It is possible the table may have descended through the Derby family, as Ariana Curtis was the only surviving member of the Preble family. It is the mate to a table at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston (accession no. 1990.172). The sister table is illustrated in Vernon C. Stoneman, A Supplement to John and Thomas Seymour, Cabinetmakers in Boston , 1794-1816, catalog no. 49. Robert Mussey notes in his catalog entry for this table in The Furniture Masterworks of John and Thomas Seymour that, in addition to surviving extraordinarily well, the table is “even rarer in being one of a pair, the two being different only in their hardware pull patterns. The veneers on the tables are cut from the same flitches of veneer and placed identically on the various surfaces. The numerals “N1” and “2” (on this table) are inscribed in chalk on the matching drawer bottoms, indicating the tables were made in the Seymour shop at the same time.” The table offered here and its sister table at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, rank among the finest surviving examples from Federal Boston.
Condition:
Robert Mussey notes in the catalog entry for this table in The Furniture Masterworks of John and Thomas Seymour that "the table has survived extraordinarily well, with virtually no repairs except refinishing." Mussey also notes the table retains its original bag slide mechanism intact, a rare survival; top with some minor abrasions with some possible color retouch and some areas of wax drip, minor warping and one edge crack to top, typical checking to figured veneers, brasses probably original (no plugged holes), small areas of dents and distress at lower center skirt
