OVERSIZED LATE 19TH CENTURY SWISS CYLINDER MUSIC BOX 10" thick (tall) x 14-?"wide x 34" long 173/16" long brass cylinder, pegged to play eight tunes (aires), with pointer to show the related tune, which was once listed on a card stock placard. Four combs with all teeth, heavy brass mainspring barrel and hinged winding handle. Heavy decorative hinged huckles on the far ends of the wooden case. The case has king's wood borders, with burl inlaid center panels, for three sides of the exterior and case top, with a decorative brass shield and scroll border on the case top, including a surround of mother of pearl pieces, all within an ebony inlay. The interior of the case top features a fine king's wood border and birdseye maple center panel. Glass access cover is black enameled with a fine king's wood border. Black enamel accents on the interior and exterior edges. Simple start/stop and repeat tune lever. Sound board in good condition. Provenance: Life time collection of esteemed Professor and his Vice-Chancellor wife, Pittsburgh, PA.
