BEN. FRANKLIN CONSTITUTIONS DES TRIEIZE ETATS 1783 Constitutions Des Treize Etats-Unis de l'Amerique. Printed 1783 by D. Pierres, Paris. Contains the first printed appearance of the Great Seal of the United States designed by Benjamin Franklin. The Franklin-inspired French edition of the Constitutions of the original thirteen states of the newly created United States of America. Only 600 copies were printed for Franklin, of which 100 were on large paper. Franklin was then Ambassador to the French Court and had just completed negotiations with Great Britain for the independence of the United States. The work was translated by the Duc de la Rochefoucauld at Franklin's suggestion and includes over 50 footnote annotations by the latter. "Franklin's grand gesture in publishing and distributing these constitutions, about which there was an intense interest and curiosity among statesman, was one of his chief achievements as propagandist for the new American Republic" - Streeter. Also included are the Declaration of Independence, Articles of Confederation, and the treaties between the United States and France, the Low Countries, and Sweden. PENNSYLVANIA CONVENTION, SIGNED PAY DOCUMENT, 1790 Here is a fully endorsed pay document for Thomas Ball who was a delegate from Chester County, Pennsylvania, to the state of Pennsylvania constitutional convention held in Philadelphia. This document is to make compensation available to Mr. Ball for a sum of 62 pounds, for his service in the matter. It was signed by Thomas Mifflin (1744-1800) who was an American merchant, soldier, and politician from Pennsylvania, who is regarded as a Founding Father of the United States for his roles during and after the American Revolution. Mifflin signed the United States Constitution, was the first governor of Pennsylvania, serving from 1790 to 1799, and was also the state's last president, succeeding Benjamin Franklin in 1788. This piece is nicely framed.

6TH MASSACHUSETTS VOLUNTEER MILITIA LIQUOR CHEST ,C. 1864-70sBlack japanned leather covered case, marked on the front in gold paint "B.F. GODDARD./6th M.V.M.", blue velvet-lining with separations for bottles, and eight bottles with gold paint numbers and designs on the top, a bottle of brandy, and shot glasses. Note: Benjamin Franklin Goddard was born on April 4, 1839 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. In 1861 when the Civil War broke out, Goddard was living in Lowell, Massachusetts. He enlisted as a private in Company C, 6th Massachusetts Infantry Militia on April 22, 1861 serving in Maryland for 90 days. He enlisted as a sergeant in the same unit on August 2, 1862 and was promoted to first sergeant on February 1, 1863 and served with the 7th Corps in Hampton, Virginia. After his nine-month enlistment was up, he enlisted again as a captain in the same unit and was mustered out of service on October 27, 1864. Goddard continued to serve as an officer in the 6th Massachusetts rising to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the regiment. His name appears in all of the post-war musters. In 1871 he had an issue with the state in an affair called "The Liquor Inquest" and had a warrant issued against him. In 1875 he filed for bankruptcy with the state. He died on March 5, 1911 at the age of 71.

Catalogue Note: After the Revolution, on September 21, 1785, the first highway legislation passed by the Pennsylvania General Assembly provided for the laying out of a state highway from western Cumberland County to Pittsburgh. Legislation continued to be enacted which created more roads in Pennsylvania, establishing the precursors of many current highways.

Friends with Fred Davis, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, and the artistic elite of Mexico, Arquin would compile a vast collection of photographic imagery that would become the cornerstone of Latin American studies throughout North America. Her extensive travels and own artistic pursuits culminated in a 1943 exhibition at the Benjamin Franklin Library. Diego Rivera praised Arquin's "ardent work and exuberance of style," explaining, "Florence Arquin sees with every pore of her skin. Her nerves absorb the vibration of color, the inflections of the forms, the quality of the earth, of the air, and of the light, for the purpose of synthesizing all of these in her painting" in the catalog preface.
