Pair of Trench art jugs, vases, pair of brass vases and J. & M. P. Bells punch bowl
1811 $5 Small 5 AU58 NGC BD-2 R.3. Nicely struck with light natural toning and no surface distractions on either side. A few degrees of counterclockwise die rotation are noted as the coin turns from obverse to reverse. The Capped Bust Large Bust left half eagle was produced 1807 to 1812. The head punch is by John Reich's whose secret signature a notch out of one point on star 13 appears on all dies from this period. Liberty wears a floppy cap said to have been the style of the day when Reich decked her out in it with drapery and a clasped bust prominent forehead curl. Reich's eagle punch has the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM above with the eagle in a more naturalistic pose than the heraldic type of the previous design. Events of 1811: During the winter of 1811-12 the central Mississippi Valley was struck by three of the most powerful earthquakes in U.S. history. Even today this region has more earthquakes than any other part of the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. The 400 terrified residents in the town of New Madrid (Missouri) were abruptly awakened by violent shaking and a tremendous roar. It was December 16 1811 and a powerful earthquake had just struck. So powerful were the series of tremors that some sections of the Mississippi River appeared to run backward for a short time. The shockwaves propagated efficiently through Midwestern bedrock to where residents as far away as Pittsburgh and Norfolk were awakened by intense shaking. Church bells were reported to ring as far as Boston Massachusetts and York Ontario (now Toronto) and sidewalks were reported to have been cracked and broken in Washington D.C. There were also reports of toppled chimneys in Maine. (PCGS 8109)

RENOIR, PIERRE AUGUSTE. 1841–1919.
"JUSQU'À PRÉSENT, LA PEINTURE SEULE A ÉCHAPPÉ AU PROGRÈS."
Autograph Manuscript Signed ("Renoir"), being a draft of his preface to the 1911 edition of Cennino Cennini's Livre d'art, ou Traité de la Peinture, 40 pp of which 7 are in another hand, mostly 4to (ruled sheets taken from an exercise book), sections dated May 10 and June 1, 1910, [probably Cagnes-sur-Mer, 1909-1910], minimal toning, chips, or fold separation.
"Art is the true history of peoples. It's in art that we have a view of their way of life and their ideals."
Victor Mottez, "painter of the Belle Epoque" and "pupil of Ingres," had published in 1858 a translation of a technical manual known as the Libro dell'arte by the fourteenth century artist Cennino Cennini. Mottez's translation was based on an incomplete manuscript, and some time after Mottez's death in 1897, his son Henri began to work on a more complete text. Henri intended the new edition to be a memorial to his father, and commissioned Renoir to write a preface.
Renoir's preface takes the form of a letter to Henri Mottez. In its published form, as it appeared in 1911, the preface discussed the painter as craftsman—painting as a craft like woodwork or ironmongery. Each artist was simply part of the continuum from Greek to Christian art. And whereas in the past a skilled artisan could have produced a work of genius, in the age of mechanization creativity has been suppressed.
The present manuscript is significantly longer than the published version, and we can see Renoir working and reworking his arguments. It represents the climax of Renoir's preoccupation with the decorative arts—he began his career as a painter of Limoges porcelain—and time after time he eulogizes a golden age while cursing the industrial one.
Excerpts: "One is filled with enthusiasm by all the marvels created by workers since the olden times of monks who made themselves architects, masons, sculptors, or painters... They knew how to make cheerful earthenware, tapestries, enamels, forged iron, and above all, without suspecting it, the glory and fortune of their country... Slavery has been abolished, but the factory has been created... We still have painting and this is why, my dear Mottez, I urged you to re-edit your father's work, the translation of Cennino, who shows us painters, still then workers... who, respectful of tradition, created these works which after several centuries we can admire in our museums... How many things young painters can draw from this treatise that I came to know too late!... This book is a reliable painting lesson, and is even more valuable because of the morality that flows from it. It shows us these painters of olden times with their simple and uncomplicated lives... I'm terrified by the Luxembourg [the gallery of 'living artists'] merely by entering the sculpture hall which gives me just one idea, to flee out of fear of receiving kicks and punches from these terrified and blanched statues. In the Louvre I find again old friends with whom I love to rest for a long time and in whom I always discover new qualities. Their calm poses give them something eternal and if there's movement as in the Kermesse [by Rubens], these people are at home and so little aware of being looked at that their playfulness, far from tiring you, makes you wish to be among them. How one would like to be in a landscape by Corot!... Cennino Cennini's treatise comes from one of the most glorious eras of Christian art."
Of additional interest are two passages on photography and its role in art history: "Among the many inventions more harmful than useful, there's one that hasn't harmed anyone and that provides unlimited pleasure. I mean photography. To travel round the world without cost and fatigue you only have to go and sit down at one of the photograph shops on the rue Bonaparte... Needing a fireplace, I sat down one day in one of [them]... They brought out for me an album of interiors, all the fireplaces from earliest convents to châteaux... Having found what I wanted, I began to look at other albums, and in that way I made a most instructive and interesting tour of France." (English translation from Robert L. Herbert, Nature's Workshop, 2000.)
Renoir is seldom thought of as a theoretical or intellectual painter; yet the present manuscript sheds light on his philosophy of art, which was abbreviated and diluted in the published preface.

Elliott, LTD, London with nine tubular bells marked Walter H. Durfee, Prov. RI, dead-beat escapement, rack and snail strike, brass-faced seconds-beating pendulum and three brass-cased weights, ht. 119 in. Provenance: This clock was part of the original furnishings of the W.P. Brown mansion on 4717 St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans. This four story, 22,000 square foot Romanesque revival mansion was built by Brown between 1901 and 1904 as the promised gift to his wife of the "most palatial dwelling in New Orleans". According to accounts, many rooms of the house and the grand staircase were sheathed in flame mahogany, a perfect backdrop for this mahogany timekeeping masterpiece for nearly 80 years. The second owners of the house and clock were William Joseph Gibbens, Jr. and his wife Florieda Batson (1901-1996) who by the end of 1930 moved into the elegant dwelling. After the passing of William, Florieda sold the mansion and gave the prized clock to her grandaughter, the present consignor in 1979. It is interesting to note that Florieda was the captain of the first Woman's World Games in Paris, 1922. Called by some the "Woman's Olympics", these games were the prelude to allowing woman to compete in the formerly all male Olympic Games. Her many silver trophies, like the clock, adorned the mansion. For other related examples with oak primary wood, please see Skinner Clocks, Watches and Scientific Instruments sale, November 2, 2013, lots 308 and 309. Note: Illustrations of the Brown Mansion shown in the catalogue and online are not sold with this lot. J.J. Elliott Monumental Carved Mahogany Quarter-chiming Hall Clock, c. 1900, case attributed to R.J. Horner & Co., W. 23rd Street, New York, from the estate of Colonel Park Shaw of Carefree, Arizona, finely carved removable crest with winged figures flanking a center raised boss supported by flowers, leaves, and scroll decoration over the gadrooned crown molding, below winged griffins flank the composite brass arabic numeral dial with seconds bit, subsidiary dials for Chime-Silent and Westminster/Whittington chime selection, moon's age in the arch and pierced brass grillwork on spandrels and center, the glazed waist door flanked by human and fish-form caryatids over the fully carved base panel with central putti, birds, a grotesque mask, and allegorical human depictions of the wind on a punch-decorated ground, eight-day, three-train, quarter-chiming movement by J.J. Elliott, LTD, London, with nine tubular bells, deadbeat escapement, rack and snail strike, brass-faced seconds-beating pendulum and three brass-cased weights, ht. 116 in. Provenance: This clock was reportedly owned by John Jacob Astor IV of the prominent Astor family of New York. Purchased from Tiffany & Co. of New York in the early 20th century by Mr. Astor and given as a gift to a friend by the name of Ms. Huntington, a Metropolitan Opera singer. After the passing of Mr. Astor in 1914 aboard the famous Titanic, Ms. Huntington sold it to a Dr. and Mrs. John A. Burke, an eminent New York physician. Dr. Burke and his wife retired to Pittsfield, Massachusetts, his native city, sometime in the late 1920s early 1930s. An article dated October 1934 appeared in the Berkshire Evening Eagle titled "John Jacob Astor's Clock Stands in Local Homestead" recalls a short history of the clock. It was then gifted to or purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Shaw in 1967, also of Pittsfield. It was then handed down to A. Park Shaw Jr. who became a Colonel in the U.S. Army and resided in his later years in Carefree, Arizona, until his death last year. Mrs. Cherri Shaw is parting with this beloved family piece with a heavy heart but believes it will find a new caring custodian. There is extensive family history, including black-and-white photographs, repair invoices, and original typed correspondences between R.P. Swanson, manager of the clocks department at Tiffany & Co., R.W. Elliott of F.W.
