Minor wear, some firing imperfections, losses to the decoration, crazing and light staining. There is a burst bubble to the interior and a small related crack to one wall. A few small areas of the underside of rim restored. Provenance: purchased from Alister Mathews, Great Britain in 1965. Mathews was an antique dealer born in Watford, England on April 7th, 1907. During the 1920”s, he operated Grayhound Press, a private press through which he published his friend Monk Gibbon. From the early 1950’s until some time in the 1970’s, he operated as a dealer in prints and drawings, rare books and manuscripts. He sold Indian paintings to the British Museum in 1943, prints and drawings to the P&D from the 1950’s onwards.

CARVED GERMAN TANKARD, LATE 19TH CENTURYA late 19th century German silver (.812 fine) tankard, the hinged lid and finial affixed to a scrolled handle opening to a richly gilded interior, the cylindrical body carved in high relief depicting Bacchus holding clusters of grapes, surrounded by putti & followers, raised upon a flaring silver gilt base. Splits & repairs to body, damageg & repaireg to finial, stamped marks on underside of base likely those for Georg Roth & Company, Hanau Germany, together with a British Antique Dealers Association (BADA) decal.
