The carved ivory figures are cradled inside in padded black velvet fit in an inlaid wood case; half are in natural color with pigmented accents and the other half are dyed a light brown color. A carved ivory figural of a bearded man with a lion at his feet, approx. 10-1/4"H including the black painted 2"H base. Label on the underside from Sadows Auction. The expressively carved figure raises his right arm, his hand clutching an object. He looks down at the lion over his left shoulder with a frightened expression. The stylized lion sits behind the man's feet, intricately carved and with a regal expression. Possibly a depiction of Androcles and the lion from the Aesop fable. In that story, Androcles first turns to flee from the lion who lies still and does not pursue him. Prov: The J.A. Appelhof collection of Ivories, Jades and Hardstones; auctioned at the C. B. Comprising a Chinese enameled metal cylindrical box and cover with fu dog finial (losses to enamel); three carved ivory figures of elephants; one carved ivory figure of a pig; a Japanese bronze model of an elephant, signed Bisho/Yoshimasa, Meiji/Taisho Period (tusks possibly repaired); and a Japanese carved ivory seal-form netsuke, the top carved as a seated Hotei, the bottom carved with the character takara, signed Gashi/Masayoshi.
