TN Miniature Portrait of Man, Calvert Oval Watercolor on ivory portrait attributed to Ebenezer Calvert (Tennessee, 1850-1924) depicting a man in his late 50s or early 60s, likely William E. Armstrong of Nashville, with white beard and receding dark hair, dressed in a gray suit with black tie and decorated white collar. Pencil inscription en verso "1878 W.E. Armstrong / E. Calvert pinxt Giers Gallery". 2 1/4" x 1 3/4". Housed in a hinged blue silk oval case. Note: William E. Armstrong (b. 1832) purchased the photography gallery owned by C.C. Giers following Giers' death in 1877, and operated it until 1883, when he leased it to Emil Koellein, James Patterson, and eventually, a third partner: Giers' son Otto. Ebenezer Calvert and his brother Peter R. Calvert (1855-1931) were born in Yorkshire England, where they studied art. They immigrated to America in the 1870s. Arriving in Nashville, they worked for several galleries before setting up their own studio in the downtown area. The brothers taught art and did oil and watercolor paintings, pastels, crayon drawings, and miniatures on ivory (source: The Tennessee Encyclopedia). Although no documentation has been found for the Calverts' employment at Giers Gallery, it is likely that they worked for Armstrong when he took over the gallery after Giers death, and this miniature may have been painted as an advertising piece, since it has descended in the Giers/Hicks family. Provenance: the estate of Giers descendant Sarah Hunter Hicks Green, formerly of Historic Devon Farm, Nashville, Tennessee. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)

Laid into the above.Joseph Y. Jeanes was among the best turn of the 20th-century Philadelphia collectors. Assembling an impressive library, which included original Audubon drawings (now located at Harvard), Jeanes was a notable member of the Library Company among other Philadelphia-area institutions. It appears that he collected these images over a long period, with internal evidence suggesting some to have come from historian Joseph Jackson and antiquary Ferdinand J. Dreer. Among the photographers represented are John Moran, the brother of the noted western artist. Moran, whose images display remarkable quality and composition, is considered among the most artistic photographers of the post-Civil War period. In 1875, he wrote of photography: “Art in all its forms is the form of thought, and the photographic work which rises to this plane is the expression of the ideas of the photographer. Nature in some sort becomes plastic to his touch, and he moulds her to his judgement; this, however, he does by selection rather than construction; this happy selection comes from the power to see the beautiful, and results from a highly trained taste” (“Thoughts on Art, Nature and Photography” in The Philadelphia Photographer, June 1875).While institutional holdings of these or similar images are substantial, most notably by the Library Company and the Free Library of Philadelphia, those collections were largely assembled at the same time that this album was compiled by Jeanes. Similar albums, or even individual images from this period, seldom come to market.

12V THE WRITINGS OF OSCAR WILDE 1925 Limited Edition Antique English Literature Poetry Drama Essays Dorian Gray Reviews Aestheticism Title: The Writings of Oscar WildeAuthor: Oscar Wilde - Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde was an Irish writer and poet. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of London's most popular playwrights in the early 1890s. Today he is remembered for his epigrams and plays, and the circumstances of his imprisonment which was followed by his early death.Wilde's parents were successful Dublin intellectuals. Their son became fluent in French and German early in life. At university Wilde read Greats; he proved himself to be an outstanding classicist, first at Dublin, then at Oxford. He became known for his involvement in the rising philosophy of aestheticism, led by two of his tutors, Walter Pater and John Ruskin. After university, Wilde moved to London into fashionable cultural and social circles. As a spokesman for aestheticism, he tried his hand at various literary activities: he published a book of poems, lectured in the United States and Canada on the new "English Renaissance in Art", and then returned to London where he worked prolifically as a journalist. Known for his biting wit, flamboyant dress, and glittering conversation, Wilde became one of the best-known personalities of his day.At the turn of the 1890s, he refined his ideas about the supremacy of art in a series of dialogues and essays, and incorporated themes of decadence, duplicity, and beauty into his only novel, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (1890). The opportunity to construct aesthetic details precisely, and combine them with larger social themes, drew Wilde to write drama. He wrote "Salome" (1891) in French in Paris but it was refused a licence. Unperturbed, Wilde produced four society comedies in the early 1890s, which made him one of the most successful playwrights of late Victorian London. At the height of his fame and success, while his masterpiece, "The Importance of Being Earnest" (1895), was still on stage in London, Wilde had the Marquess of Queensberry, the father of his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, prosecuted for libel, a charge carrying a penalty of up to two years in prison. The trial unearthed evidence that caused Wilde to drop his charges and led to his own arrest and trial for gross indecency with other men. After two more trials he was convicted and imprisoned for two years' hard labour. In 1897, in prison, he wrote "De Profundis," which was published in 1905, a long letter which discusses his spiritual journey through his trials, forming a dark counterpoint to his earlier philosophy of pleasure. Upon his release he left immediately for France, never to return to Ireland or Britain. There he wrote his last work, "The Ballad of Reading Gaol" (1898), a long poem commemorating the harsh rhythms of prison life. He died destitute in Paris at the age of forty-six.Publisher: Gabriel WellsCity: New YorkYear: 1925Printing Information: Limited EditionBinding Style: HardcoverNumber of Volumes: 12 Full Set: YesWidth: 6.25" Height: 9.25"Book Details: The contents of this work are distributed as follows: v. 1.
