A John Fitch American coin silver cream pitcher. A John Fitch American coin silver cream pitcherLast quarter 18th century, Trenton, NJ, stamped twice ''J.F'' within a rectangle, the waved rim above a baluster body with downscrolled handle over a circular gadrooned foot, monogrammed ''AJ'', 4'' H x 4.25'' W x 2.5'' D, 4.5 oz. 4'' H x 4.25'' W x 2.5'' D, 4.5 oz. Literature: A very similar cream jug, with a plain foot, made by John Fitch for Mayor John Lawrence of Burlington, NJ, is illustrated C. M. Williams. ''Silversmiths of New Jersey: 1700-1825'', Philadelphia, 1949, p. 131, fig. 39. Note: John Fitch was born on a Hartford County, Connecticut farm in 1743. As a teen he clerked and apprenticed for two clockmakers and, by 1764, established his own brass shop. After two turbulent years of marriage Fitch deserted his new family in 1769, and migrated to Trenton, New Jersey; cleaning clocks and watches to fund his way. There Fitch briefly apprenticed with silversmith James Wilson, who would soon succumb to alcoholism. Fitch then acquired much of Wilson's equipment and established his own smithy. Business would prove successful enough that he took on a number of journeymen. During the Revolution, Fitch was engaged as an armorer until the 1776 battle of Trenton, when the British army ransacked his shop, forcing his flight to Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Fitch subsequently embarked on several schemes- all of which would end in failure. These involved land speculation in Kentucky; surveying in the Northwest Territory, where he was captured by the Wyandot, remanded to the British, and imprisoned in Canada; and ambitious plans for what would become the first American steam engine-powered ship. Ultimately this last endeavor would prove unprofitable as design flaws and ongoing patent disputes caused Fitch's business to falter. Impoverished and dispirited, Fitch took his own life in 1798. Credit for developing the steamship would later be awarded to Robert Fulton. Though Fitch's account books indicate that his Trenton shop prospered, extant works are scarce. Historian Carl M. Williams recounts in''Silversmiths of New Jersey, 1700-1825'' that there are known only two cream pots, seven tablespoons, two teaspoons and a pair of sugar tongs bearing the mark of John Fitch's firm. Provenance: Property of a Private Collector. Condition: Good overall condition. Surface patina largely rubbed off. Some rubbing to monogram. Foot appears to be cast. Gadrooning somewhat rough and uneven. Some slight tarnishing to handle, commensurate with age. Typical light marks and scratches.< Prev
