CORONATION ROBE CHEST. EARLY 19TH CENTURY. Apainted metal chest with a brass nameplate that reads: The Right Hon’ble Earl Amherst. Coronation Robes. The chest has a worn painted surface and painted interior with flaking paint. There is a brass plate in the interior for Wilkinson & Son Tailors and Robe Makers London. The chest is on a fitted iron stand. The chest is 7" by 15" with stand 41 1/4" by 18 1/2". The surface shows some surface rust, pitting, and flaking in interior. The chest was possibly owned by William Pitt Amherst, 1st Earl Amherst, GCH, PC, 1773-1857, Governor General of India. The chest may have been used for the coronation of King William IV in 1831. Wilkinson and Son are said to have specialized in coronation robes and diplomatic attire for every coronation from William IV to George VI.

SILVER. GEORGE III SIGNED ENGLISH SILVER EPERGNE. George III English silver epergne with (4) arms and a central footed body decorated throughout with foliate form swags, leaf borders, and set atop (4) paw feet accented by splayed leaves. Central acorn finial. With cut crystal bowls set atop each arm and a larger oval form cut crystal bowl centrally located. London, maker's mark most surely representing William Pitts, date letter of 1799, and a duty mark of George III (1786-1821). Total approx. weight of epergne is 56.14 troy oz (gross) excluding cut crystal bowls. From a Long Island, NY estate. Dimensions: epergne measures approx. 24" w x 22" d x 10.75" h including glass inserts. Condition: Good, with light surface scratches and minor dings/dents. Some fleabites, edge chips, and abrasions to cut crystal surrounds. The openwork surround of one arm needs to be resoldered - (2) breaks.

Note: Once thought to be by Thomas Gainsborough, this portrait was attributed to Gainsborough Dupont from photographs in 1981 by Sir Ellis Waterhouse. In his written opinion of the work, Sir Waterhouse notes that the treatment of the ruff and the tassel are characteristic of Dupont and not Gainsborough. He also notes that the original Gainsborough portrait of William Pitt is in the collection of the Art Gallery of Havana, bequeathed by Oscar Cintas. Dupont painted another portrait of Pitt which was offered at auction at Christie's, NY, 25 May 1999, Lot 83.

1766 WILLIAM PITT TOKEN HALF PENNY PCGS AU53One 1766 William Pitt half penny token featuring a left facing portrait of William Pitt, a British ally of the Colonial Americans and opponent of the Stamp Act. His portrait on the obverse is surrounded by "THE RESTORER OF ∑ COMMERCE 1766 NO STAMPS" and on the reverse there is a ship surrounded by "THANKS ∑ TO ∑ THE ∑ FRIENDS ∑ OF ∑ LIBERTY ∑ AND ∑ TRADE ∑ AMERICA." Graded by PCGS as AU53 indicating a slight flatness and loss of luster on the high points of the design but some of the luster remains.

(22.9 x 35.6 cm.), Provenance: Private Collection, Kingsport, Tennessee; Note: The drawing with the inscription, "Mr. Pitt angelified!" likely refers to the Prime Minister, William Pitt, who was in office during the same period.
