In a career lasting over 60 years, he served for 12 years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. A GROUP OF SEVEN ANGLO-AUSTRIAN CARVED MEERSCHAUM PIPES...A GROUP OF SEVEN ANGLO-AUSTRIAN CARVED MEERSCHAUM PIPES, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY, each cased and comprising a finely detailed portrait bust of William Ewart Gladstone (19th century Liberal Prime Minister of Great Britain) within original carved wood case, height: 3", length: 3 1/4"; one of Edward VII with an amber bakelite stem and original velvet lined case, height: 2 1/2", length: 5 3/4"; one representing Queen Alexandra (Edward VII's Queen Consort) wearing tiara and jewelry, with a dark red bakelite stem and original velvet lined case gilt stamped oval "SCB," height: 2 1/2", length: 5"; a portrait pipe of early 20th century English politician wearing a tie and ending with an amber bakelite stem, interior bowl marked "7 1/2," including velvet lined case marked with oval label "CHARATAN'S MAKE./LONDON ENGLAND," height: 2 3/4", length: 6"; a tinted meerschaum portrait pipe of a gentleman with mustache and mutton chops facial hair before a silvered copper band connecting a carved horn stem, within a modern conforming case, height: 2 1/2", length: 5 1/4"; a portrait pipe depicting a bearded man wearing a casual hat, above a short amber stem connected by a silver band engraved "C.M / SILVER," within original velvet lined case, height: 2 1/4", length: 4 1/2"; a portrait pipe of a young smiling beauty wearing a large brimmed hat with plume ending with an amber stem, within original velvet lined case gilt stamped "HFB / Finest Quality," height: 2 1/4", length: 5 1/2".
Condition:
Each in good shape for meerschaum pipes of this age including but not limited to chips, cracks, color variations due to age and use, six bowls are blackened in varying degrees from heavy long term use to light short term use. designed by Richard Lunn and painted by Count Holtzendorf and James Rouse with a central panel of figures on a Derbyshire moor in etched gilt border, the intense cobalt ground reserved with three oval medallions of flowers alternating with 'jewelled' tablets with the raised gilt initials WEG, in gilt rim, 24cm diam, printed mark, inscription DESIGNED AND MANUFACTURED BY THE DERBY CROWN PORCELAIN CO LIMITED FOR PRESENTATION TO THE RT HONLE W E GLADSTONE MP BY THE LIBERAL WORKING MEN OF DERBY 1883 and PODR mark for 5 December 1883 in red, further inscribed by Rouse Flowers by J Rouse Snr/Derwent Edge Peak/Duplicate, 1883
One of a very small number of duplicate plates, extra to the twenty six piece service.
Count Holtzendorf was sent on several occasions into the Derbyshire countryside purposely to make sketches for use only on the Gladstone Service. The fine oval miniature flower paintings were executed by James Rouse, Senior. The service was presented to Gladstone in the Library of Hawarden Castle by a delegation from Derby on Saturday, 22nd December 1883.
