LOT NOTES
Swiss born Theophile Alexandre Steinlen was both a prolific lithographer and painter. Active during the end of the 19th century, Steilen illustrated materials for the Le Chat Noir, a bohemian night club which introduced him to the left wing group of avant garde artists including Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Louis Anquetin, Adolphe Willette, and Félix Vallotton. Well known for his anti- bourgeois and anarchist politics himself, Steinlen’s portrait of Maxim Gorky exhibits reverence for his fellow political activist. Gorky, a proponent of Marxist social- democracy, was an fervent advocate for Russia's social, political, and cultural transformation. However, the Nobel Prize in Literature nominee’s clashes with Lenin and the repressive attitudes in Russia resulted in a nearly twenty year stint in exile in Italy from 1906 to 1913 and from 1922 to 1932.
CONDITION
Unframed, the work appears in good original condition. Minor wear to the corners, fine tear to the upper left corner. The right side perimeter is curled slightly.
