BRASS MODEL OF THE BELL ROCK
BRASS MODEL OF THE BELL ROCK LIGHTHOUSE
CIRCA 1900 on a rectangular base, unmarked24.2cm high, 10.8cm wide, 16.5cm deepProvenance: Stevenson CollectionThe Bell Rock lighthouse, engineered by Robert Stevenson, was built between 1807 and 1810. The masonry work was to such a high standard that it has not been replaced for over 200 years. It lies in a treacherous stretch of the North Sea, twelve miles east of Dundee. The lighthouse was built on a rock known as the Bell Rock (or Inchcape). According to legend the rock got its name because, in the 14th century, the Abbot of Arbroath had a warning bell installed on the rock, which floating debris, the winds and the sea would act upon to toll the bell and warn mariners of this approaching danger. Soon after installation the bell was carried off by Dutch pirates. The lighthouse had the first revolving light in Scotland. It was de-manned in 1988 and from then it has been remotely monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board headquarters at 84 George Street, Edinburgh. It is still an active lighthouse today. Because of the engineering challenges that were overcome to build the lighthouse, it has been described as one of the Seven Wonders of the Industrial World.

JAMES WOODFILL / FREIGHT HOUSE
JAMES WOODFILL / FREIGHT HOUSE PROTOTYPE (1997)James Woodfill
(American, 20th/21st c.)
Signal Series prototype for Freight House, circa 1997
Mixed media sculpture with motor and flashing bulbs
78" x 40" x 24"
A steel framework with a five by five grid of flashing light bulbs, combined with an auditory component. The multi-sensory prototype was imagined as part of Woodfill's monumental light sculpture designs renovating Kansas City's historic Freight House. The Freight House, a notable former railroad building, was transformed in the latter half of the 1990s into facilities for Jack Stack Barbeque, Lidia's, and Grunauer. Woodfill's Signals are a uniquely varied category of his mechanical works that incorporate light and sound elements.
"Woodfill's eccentric light bulb sculptures give off a scratchy ersatz Latin beat, a great deal of ozone, and some of the most odd reaching and grasping of any mechanical contrivances this reviewer has yet seen... Some pieces whirr through the air on long cords, propelled by fans, others boast rows of blinking colored lights which hypnotize like warning signs at the edge of the highway. Somehow, among all this noisy, low-tech sparking, Woodfill had hit upon a combination that pushes the buttons of some of our profoundest human emotions: our childish fascination with things that move and blink with our fear of the automaton and the living dead" (Peter Von Ziegesar, New Art Examiner, 1992).
Literature for this work : Thorson, Alice. "Let There Be More Light," Kansas City Star, June 30, 1997. (Photographed)
Condition
Good condition. Fully working order, including all visual and auditory components. Some oxidation and abrasions to the steel face. The front of the base is bent.

MOCHE WOOD EARSPOOL W/ SHELL,
MOCHE WOOD EARSPOOL W/ SHELL, NACRE, & TURQUOISEPre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, ca. 100 to 500 CE. A lovely and large shell and wood earspool displaying a discoid form and inlaid with delicate carved nacre (mother of pearl) and Spondylus shells. The face features an inlaid design of a central bird in profile surrounded by 4 rectangular shells in a starburst motif, as well as ovoid and circular shell inlays arranged in symmetrical patterns. The ancient avian centerpiece is made of nacre with turquoise stone eyes. The verso is left bare. Earspools such as this were commissioned by a powerful lord who wanted to display his prestige and animal attributes. Size: 2.125" in diameter (5.4 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Spondylus shells have been revered by Andean peoples since the Pre-Columbian era. In addition to being featured in their artwork and used as currency, Spondylus pieces served as sacred offerings to Pachamama, the earth/time mother, a version of Mother Nature. The Spondylus shell carries numerous symbolic meanings. A symbol of fertility and elite social status, it was also believed to be an omen of rain, warning the indigenous of El Nino. In fact, the Spondylus shell only appears when the water becomes warmer during December - the time of the El Nino current - immediately before the rainy season.

AZTEC MASK MOON GODDESS
AZTEC MASK MOON GODDESS COYOLXAUHQUI W/ MONTEZUMA GLYPH...Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Aztec Empire, ca. 16th century CE. Wow! An extraordinarily rare greenstone mask of the Aztec moon goddess Coyolxauhqui with an incised name glyph of the ruler Moctezuma Xocoyotzin (c. 1466-1520), also known as Moctezuma II or Montezuma, on the verso. The glyph consists of 3 ornaments - the royal diadem, the nose plug, and the ear plug - all on and around a head of hair with a speech scroll. Alternatively, Coyolxauhqui, whose name translates to "painted with bells," is depicted traditionally with eyes closed and wearing a feathered headdress as reliefs of bells adorn her face. As Coyolxauhqui revolted against her mother, the earth goddess Coatlicue, and was subsequently beheaded by her brother Huitzilopochtli, the Sun god and patron deity of the Aztecs, she began to represent the vanquished enemy and served as a warning to those who challenged the Aztecs. The inclusion of Montezuma II's name glyph on the verso may have conveyed the message that the enemies of the Aztecs should especially fear their ruler. Size: 10.6" W x 7.8" H (26.9 cm x 19.8 cm)
Coyolxauhqui was the daughter of the earth goddess, Coatlicue, and the leader of her bothers, the Centzon Huitznahuas or "400 Huiztnaua." When Coatlicue's children learned she was pregnant, they believed she had dishonored them and Coyolxauhqui led a revolt against her. Amidst the attack, Huitzilopochtli, the Sun God and patron deity of the Mexica, was born fully armed and slayed his four hundred siblings, including Coyolxauhqui, who he beheaded. This battle signified the cosmological struggle between the moon and the sun, and also had political overtones, as Coyolxauhqui represented the vanquished enemy and served as a warning to those who challenged the Aztecs. Some authors have also written that Huitzilopochtli tossed Coyolxauhqui's head into the sky where it became the Moon, so that his mother would be comforted in seeing her daughter in the sky every night, and that her scattered brothers became the Southern Star deities.
According to the Denver Art Museum, "Moctezuma II or Moctezuma Xocoyotzin (c. 1466-1520), commonly known as Montezuma, is a contested figure in the historical record. He was the leader (tlatoani) of the Mexica Empire, centered in Tenochtitlan. Under Moctezuma, the Empire reached its greatest size. He was in power when Cortes and his band of soldiers arrived from the Yucatan peninsula in 1519. The conquistador eventually took Moctezuma hostage and he died shortly thereafter."
The Spaniards wrote of the Aztecs believing that stone quarried to be carved had magical properties and was alive, able to speak and prophecy. Aztec stone sculpture is a culmination of centuries of stone carving in Mesoamerica, and, using fragile volcanic stone and sturdy greenstone, they were able to create remarkably detailed artworks. Greenstone, like this example, was considered more valuable than gold by the Aztecs. By law, only nobility could wear jade and greenstones as they were highly symbolic: their green color was associated with the life-giving power of water and unripened crops. For this reason, they were often used in the performance of rituals.
Similar examples can be found at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology, under object number 28-40-20/C10108 and at the National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City.
A copy of a technical examination from Frank Preusser & Associates done on June 16th, 2001 will accompany this piece. The certificate states that the methods of manufacture and the damage and weathering patterns are consistent with the object's assumed time and place of origin and very strongly support its archeological origin.

ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE OINOCHOE W/
ATTIC BLACK-FIGURE OINOCHOE W/ ACHILLES, EX-CHRISTIE'SAncient Greece, Athens (Attic), ca. 530 BCE. Finely decorated via the black-figure technique with incised and added fugitive red painted details, a beautiful trefoil oinochoe featuring the scene of a warrior - perhaps Achilles - readying himself for battle; the nude figure bending over to put on his greaves as a high-crested Corinthian helmet rests at his feet and a draped woman, possibly Achille's mother Thetis, and a young man stand to either side. Greaves and ankle guards were hammered from sheet bronze and retained considerable tensile strength, allowing them to be snapped onto the raised leg, as seen here. The woman watches while holding the warrior's spear and shield, serving as an attendant. Behind him, the nude youth holds another spear, likely waiting to arm himself as well. A band of tongues decorates the area above, just below the trefoil spout of the vessel. Though the warrior's armor indicates he may be a hoplite, this may also be a representation of the arming of Achilles by his mother Thetis. Size: 4.2" Diameter x 7.4" H (10.7 cm x 18.8 cm)
According to Homer's Iliad, during the last year of the Trojan war, Patroclus, Achilles’s beloved friend, dons Achilles' armor in order to scare the Trojans back from the beaches of Greece. He succeeds in doing so but is killed by Hector and stripped of the armor in the process, leaving Achilles grief-stricken and armorless. Thetis comes to comfort her son and, after seeing his deep despair, persuades Hephaestus, the god of blacksmiths and craftsmen, to forge him new armor. The god accepts and makes a shield, a breastplate, a helmet, and greaves, which Thetis delivers to Achilles, as seen in this example. Enraged, Achilles then returns to battle with the sole aim of avenging Patroclus’ death by killing Hector, despite a warning that doing so would cost him his life. After defeating Hector, Achilles drags his corpse by the heels behind his chariot.
Athens mandated that all 18- to 20-year-olds participate in military service; however, during times of war, all male citizens through the age of 60 could be asked to serve. Hoplites carried a large, round, bronze-faced shield known as a hoplon in one hand, as seen in this example, and, in the other, an eight-foot-long wooden spear with a leaf-shaped iron head and a bronze butt spike. The butt spike was known as a sauroter, a "lizard killer," and, if the spear was broken, could be used as a weapon on the remaining end. It could also be used to stand the spear in soft ground or as a digging tool.
Scenes of warriors preparing for battle were quite popular in Ancient Greece and can be found on vessels in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (06.1021.164a, b), the Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge University (GR.6.1917), the Louvre (E813), Rijksmuseum van Oudheden (PC60), and the Athens Agora Museum (P24360).

PABLO PICASSO, (SPANISH, 1881-1973), PARA ESTHER, 1958, CRAYON, 8 X 11 IN.PABLO PICASSO (Spanish, 1881-1973) Para Esther 1958, crayon on paper signed and dated Picasso 14.4.58 along lower edge on a blank front page of the book "The Private World of Pablo Picasso" 8 x 11 in. 1958, crayon on paper Dimensions: 8 x 11 in. Provenance: Provenance: The artist; a gift to Esther Watson; by descent in her family to the present owner. This charming drawing was sent with love from Picasso, his wife Jacqueline, and their friend photojournalist David Douglas Duncan to Duncan's aunt Esther. Duncan cabled his aunt, who had recently been unwell, warning her that a "wonderful surprise" was en route to her in America. Some time later, Esther received a copy of Duncan's photo book "The Private World of Pablo Picasso," with notes from Jacqueline and Duncan on the title page, and a special drawing from Picasso on page 6. Esther saved a copy of the letter she sent Picasso in reply, writing, in part, "It meant so much to me that the great artist Picasso would take the time to lovingly decorate and autograph a page in Dave's book just for me; and that in doing so he was sending a thought for my return to health; all this so overwhelmed me that I have no words adequate to express my thanks and gratitude. The flowers that came to me while at the hospital are now only a treasured memory, but your bouquet will stay with me to give me pleasure for the remainder of my life." Indeed, these flowers continued to bring Esther great joy for the remainder of her life, and have been lovingly cared for by her family in the years since her passing. This work is accompanied by the cable from David Douglas Duncan to Esther warning her of the "wonderful surprise," Esther's copy of the letter she sent to Picasso, and a postcard sent by Picasso and Jacquleine to Esther in reply to her letter. Condition: Residue from a paperclip along upper edge, to right of "A"; edges of sheet slightly toned.
