One other Philadelphia desk and bookcase with a bust of Milton is known and currently resides in an important private Pennsylvania collection. Alan Miller assisted with the cataloging of this lot. Condition:
Chips to corners of cornice. A couple repaired cracks to cornice. Upper door panels with newer interior liners, but they do appear to be original. Brasses replaced. Feet are period but probably associated with case. Some alterations to backboards of lower section.

This chest is in a rare state of preservation with an impeccable provenance, 28" h., 42 1/2" w. Illustrated: Wallace Nutting, Furniture Treasury , Vol I, fig. 43 and Furniture of the Pilgrim Century , no. 60. Exhibited: Boston Museum of Fine Arts, 1971-72. Nail holes to front of lid from being nailed to case for travel. A couple losses to applied ornament. Pulls probably old replacements.
