ONE OF THE GREAT RARITIES OF THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE (LITERATURE AND POETRY.) THURMAN, WALLACE, Editor. Harlem; a Forum of Negro Life. Volume 1, Number 1, November, 1928 (one of only two issues published). Cover and full page illustration by Aaron Douglas with additional full-page illustrations by Richard Bruce and Leon Noyes. Tall 4to, original pictorial orange wrappers; a couple of tiny nicks and some very light general wear. New York: Harlem Bookshop, 1928
Containing articles by a who''s who of the Harlem literary scene, "Harlem" was the brainchild of Wallace Thurman (1902-1934) who, two years earlier had launched "Fire," another literary magazine that sadly lasted for only one issue. The explanation usually given for the brief life of "Fire" was that it was too revolutionary and modern, and that the old guard black literati did not give it their support. But "Harlem" on the other hand, which included articles by well-respected, "old-guard" African-American writers such as Alain Locke and Walter White, fared no better. "Harlem" only lasted for two issues. Contributors to this issue include: Alain Locke, Langston Hughes, Aaron Douglas, Walter White, Georgia Douglas Johnson, Effie Lee Newsome, Mae Cowdery, Helene Johnson, Alice Dunbar Nelson, George W. Little, Theophilus Lewis, and Allison Davis. Thurman, who had edited both magazines, finally broke out with his first novel "Blacker the Berry" and a play "Harlem," both appearing in 1929.

c 1880 Battle of Bunker Hill, Color Lithograph After John Trumbull Ch. Near Mint: American Revolution. Gorgeous Color Lithograph of the "Battle of Bunker Hill" Depicting The Death of General Warren by Kurz & Allison. c. 1880, "Battle of Bunker Hill. " Color Lithograph After the original Painting by John Trumbull, Depicting The Death of General Warren, Framed, Choice Near Mint. This beautiful large Color Lithograph print was published by Kurz & Allison of Chicago and has wonderful eye appeal. The historic image measures about 17. 5" x 25", matted and framed to an overall size of 26. 75" x 33". After the famous painting by American artist John Trumbull. This depiction presents in remarkable detail in strong rich colors, the carnage of the Battle of Bunker Hill on June 17, 1775, with British warships firing their cannons in the background. At front right, a Black soldier is part of the battle scene. He was a Slave named Prince Estabrook who had volunteered to fight, having been voted into the Lexington, Massachusetts Militia company. Doctor Joseph Warren is shown as he lies mortally wounded, the bayonet of a British soldier being deflected by the hand of Colonel John Chester as he attempts to aide Dr. Warren. John Chester, a Connecticut captain, seeing an entire company in retreat, ordered his company to aim muskets at that company to halt its retreat; they turned about and headed back to the battlefield. The text printed under the image at lower left reads: "June 17th, 1775. - Howe, Com. British, Loss: 1054. (Maj. Pitcain Kd. ) Prescott, Com. Americans, Loss: 450 (Gen. Warren Kd. ). Text at lower right reads: "Kurz & Allison, Art Publishers, 76 & 78 Wabash Ave. , Chicago, U. S. A. " Overall, one of the very finest and most attractive examples of any rendition of the "Battle of Bunker Hill" we have seen and offered, and is an outstanding display piece. By Derek W. Beck:. . Dr. Joseph Warren was one of the most important and influential Revolutionary War heroes, once more famous than George Washington, now largely forgotten given his untimely death in the American retreat from the Battle of Bunker Hill in 1775. . Ever since, historians have debated the contemporary stories of the death of Warren, whether he was shot in the face as he valiantly rallied some retreating Yankees to a final volley against the oncoming British, or whether he was shot in the back of the head as he ran from the field. At last we have the answer. . Following the Battle of Bunker Hill, Warren was buried on the field of battle, which remained under the control of the British until their forced Evacuation of Boston, March 17, 1776. . It was on this date, 235 years ago, April 4, 1776, that Dr. Warren's burial spot was discovered by two of his brothers, Ebenezer Warren and Dr. John Warren, along with Paul Revere. Though Paul Revere was known as a silversmith, his trade had its uses in dentistry as well. Joseph Warren's unborn nephew would decades later specify that the body was recognized "from the circumstance that the left upper cuspidatus, or eye-tooth, had been secured in its place by a golden wire. "Whether the eye-tooth was the false tooth, or whether the false tooth was secured to it by the wire, is unclear. Revere's use of dentistry to help identify Warren's remains is oft cited as the first known use of dental forensics. . metal wire placed by Revere, barely visible between the eye-tooth and the first pre-molar in the frontal view. It is upon examination of these copies that the particulars of Warren's death become apparent. The photos reveal a musket-ball sized hole just between the left nostril and left eye on Warren's left side. . There is a much larger exit wound at the back of the skull's base, just right of center when looking at it from behind. This exit wound must have been the one Dr. John Mason Warren described as "crumbling at the margin. " Due to the low muzzle velocity of the musket, as evidenced by their extremely limited range, one can deduce that in order for a ball to pass entirely through the skull, the fatal shot was fired from close range. . With these long-lost photos, we now have visual proof to answer the particulars of the fatal shot. Dr. Joseph Warren was shot in the face, looking at his assailant, and given the exit wound, he undoubtedly died instantly. He made no final speeches. He was not shot in the back of the head while retreating. . Whether he rallied a few steadfast Yanks to give a final volley into the oncoming British is unknown, but Dr. Warren certainly died facing the swarm of redcoats as they poured over the Breed's Hill redoubt toward him.

Attributed to Theodore Sydney Moïse (Charleston/ Natchitoches 1806-1883), "Lieutenant-Colonel William Miller Owen, C. S. A. (1834-1893)", c. 1865/67, oil on canvas, unsigned, 30 in. x 24 in., in original oval giltwood frame. $25000/35000 Provenance: By descent to the present owners. Note: This striking portrait of a returning war hero must have been painted within a year or two after Miller Owen's return to New Orleans in June 1865. His Petersburg wound of the preceding August is prominently included, so the portrait cannot date before its healing; but that city was already being evacuated, as he hourly defended its trenches after returning from his three weeks' recuperation, through April 1865; and he made only a short stopover in a damaged Richmond, as well as a flying visit of a few days to New York, before returning South. During those intervening months he was (as he put it) "emphatically and completely 'busted'," and certainly could not have afforded a fine portrait from an artist of this eminence; indeed, he was obliged to devote his first few months back in New Orleans to re-establishing himself on a sound financial footing, before he and his brother opened the partnership they formed with General Longstreet in the last weeks of 1865. Miller Owen's success in that endeavor, however, was painfully short-lived: within two years Longstreet had resigned from their firm, and in fact was obliged shortly afterward to bail out his friend by purchasing Owen's entire houseful of furnishings. It is therefore clear for financial reasons, as well as from the sitter's conspicuous youthfulness in this portrait, that he must have commissioned it as soon as he could after his return to New Orleans. He was aged 31 1/2 on his return to Louisiana, and cannot be much older than 33 in this image. During those years the most prominent artist painting in Louisiana in this style was T. S. Moïse, who had been (and was still loosely) associated with Trevor Thomas Fowler (1800-1868); this painting is characteristic of both their styles, but especially of Moïse's. Moreover, two of Moïse's best portraits of this period are ovals of exactly this same size, representing the sister of Owen's wife, Harriet Sophia Zacharie, and her husband, Major Thomas Sydenham Hardee—with whose uncle, Gen. W. J. Hardee, Miller Owen had served on Lee's staff. Through both family as well as professional connections he was therefore in a familiar relationship with Moïse, and we may thus confidently conclude that this painting is a work by that artist of 1865/1867. General William Miller Owen (having held that rank in the Louisiana National Guard, 1880-1888) died in New Orleans of tuberculosis on his 59th birthday, 10 January 1893. He had been married in 1867 to his second cousin, Caroline Amanda Zacharie; he was survived by her, as well as by their two sons, Allison Owen II, Commander of the Washington Artillery, and Edmund Pendleton Owen (a bachelor), as well as by his brother Ned in New York, and one of their sisters in Ohio. His important personal archive of Civil War papers and books, and Louisiana documents (dating back to 1818, when members of his family first acquired property in Iberville Parish) are also offered in this sale.
