- PAIR OF NUREMBERG CHRONICLE WOODCUTS,
PAIR OF NUREMBERG CHRONICLE WOODCUTS, 1493 A pair of woodcuts from The Nuremberg Chronicle, the first secular published book. It tells the history of the earth through seven "ages." The first one shows the recto LXVI, this piece shows a fictitious view of the visionary temple of Ezekiel. It includes the first figure of the temple edifice, a second similar figure, and two figures showing the ornamentation of the gate. The verso LXVI shows the ground view of the posterior gate, elevation of the east gate and appendages, and elevation of the north edifice. The second page is from Folio LI and show images of the city of Treviso, near Venice. Both pages are double sided as they were removed from a book. These pieces most likely came from two separate books as there is some slight size difference in the two sheets. There are two editions of the book, the first in Latin and the second in German. Although many towns and cities in Europe and the Near East are illustrated in the book, 49 of them were printed with only 14 different woodblocks. Hartmann Schedel; Anton Koberger published in Nuremberg by Anton Koberger in 1493.
- ARTHUR TURNBULL HILL (AMERICAN, 1868-1929)
ARTHUR TURNBULL HILL (AMERICAN, 1868-1929) "SUNSET EAST HAMPTON" Oil on canvas. Signed 'Arthur Turnbull Hill' (lower center left). Signed and titled on stretcher.
Catalogue Note: American painters in the final decades of the 19th century moved steadily into the transition heralded by George Inness from the heroic, nationalistic landscape into a phase more personally visionary. Their painting focused less on the exact replication of nature than on scenery, as a spiritual manifestation and it tended toward impressions and depictions of personal experience. Landscape painting tends to reflect changes of social and industrial growth, and was in one way escapist but the combination laid the foundation for a new realism.
By the end of the 19th century landscape painting had come full circle and was burgeoning with new perspectives. The great 19th century artist, George Inness, was profoundly responsible for influencing the painters who where to follow him upon his contact with the Barbizon school. Originally, the work of Cole and Durand and Old Masters prints were his true models and taking hikes in the wild where he chose pastoral scenes close to home. A change took hold after a trip that Inness took to Europe, particularly France, where he came under the influence of the Barbizon School. Theodore Rousseau, Charles Daubigny and Camille Corot became his new idols and he decided to abandon the meticulous naturalism of the Hudson River School in favor of his own subjective expression of nature. He no longer portrayed what he saw literally, but tried to project his own vision into his paintings. Inness was seeking to capture the mood of the landscape through a lyrical and painterly style, his own personal Impressionism, for which he became famous. Inness also filled his canvases with the poetic atmosphere in the manner of Turner, whose work had impressed him and he combined this luminist approach with a pastoral quality derived from the Barbizon painters of France.

LOUIS BOSA (AMERICAN, 1905-1981) NEW YORK CITY STREET S...Louis Bosa (American, 1905-1981) New York City Street Scenes, 1930 oil on board one signed and dated 1930 lower right 9 in. h. x 7 in. w., each 12 1/2 in. h. x 10 1/4 in. w., with identical frames New York City, possibly 3rd Avenue Born in Codroipo, a small village only a few miles from Venice, Italy in 1905, the son of a stonemason. Bosa emigrated to the U.S. at age 18 after studies at the Accademia della Belle Arti in Venice and became an American citizen. He then studied under John Sloan, of the Ashcan School, at the Art Students League in New York. A distinguished painter, Louis Bosa's work has been likened to that of artists ranging from Pieter Breughel the Elder to John Sloan and the Ashcan School. Being an acute observer of the human condition, Bosa's paintings, which are primarily oil on canvas, often focus on people and street scenes from his native Italy. Bosa was known to have followed his subjects around, making many sketches and mental notes, and combined his observations in the final work to create visionary, fantastical images. The subjects of his paintings are highly stylized and expressionistic, and border on caricature. "People are so funny at times they are sad," he said: The people in his paintings are accessible and seem to portray human emotion and everyday life, conquering such concepts as mortality, humility and sometimes futility. His work often reveals comedy in the midst of tragedy. Many of his paintings include whimsical images of nuns riding bicycles and similar authority figures engaged in mundane activities. He traveled extensively through Europe and often returned to his native Italy. Bosa painted for the Works Progress Administration and the Whitney Museum. He taught at the Cleveland Institute of Art, the New York Art Students League, the Parsons School of Design, Syracuse University, and the University of Notre Dame at South Bend, Indiana. His paintings and watercolors are on display at many well-known art studios and museums across the United States such as: The Metropolitan Museum of Art - New York The Whitney Museum - New York The Philadelphia Museum - Pennsylvania The Worcester Museum - Massachusetts The Springfield Museum - Massachusetts The Toronto Art Museum - Canada Notre Dame University Museum The Butler Museum - Ohio The Columbus Museum of Arts and Crafts - Ohio The University of Illinois - Illinois The Montclair Museum - New Jersey The James A. PAUL JENKINS PARIS 1962 PHENOMENAPaul Jenkins (1923-2012, New York/France), abstract painting in blue, red, gold and brown on white ground, titled and dated en verso úPhenomena Cut Heather, Paris 1962î. Signed lower left in white paint, úPaul Jenkinsî. 23 3/4" H x 28 3/4" W sight, 26" H x 31" W in narrow metallic frame. Biography (courtesy Askart): Abstract Expressionist Paul Jenkins began studying art at the Kansas City Art Institute in his hometown when he was only 13. He served in the U.S. Naval Air Corps during World War II, then studied in New York at the Art Students League under Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Morris Cantor. During this time he also met Jackson Pollack and befriended Mark Rothko. In 1953, he went to Paris where he had his first one-man show. He studied there at the American Artists Center where he experimented with pouring paint on canvas in various thicknesses to create a sense of dynamism in the process itself. Jenkins was heavily influenced by the theories of Jung and by the visionary imagery of Odilon Redon and Gustave Moreau, and described himself as an "abstract phenomenist." From the 1960s on, all his paintings' titles began with the word "Phenomena." Provenance: Private Collection of a Retired Sculptor and Art Patron, Middle Tennessee.
