Portrait of a scholar seated at a slant top desk with lamp, floorstanding globe; he is wearing the distinctive fur trimmed hat (Spodik) of the Hassidim Polish Orhodox Jew, scrutinizing a large tome with other books and a scroll in the foreground on a carpet covered round table. In a modern black ogee frame with earlier gilt name tag (having the variance of 'Gerard' spelling of his first name. OS: 14 1/2" x 12 1/2", SS: 9" x 7", repaired centerline vertical crack, some retouching, revarnished.
