Other Notes: Benjamin Cogswell and Edward Harrison were both involved in gunmaking before forming their partnership in 1863, when the firm was renamed Cogswell & Harrison. In 1874 Edgar Harrison joined the firm and in 1883 it moved to 226 Strand. In 1884 they acquired a small 'factory' and the Blagdon Shooting Ground. In 1887 the firm had a factory in Harrow including a test range, where they offered live pigeon and starling shooting, on which substantial betting took place. In 1888 the firm patented a boxlock ejector (Nos. 11550 and 18157) called the 'Avant Tout'; this was further modified by patent No. 13591 of 1889. On 15 June 1893 Horatio F. Phillips patented a lightweight shotgun which fired a 12-bore cartridge into a barrel that was reduced to 20-bore dimensions in the first third of its length. He named this the 'Vena Contracta'. In 1894 the Harrow factory burned down and manufacturing moved to Victoria. In 1897 the firm became a limited liability company and moved to 141 New Bond Street and in 1901 a shop was opened in Paris. Then, in 1911, a joint venture was entered into with the Schultze Co to establish Cogschultze Ammunition & Powder Company Ltd. In 1918 the shop at 141 New Bond Street was closed and a new shop opened at 168 Piccadilly, but business was slow and remained so for two or three years. In 1919 a depot was opened in Exeter at 94 Queen Street.Tragically, in a repeat of history, in 1922 the factory in Gillingham Street burned down and all the stock, machinery, guns in for repair and some of the records were lost. This was a major blow at a difficult time. Very few guns were sold in the second half of the 1920s and in 1928, due to lack of business, the Strand shop was sold, and the company operated only from Piccadilly. In 1931 the shop in Paris closed. By 1932 the situation was dire, Edgar Harrison put the company into voluntary liquidation and a new company was formed. In 1933, having lost the skilled staff in Feltham, Edgar opened a factory in Birmingham but this closed soon after. For the duration of WW2 the company was involved in gun repairs and spares, and making Sten gun parts. Business was poor after WW2 and in around 1958, Interarmco (UK) bought a controlling interest in the company and opened a new factory at Cannon Works, Acton. By 1963 the company was not doing well and John Peskett, Ted Holden and others bought the name, goodwill and retail business of Cogswell & Harrison back from Interarmco but in 1982 the company ceased trading and Farlows of Pall Mall bought the name, goodwill and records, which were licensed to J. Roberts & Son from 1984 to 1989 but then reverted to Farlows. In 1993 Cogswell & Harrison (Gunmakers) Ltd was formed by the new owners. Professor Mike Cooley owns the company and Alan Crewe (ex Purdey) is Director of Gunmaking.

STEUBEN CRYSTAL PHEASANTDESCRIPTION: Steuben crystal pheasant sculpture. Pressed and cut Lead Glass Cast as a solid block in the shape of a sitting pheasant with a flat base and no visible feet. Head, breast, wings and long tail are wheel-cut and polished with grooves simulating feathers. Rockwell Gallery, N.Y. label attached. Reference: Fig. 6504, p.236 Paul V. Gardner. Shown in the 1932 catalog at p. 11 for $35. Shown p. 164 of Objects of Desire: The Art of Frederick Carder by Alan Shovers. Shown at p. 281 of Steuben Glass An American Tradition in Crystal by Mary Jane Madigan. Shown as a stock piece. Shown as 1932 with design credit to Bolas Manikowski and Frederick Carder. Shown in The Collectors Encyclopedia of American Art Glass by Shuman, page 170. In the Steuben line in 1934. Dimitroff p.75. Pheasant was popular and examples are numerous. For a designer who was said to have disliked cut glass, Carder certainly produced a lot of it. His cut designs of the post-1918 period, in contrast to the 1903-15 group, are bold and unconventional. They are nothing like the designs created by his American competitors.” P. 163 Dimitroff. In faceted pieces Carder used cutting to shape the outline of the glass. See Fig. 2.40, p. 24 of Dimitroff where it is stated: “Relatively few brilliant cut items were designed by Carder at Steuben.” Further, at p. 256 the author states: “Carder’s deep, brilliant cut pieces are just plain rare in any shape or in any color.” In Frederick Carder: Portrait of a Glassmaker by Paul V. Gardner at p.28 the author states: His skilled cutters produced about 200 decorative patterns on elaborate console sets, stately covered jars, monumental centerpieces, and a few table services. Among the rarest cut pieces are an ornamental peacock, pheasant, eagle, and Pegasus, a fanciful concept of the fabled winged horse. “Steuben made many articles in pressed glass--ashtrays; Lincoln and Washington Head plaques with metal bases; eagle, pheasant, gazelle, duck, and pigeon figurines (later cut and polished to remove the mold marks);” p. 178, American Art Nouveau Glass by Albert Christian Revi. Seen at p. 41 of article Carder Steuben Glass by Robert Mueller, in Glass Collectors Digest, Volume XIV, Number 6, April/May 2001. At p. 43, Some of Carder’s most impressive cut engraved work appears on figural animals, such as the pheasant, eagle, and pigeon. These table display sculptures were mold pressed, then hand cut to add details to the design. Shown in 1926 House and Garden ad by Steuben Glass Blown and molded(id) at Steuben Furnaces, Corning, N.Y. AD labeled Precious pieces of Modern Glass hand wrought in the old tradition. Inscription reads The crystal birds are a triumph of glass making art. In Steuben Seventy Years of American glassmaking by Perrot, Gardner and Platt, the authors say p. 55: In addition to the pigeon, cut crystal eagle, pheasant, duck and peacock table ornaments were made. These objects were among the few Carder Steuben pieces in which the basic shape was formed in a mold and the feathers and other details added by the glass cutters after the piece was annealed. In The Complete Cut and Engraved Glass of Corning by Estelle F. Sinclaire and Jane Shadel Spillman, the author’s state at p. 198: Such art objects as the Carder-Steuben birds illustrate another characteristic Carder use of cutting: as texture or background. In the Steuben eagle, cutting reminiscent of the hollow or St. Louis diamonds suggests the texture of feathers. A pair pictured at p. 153, of Encyclopedia of American Cut and Engraved Glass by Albert Christian Revi. At p. 150 author says, “Beautifully cut crystal pheasants were made in pairs as mantel ornaments.” CIRCA: 1903-1932 ORIGIN: USA DIMENSIONS: L: 11.5” W: 3" H: 6.25". Have a similar item to sell? § JOHN DUNCAN FERGUSSON R.B.A. (SCOTTISH 1874-1961) STANDING FEMALE NUDE
Bronze
22cm x 8cm x 7cm (8.675in x 3.125in x 2 75in)
Provenance: Acquired from the artist’s wife, Margaret Morris, via the Fine Art Society, London, by the present owner in 1974
Exhibited: Fine Art Society, London, J. D. Fergusson (1874-1961), 10 September – 4 October 1974, no. 100 (incorrectly catalogued as 'The Patient Woman', 1920)
Literature: Alice Strang et al, J. D. Fergusson, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh 2013, another cast reproduced in colour pl.35
Fergusson is the only one of the four artists known as the Scottish Colourists – along with F. C. B. Cadell, G. L. Hunter and S. J. Peploe – to have worked in three dimensions. Indeed, he made sculpture over some 50 years, with his first created in Paris in 1908 and the last thought to date from about 1955. As Alice Strang has explained: ‘Experiments in terracotta in 1909 and clay in 1913, led to direct carving in stone outdoors during World War One. Carving wood and plaster, which he sometimes cast and coloured, followed. Works were cast in brass and bronze as funds permitted.’ (Alice Strang et al, J. D. Fergusson, National Galleries of Scotland, Edinburgh 2013, p. 21). The importance of this aspect of Fergusson’s oeuvre is clear in the inclusion of sculptures in many of his exhibitions between 1912 and 1948.
Standing Female Nude comes from Fergusson’s most productive period of sculpture-making, the years approximately 1918 to 1922, when he was based in London. It dates from circa 1920 and was cast at a later date. Sheila McGregor has linked this period with a parallel development in Margaret Morris Movement, the system of choreography devised by his wife (Sheila McGregor, A Colourist Abroad: The Art and Life of J. D Fergusson, unpublished manuscript, completed 2000, p.8). Morris and her pupils, whether sitting as models or in motion during lessons, rehearsals and performances, provided a rich source of inspiration for Fergusson.
This work is a powerful depiction of female physicality. It embodies key themes in Fergusson’s sculptural practice: the cropped female form, an interest in non-Western sculpture and a sleek modernism, based on curves and planes with particular attention paid to the breasts, bottom and the base of the spine. It pays testament to the sculptors with whose work Fergusson would have been familiar in pre-war Paris, such as Constantin Brancusi, Alexander Archipenko and Jacob Epstein. Similar concerns were explored in Fergusson’s best-known sculpture, Eástre (Hymn to the Sun) of 1924.
The most significant holding of Fergusson’s sculpture is held at The Fergusson Gallery, Perth, which is the centre of excellence for his and Morris’s work. Other important examples are held in public collections including those of the Tate, Hunterian Art Gallery, Government Art Collection and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum.

Draper depicted Bernstein in 3/4 view, gazing directly at the viewer with his distinguished visage and signature pompadour hairdo, dapperly dressed in a matching brown jacket and tie, beige vest, and white dress shirt. Draper was a great fan of Bernstein's flamboyant conducting style. Size: 30" L x 25" W (76.2 cm x 63.5 cm); 31.375" L x 26.375" W (79.7 cm x 67 cm) framed.
We are especially excited to feature William Draper's portrait of Leonard Bernstein given the release of the film remake of "West Side Story" - scripted by Tony Kushner and directed by the legendary Steven Spielberg. Perfect timing for any fan of this classic musical about love rising above hatred set in New York City during the 1950s, with magical moments capturing the romances between Tony and Maria as well as Bernardo and Anita, in addition to the dramatic rivalry between the Sharks and the Jets; incredible dance scenes, and of course, Leonard Bernstein's unforgettable score which includes "Jet Song", "Something's Coming", "Maria", "Tonight", "America", "Cool", "One Hand, One Heart", "I Feel Pretty", "Somewhere", "Gee, Officer Krupke", and "A Boy Like That"!
Draper became known as the "Dean of American portraitists" and Boston MFA Director Emeritus Peter Rathbone compared Draper's skill to that of master John Singer Sargent. Rathbone, whose portrait Draper also painted stated, "Nature endowed William F. Draper with enough talents to require him to choose among them before embarking on a professional career. Yet to those who know him, it is hard to imagine that any natural bent could rival his personal endowment as a painter of portraits … Draper's painting belongs to the tradition of Sargent. Like Sargent's, his style is fluid with virtuoso brushwork as the identifying characteristic. Like Sargent, the preparation of the painting by Draper is all in the artist's eye. Unlike Sargent's detachment, Draper's understanding and love of people and his appreciations of physical subtleties are happily projected into his work. These traits are the source of the warmth and vitality of his portraiture. They are also the reasons why his portraits are fine likenesses. And it is not too much to say that something of his own vibrant personality is reflected in everything he paints." ("Portraits Period" by Portrait Brokers of America, 1990, p. 46)
William Draper's career spanned seven decades and his subjects included a portrait of John F. Kennedy that hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. based upon an oil sketch for which the president sat in 1962. Draper was actually the only artist who painted JFK from life. Draper showed at Knoedler, the Graham Gallery, Portraits, Inc., the Far Gallery, The Findlay Galleries (New York, NY) and the Robert C. Vose Galleries (Boston, MA). His work has been included in shows at the National Portrait Gallery and the Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington, D.C.), The National Academy of Design (New York, NY), The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, (Boston, MA) the Fogg Art Museum, (one of the Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, MA), the National Gallery, (London), Salon de la Marine (Paris) and in museums in Australia. He also taught at the Art Students League of New York, and received a lifetime achievement award from the Portrait Society of America in 1999.
More on the artist's background: William Franklin Draper was born in Hopedale, Massachusetts on December 24, 1912. A child prodigy, he studied classical piano at Harvard University. He later changed his focus to fine art and studied with Charles Webster Hawthorne and Henry Hensche in Provincetown, Rhode Island. Draper also attended the National Academy of Design in New York and the Cape Cod School of Art in Massachusetts. Then he traveled to Spain and studied with Harry Zimmerman, moved on to France and attended the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. In 1937, he moved to Boston to study sculpture with George Demetrius and also studied with Jon Corbino in beautiful Rockport, Massachusetts. In 1942, Draper joined the Navy and served as a combat artist when stationed on the Aleutian Islands and in the South Pacific. He observed and painted battle scenes on Bougainville, Guam, Saipan, and other locations, as well as genre scenes of soldiers who were not engaged in combat but rather at work and at play. National Geographic magazine reproduced 25 of his war images in four issues in 1944. In 1945, the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. organized a group exhibition of works by five official war artists, including Draper. That same year the Metropolitan Museum of Art included Draper in an exhibition entitled, ''The War Against Japan.'' Draper was also featured in a PBS television show about combat artists entitled, "They Drew Fire" in May of 2000. After the war, Draper opened a studio on Park Avenue in New York City and continued to not only paint, but also play classical and jazz piano.
Provenance: The William F. Draper Collection, New York City, USA, acquired via descent from the late William Franklin Draper (1912-2003), an accomplished American artist whose career spanned seven decades. Known as the "Dean of American Portraiture," William Draper was the only artist to paint President John F. Kennedy from life, and his oeuvre includes marvelous landscapes from his world travels, military paintings as he was one of only seventeen Combat Artists in WWII, and portraits of illustrious individuals.

CIVIL WAR ARCHIVE OF JACOB K. LONAS, KNOXVILLECivil War Archive of Jacob Kimberlin Lonas (earlier spelling Lones), Sergeant/Captain, 4th TN Infantry which later became the 1st TN Cavalry. He was born on July 18, 1842 to Charles and Rebecca Lones, the first of nine children. The Lones' were a prominent Knoxville family that originally moved to the area in the 1770's. Military biography (courtesy: Record Group 94 and Dyer, pp 1636-1637): Lones enlisted in the Union Army on April 1, 1862 at the age of 19. Commissioned Captain by the Governor of Tennessee on February 1, 1864, Lones saw action during the Tullahoma Campaign, Chickamauga, Sparta, East Tennessee Campaign, New Hope Church, Allatoona Hills, Kenesaw Mountain, the Siege of Atlanta, the Raid on Atlanta and West Point Railroad, Franklin, Nashville, Pursuit of Hood, and the expedition into Mississippi. Jacob died on February 7, 1929 and is buried in Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery. Archive includes two tintypes, one of Jacob and one of Jacob as a captain with two members of his company, Jacob's tan colored captain's epaulette, letters, books, and documents spanning from before the Civil War until the 1920's. Notable letters dating from the Civil War include a report from Jacob to Lieutenant Thurman that details how certain members of his command were wounded or killed in combat, dated January 23, 1865, Waterloo, Alabama. Jacob writes "1st Lut John Roberts wounded near Lovejoy Station Ga on the 29th of July and dies at Jonesborou (sic) Ga August 1st 64 of wound" and "Privat (sic) James L Smith killed near Linville Tenn Dec 24th 1864." One letter, dated March 31st 1865 addressed from Lones to Nashville, TN, provides a brief history of the Command of Co C First Regiment Tennessee Cavalry Vols. Another letter, dated March 30th 1864, Knoxville, TN, addressed from F.W. Reith Lt. Col. Commanding to Guards and Prikits (sic) stating "will pass Luiet (sic) Lones through the lines until the 3rd of April." Also included is Lones' copy of the New Testament, New York: American Bible Society, 1846, inscribed "J.K. Lones April 1862" on front page. Tucked into the bible is a handwritten note from R. Lones (probably his mother, Rebecca Lones) with two copies of a list of seven behaviors to uphold as a good Christian. The majority of the Civil War era documents are Quartermaster invoices completed by Jacob, starting 1863 and ending 1866, detailing the receipt and return of supplies. Also included are Muster Rolls and Payroll forms, ca. 1864-1867. Several copies of Jacob's Pension statements, dating from 1862-1925, are present in the archive. Documents pertaining to Jacob's wife, Pauline Lones nee Sharp, and her family are also included in the archive. One letter is dated July 24, 1860, from John Baxter, written by J.M. Fleming, to the Honorable Seth J.W. Lucky Chancellor & C., sitting in Chancery at Knoxville, TN. In the letter Baxter is "humbly complaining" that a few months back he gave Andrew Sharp, the father of Pauline Lones, $5900 with which to purchase a "family of Negroes from one McMahem of Sevier County..." but this deal allegedly did not follow through as planned. The letter specifies amounts paid for expenses related to the slave trade, such as "...$1200...in the purchase of one Negro man..." and "...$30 per month for the labour (sic) of [a] Negro while in their employ." Baxter does state at the end of the letter that Andrew Sharp should not be held responsible for the debt and Baxter asks his Honor for an injunction. Also included are love letters sent to Jacob by Pauline ca. 1870-1890, journal entries/essays by Pauline ca. 1868, several school "rewards" given to Pauline ca. 1861, newspaper clippings, postcards, and wedding invitations received by the couple after they were married on January 31, 1871. A copy of Jacob's will, dated January 14, 1899, is also present. In the will, Jacob appoints his wife as executor and primary benefactor. It describes property he owned in Knoxville, "including a livery stable on Henly (sic) Street South on Clinch Street and bounded by Sharp on the North and running back 130 feet, to an Alley being the same property, purchased from B.P. Flenniken..." Another notable letter from the archive is dated August 7, 1918, and was written by Sgt. L.L. Lones to Jacob K. Lones, his uncle, addressed "Some where is France." Responding to a letter from his uncle, he spends the majority of the letter asking about members of his family and his home. The bottom of the letter is marked in purple pencil that it has been censored. The letter is in a "Soldier's Mail" envelope with a "Passed by Censor No. 6376" stamp on the middle left of the envelope. A number of other letters, mementos, including a late 19th century photograph album, checks, a 1865 copy of the History of the First Regiment of Tennessee Cavalry by William Thurman, Louisville, KY Hart & Mapother Printers, etc., are also included in the archive. Ernest Albert Land, Canadian, (1918-2006) By Candlelight, Oil on masonite Biography from the Archives of askART: Biography from Butler Institute of American Art Ernest Albert Land was born in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. His family moved to New York City when he was three years old, and by the time he was nine, he had already decided on his life's work. His enormous natural talent pointed into the direction all his schooling was to take, until interrupted by World War II. During his military service in which he served as an ensign, he traveled extensively to most countries of the world. This included two secret expeditions to the North Pole in 1941, the Invasion of Casa Blanca, the invasion of Cherburgh and the invasion at Normandy Beach. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to his easel and the task of making his place in the art world. His first painting in the realistic vein was accepted by Grand Central Galleries in New York City. It received recognition by the art critics and led to his life membership in that gallery. His first solo show in New York in 1954 was soon followed up by many more throughout the country. Many of his works have been reproduced in Switzerland and distributed throughout the United States. Mr. and Mrs. Land now live in Falls Church, Virginia, where he has his studio. He is painting full time. Mr. Land is dedicated to the techniques of the early masters. Like the artists of the past who depicted the seeable, touchable world of their time, here is a contemporary artist, highlighting the essence and uniqueness of our times. Today is a world of 'break-throughs,' with new horizons opening upon an ever expanding future. He asks : what are we breaking through to?, what do these new horizons reveal? His paintings, highlighting an imagery strange and magical, reflect the deepest realities of our time. He expresses a balance of the old and the new and the eternal in the new. Through his eyes, our times are not only a confusion and an upheaval, but also a revolution and a revelation. His techniques uf super realism and trompe l'oeil, greatly enhance his rendition of the strangeness of our time, where reality seems to exist beyond the third dimension. Yet with all his seriousness his work has a light and whimsical touch as if to say : where to now little man? HIs work is included in the collections of Kress, French Co., American Telephone and Telegraph, IBM, Boston College, Grumbacher, Lederle Laboratories, Andrew Mellon, Coca Cola, Co. , Equitable Life Assurance, Aldophe Menjou, Hildegarde, Steinway Co., and Serge Rubenstein. Provenance: Gift to Georg Ruckmann (1870-1961) of Lübeck, Germany, from a doctor that fled to Turkey before World War I; by family descent to a private New England collection. Ruckmann was an administrator of a hospital in Lübeck. N.B. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by Erol Makzume, and the work was documented in Elisa Zonaro's photo archives. We wish to thank both Erol Makzume and Cesare Mario Trevigne for their assistance with cataloguing the lot. Zonaro was born into a Paduan family of modest means, and had he not shown artistic promise as a child, would have been apprenticed into his father's bricklaying trade. (1) He was fortunate to attend a technical school near his hometown, and was later sponsored by a local noblewoman to attend the Accademia Di Belle Arti G. B. Cignaroli in Verona for his artistic training. After graduation, Zonaro moved to Venice where he opened his own studio on the Grand Canal. He developed a fine reputation for picturesque views and genre scenes which was bolstered by ducal patronage. Despite his commercial success, Zonaro grew dissatisfied by the late 1880s with his lack of artistic growth and sought ways to distinguish himself from his contemporaries. At this juncture, he made two critical decisions-the first was to take a year-long sabbatical in Paris to learn new techniques. Zonaro's works created after this intensive year are considered to be in his mature style, where "the product of his training in French Impressionism, Venetian coloring, and Neapolitan realism were fused." (2) Zonaro's second life-changing decision was to move to the city of Constantinople. He was fascinated with the exotic vision of this outpost of the Roman and Ottoman Empires, and opened a studio there in 1891. Through his skill and the promotional efforts of his wife and former pupil Elisabetta (Elisa) Pante Zonaro, he was introduced to the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid II (1842-1918) who selected him as his court painter in 1896. Zonaro remained at the court until Abdul Hamid II's regime was overthrown in 1909, and returned to Italy thereafter. 1) https://www.faustozonaro.it/biografia.html 2) Ibid.

Lot numbers 3-17 in this auction are from the collections of the prominent historical figures Dr. Victor Chi-tsai Hoo and his brother Ambassador Hu Shi Xi, dignitaries from the Republic of China, and themselves descending from an influential family of diplomats. Their father, Hu Weide, was the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Qing Dynasty, and briefly served as the Premier of the Republic of China after Duan Qirui was ousted from Beijing in 1926. He was instrumental in bringing democracy to the Qing Dysnasty and was a member of the Chinese delegation at both the Treaty of Versailles as well as the Hague Peace Conference. . Victor Hoo, coming from such an illustrious family, continued in his father's footsteps as a diplomat for the Republic of China. Having represented China at the League of Nations, Dr. Hoo was later named Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1945, and later became the highest ranking Nationalist Chinese at the United Nations, becoming Undersecretary General. The only member of the higher staff of the United Nations to speak all five official languages fluenty (Chinese, Russian, English, French, and Spanish), Dr. Hoo was socially adept and extremely active on the international stage. He was both a participant and contributor representing the Republic of China's wishes at the most seminal events of the 20th Century, including the Versailles Treaty, the San Francisco Conference creating the UN, Dumbarton Oaks, and many others. It is perhaps for this reason, that Chiang Kai Shek ordered Dr. Victor Hoo to remain at office at the United Nations as long as possible, which he did until the end of his life, at the age of 77. . PROVENANCE. Awarded to U. N. Under-Secretary General Victor Chi_tsai Hoo (1894-1972). thence by descent in the family
