JAMES DUANE, SIGNED REVOLUTIONARY
JAMES DUANE, SIGNED REVOLUTIONARY WAR DOCUMENT This important pay order document to James Duane (1733-1797) is boldly written and clearly readable. For service to the state of New York, Duane set out from Livingston Manor to attend a NY state Constitutional Convention in White Plains New York; meeting with others from the highlands and then going to Fishkill, New York and then back to Livingston Manor. This pay document lists his days of work from August 30, 1776 to February 1777 which was confirmed and paid by James Livingston (American, 1733-1797), of Livingston Manor. Document then proceeds to show he then received his monies from Peter Van Brugh Livingston, who was the first state treasurer of New York. Signed J, Duane and witnessed by John J. Meyers. James Duane was a delegate to the First Continental Congress, a signer of the Articles of Confederation, and a member of the Congress of the Confederation from 1781 until 1783. Duane became Mayor of New York in 1784 and served in that office for four years. He was elected to the New York Senate where he served from 1782-1785 and from 1788-1790. On September 25, 1789, President George Washington nominated Duane to the Federal District Court in New York and following confirmation by the United States Senate, Duane held that judicial office until he resigned due to ill health in 1794. REVOLUTIONARY WAR, INDEPENDENCE
REVOLUTIONARY WAR, INDEPENDENCE HALL PAY DOCUMENT Revolutionary War pay order for repairs to the Assembly Room of the Statehouse, later to be named Independence Hall. ADS, 1 page. Dated February 13, 1779 in Philadelphia to State Treasurer David Rittenhouse (1732-1796), famous astronomer and clockmaker. To pay Charles Schultz on order sixty pounds, two shillings and six pence, in full for sundry iron work for the Assembly Room. Darkly signed by John Bayard (1738-1807), as Speaker of the House of the Assembly. Schultz receipt at lower right. Both Bayard and Rittenhouse were members of the Committee of Safety and the Constitutional Convention. Bayard was a member of the Sons of Liberty and as Colonel served at the Battles of Brandywine, Germantown and Princeton. The fledgling American government returned to the State house in July 1778 after the British occupation seven months earlier. The State house later became known as Independence Hall due to the keen interest shown by the Marquis de Lafayette in his visit to Philadelphia during his farewell tour in 1824, wanting to see the 'Hall of Independence' which he deemed sacred to the cause of liberty. The Assembly Room to which this document refers, so important to American history, is pictured on the reverse side of the US two-dollar bill, from the original painting by John Trumbull entitled 'Declaration of Independence.'
