This leather / green cloth bound gold gilt hardcover exhibits slight edges scuffing, marbled painted top, bottom and fore edges, intact pages exhibits age tanning and slight foxing. Measures 5.75"W x 8"L x 1.25"D approximately.

MOUNTED BUILDER'S HALF MODEL OF THE SHIP "GREAT ADMIRAL" AMERICA, CIRCA 1869 BACKBOARD 15.5" X 79".MOUNTED BUILDER'S HALF MODEL OF THE SHIP "GREAT ADMIRAL", America, Circa 1869, Hull built up in 27 lifts alternating with mahogany spacers. Applied stem, keel and rudder post. Topsides and backboard painted black. Dimensions: Backboard 15.5" x 79". Provenance: West Sea Company, Old Town, San Diego, California, January 1997, purchased by Richard Kelton.The Kelton Collection of Marine Art & Artifacts.Great Admiral was a wooden full-rigged ship built in 1869 by Robert E. Jackson, East Boston, to the design of W.H. Varney. Her principal dimensions were 215'6" LOA x 40'2" beam x 25'6" draft, and tonnage 1497 NRT. Her figurehead was a likeness of Admiral Farragut, thus the name "Great Admiral". She was principally engaged in the China Trade, making runs to the West Coast and on to China. Later, she was making runs to Australia. She foundered in a gale in December 1906, and the survivors were picked up by the British ship Barcore of Liverpool. The ship's cook and the cabin boy were the only casualties.

SIOUX INDIAN LEDGER ART DRAWINGS AND EPHEMERASioux Indian ledger art drawings and ephemera related to Dr. V. T. McGillycuddy, a surgeon and Indian Agent for the Pine Ridge Indian reservation, 5 3/4" x 5". McGillycuddy was the attending physician for Crazy Horse following his fatal stabbing and provided medical care for the survivors of the Wounded Knee Massacre. Included in this collection are his and his wife's business cards, the letter of permission to attend the survivors of Wounded Knee issued to him by General Wilson Miles, two excerpts from Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper , an envelope sent by McGillycuddy with a ledger art Indian chief on verso, other telegraphs and communications involving McGillycuddy and newspaper clippings.

STEAMER "SACRAMENTO" SHIPWRECK LETTER BY A.G. SMITH 1872 EACH SHEET 8" X 5".STEAMER "SACRAMENTO" SHIPWRECK LETTER BY A.G. SMITH, 1872, Ten-page letter written by A.G. Smith of Connecticut, signed with the initials "AGS", to his sister Mernie, of Groton, Connecticut, on December 5, 1872, postmarked January 4, 1873. Narrates his voyage from New York to California and describes first-hand his experiences during the wreck of the sidewheel steamer Sacramento off the Baja Coast in December 1872. Dimensions: Each sheet 8" x 5". Provenance: Douglas Stein, Past on Paper, Ledyard Connecticut, 2002.The Kelton Collection of Marine Art & Artifacts.Notes:A.G. Smith departed New York aboard the steamer Henry Chauncy , crossed the Panama isthmus and joined Sacramento at Panama City for the voyage to San Francisco. Smith began writing his letter at sea December 5, 1872, describing to his sister his experiences thus far, including crossing the Panama isthmus. That night, Sacramento struck a previously uncharted reef approximately 3 miles from San Geronimo Island off the Baja Peninsula and about 200 miles south of San Diego. The survivors spent six days on San Geronimo Island before being rescued by the steamer Montana and taken to Los Angeles, where they arrived safely December 15. Smith finished his letter, including the shipwreck narration, on board Montana and mailed it after arriving in Los Angeles. The "unknown" reef off Geronimo Island has since been named Sacramento Reef after the first vessel known to have wrecked there. The Sacramento 's 268 tons of general cargo and $1,500,000 in gold coin were salvaged.

DIRK PRESENTED TO "OLD GLORY" CAPTAIN WILLIAM DRIVER 19TH CENTURY LENGTH 25.75".DIRK PRESENTED TO "OLD GLORY" CAPTAIN WILLIAM DRIVER, 19th Century, Captain William Driver, from Salem, Massachusetts, is credited with nicknaming the American flag "Old Glory". Dirk's hilt with an eagle-form pommel and a carved whalebone grip. Extensively embellished gold and leather scabbard engraved on one side "G Wodsworth to Capt Driver" and on the other "P. Augier Calcutta". Blade unmarked. Dimensions: Length 25.75". Provenance: The Collection of Chuck and Jan Deluca.Notes:In 1824 William Driver's mother and other women of Salem sewed a 24-star flag to commemorate his appointment as a master mariner and captain of his ship the Charles Doggett . He coined the flag "Old Glory", and it accompanied him on his 20-year career sailing to China, India and throughout the South Pacific. He also had it with him when he rescued 65 descendants of the survivors from the H.M.S. Bounty from Tahiti to Pitcairn Island. He later settled in Nashville, Tennessee, and when the state seceded from the Union, Driver had "Old Glory" sewn into a quilt for safekeeping. "Old Glory" is now exhibited at the Smithsonian Museum of American History in Washington, D.C.
