JUDITH BROWN "RED TREE" MONUMENTAL METALJUDITH BROWN "RED TREE" MONUMENTAL METAL SCULPTURE Judith Brown (American, 1931-1992) "Red Tree," monumental welded metal sculpture, whimsical twisting and turning form with branches bearing leaves, originally conceived as scenic design for a benefit dance performance for El Salvadorian children called ?Flowers from the Volcano: An Evening of Dance and Poetry? at BAM [Brooklyn Academy of Music]. The program included performers from the companies of Martha Graham, Alvin Ailey, and Bill T. Jones, among others. Overall: 120" H x 90" W x 48" D. Note: The tree was stage left throughout the performance. As dancers performed and the poetry of the children was read (in between the dance pieces), the removable leaves of the tree were brought and placed symbolically onto the trunk, representing growth and renewal.

AMERICAN PAINTED MECHANICAL 'A HEARTFELTAMERICAN PAINTED MECHANICAL 'A HEARTFELT GOODBYE' WHIRLIGIG37 x 6 ft. 5 1/4 in. x 5 1/2 in.
Note accompanying this lot from the artist: "For a Captain when it was time to set sail at the wharf saying good bye to his family was a tough and heartfelt time, with the sailors absent for such a long time, Nantucket's women were obligated no only to raise the children but also oversee many of the island's business. It was the women for the most part that kept the Nantucket community functioning during the great 19th century New England whaling era. This piece is carved from 100 year old Pine boards, antique copper and iron is incorporated into the piece, and buttermilk paint is applied in numerous layers to give the piece a time worn appearance.
When the crank is turned it sets life in motion, the ship moves slightly back and forth, the sperm whale below moves about with a slight movement. The husband holds out his hands while his wife holds a heart in her hand. The children move about and look on and say their goodbyes. The angel above watches over the family during his maiden voyage and pray for a safe return home to his loved ones".
