NEWS OF AMERICAN UNREST IN THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE WITH SUPPLEMENT (London, 1774), considerable space is given to an "Account of the Rise of Ill-Humour in America," which describes meetings being held throughout the colonies regarding taxes, loyalties, and tea. A Rhode Island paper goes so far as to encourage the colonies to unite against the British with the slogan "Join or Die!" The "Supplement to the Gentleman's Magazine: for the Year 1774" reviews Edmund Burke's speech in Parliament regarding American taxation and outlines the proceedings of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia.

The Tea-Tax-Tempest, or the Anglo-American Revolution, 1778, Paris, early state before the fully engraved English titles and those in Dutch and French (Fowble 99, Cresswell 738), plate 16 x 19 in. sheet 17-1/8 x 20-7/8 in.; 18-5/8 x 22-3/8 in.
Note: This is an allegorical composition projecting a magic lantern image of an exploding teapot, the flames below fanned by a cock, symbolizing the French (removed from later impressions). To the left of the teapot, the British flee, while to the right the Americans chase. The projection is viewed by four figures representing four continents: a Native American, an African, a fainting woman with a shield symbolizing Europe and a consoling woman with an incense burner symbolizing Asia. Paris-based engraver Carl Guttenberg adapted a 1774 engraving by John Dixon entitled "The Oracle," making a number of alterations that drastically changed the message.

"Muster Roll of the 34 th Regiment of Foot in the Service of the United Colonies" , "The Hon.bl Brigadier Genl John Thomas Esq Colonel, The Rev Mansfield Chaplain, John Bailey Esq Liet. Coll Commandant, Lemuel Cushing Surgeon, Seth Ames Mate"
With columnar lists of men organized by rank and Company. Organized on April 23, 1775. The regiment was also known as the 2 nd Massachusetts Regiment and was drawn from volunteers from the Plymouth County area, as well as members of the original Minutemen companies who fought at Lexington and Concord, and African American freemen. John Thomas would be promoted to Brigadier General in June of 1775. Dating this document to the period of time in which he would command the regiment during the siege of Boston, the fortification of Dorchester Heights, and the evacuation of the British on March 17, 1776. After which, he was promoted to Major General and would die of smallpox on June 2, 1776.
Provenance : Directly descended in the Hallowell family of Nantucket.
