TWO COFFEE SHOPS NEWS PAPER HOLDERS, ALSO CALLED NEWS P...-Ca. 1900 -The newspaper holders are slightly different in size but have the same design. They are fashioned of fruitwood with flat shafts and steel rod clasps secured by retractable brass fasteners operated by feathers built in the elaborately turned handles. -The holders survived in their entirety and retained pretty much if not all of their initial period character. Both originates from the legendary Café Schwarzenberg in Vienna, a living monument to the Ringstrassen cafés that initially catered to 19th-century Viennese society. -The Viennese coffee house “Das Wiener Kaffeehaus” is a typical institution of Vienna that played an important part in shaping Viennese culture. Since October 2011 the “Viennese Coffee House Culture” is listed as “Intangible Cultural Heritage” in the Austrian inventory of the “National Agency for the Intangible Cultural Heritage”, a part of UNESCO. The Viennese coffee house is described in this inventory as a place, “where time and space are consumed, but only the coffee is found on the bill.” -In 1983, the tradition was revived when Viennese coffee houses celebrated their 300th anniversary and many Viennese started to remember the unique qualities of their coffee houses. -Hs. 5” x 1 ¼”, O.Ls. 35” v& 30 ½” -$200-$300

Rare Sharps New Model 1859 "Coffee Mill" Carbine.
Serial # 62835 One of the scarcest and most sought after of all Civil War era Sharps carbines are those altered with the experimental grinding system set into the buttstock. All of these were experimental with work performed at the St. Louis Arsenal in 1864 to 1865. The carbine itself is a standard Model 1859 .52 caliber percussion with a 22" round barrel, oil finished walnut stocks, saddle ring bar on left side, military Lawrence patented rear sight with post and blade front. Left side of frame has 1848 patent date. All metal is a smooth grey patina with proper Sharps barrel stamp, minor freckling with some pitting on block and cartridge groove. The walnut stocks are very good, proud to metal, with no cracks or chips. No visible cartouche but "No. 2" stamped on right side of wrist and the top of comb. There is some minor abrasion on left side of stock. Fine bore and a perfect action. We have disassembled the mill attachment and the parts are stamped with the number "2" as well. The three milled attachments to include; the base (and both side plates) are made of brass and are similarly stamped with "2" on the inside. Every aspect of this carbine, with regards to the milling device have been inspected for purposeful manipulation with none to be noted. The "2" stamped on the parts and the stock are vintage, the aging and lack of cleaning clearly visable. This carbine was taken to the Denver Gun Show and was vetted by two of the most prominently known Sharps experts in the country, as well as several other antique gun experts. We are well aware of the controversy surrounding these carbines and it is a forgone conclusion that any Coffee Mill Sharps that were not in a collection prior to 1900 can only be vetted based on close inspection. According to historians, the Coffee Mill Parts remained at the St. Louis Armory until the 1920's, at which time, an employee took a number of them and utilizing original Sharps carbines, installed the original milling works at that time and sold them as such. We offer the following information. All of the milling brass parts are original and vintage except the crank handle which is a period replacement. The internal parts and the "2" stamp is also vintage. The aging of the parts is original. This carbine was consigned from an 85 year old gentleman from Massachusetts, whom he had three weapons in his possession, none of which he had any definitive information as to how long they had been in the family or where they were acquired. To include a Colt 1860 Army long flute and a Model 1849 Pocket Model revolver, both of which were manufactured prior to 1865. Therefore, this is either an original Coffee Mills Sharps as assembled in St. Louis circa 1864, or, at the very least, assembled by the St. Louis employee in the 1920's, with no way to determine which is correct. For the sake of accuracy, the Coffee Mill Sharps was an experimental model intended to grind corn, not coffee. Given the originality of the carbine, along with its aged parts and the circumstances surrounding its consignment, we feel this is an extremely fine example of one of the most talked about Civil War weapons ever manufactured. With no real track record on pricing, this is an extremely desirable martial arm that will find its own level. The documented Coffee Mill Sharps residing at Springfield Museum exhibits an iron grinding system, not brass as is the example. Since actual documented pre-1900 collection examples are virtually non-existent, we have no way to ascertain whether all were iron or brass, just that Springfield's example is iron. Additional information per Wayne Gagner Springfield Research.A Springfield Armory manufactured carbine was manufactured long after the production period for the older model Sharps Carbine.
The commander of the Springfield Arsenal in Springfield, Massachusetts authorized the manufacture of a Sharps Carbine with the coffee mill attachment on the stock.
The parts were taken from an old stock of parts from Springfield Armory storage and assigned to a senior armorer personnel to be made in off hours and lunch time. The Armory commander approved the weapon and included the instructions that original parts with price of each part, and a survey of serial numbers was to be made. The serial number was chosen to be outside of any known serial numbers in all Armory records including the Master Armorer’s Notebook.

Original Wall Mounted Coffee Grinder by Zassenhaus: For your consideration is this wall mounted coffee grinder by Zassenhaus, made in Western Germany circa 1949-1990. This is a good midcentury coffee grinder from before the abolishment of the Western German statehood. The grinder shows a farmhouse decoration to the porcelain jar and an aluminum grinder unit. The glass jar shows one cup maximum ground beans. The grinder also shows a brass inlaid crest of the company, stating 'original Zassenhgaus'. Zassenhaus is a German purveyor of finely crafted hand mills for coffee, spices, pepper, and salt. Although not as well known in North America, the Zassenhaus brand has been around for almost 150 years, with many of their older products selling as high-priced antiques. The condition of this coffee grinder is fair, with a good example of oak wall mount shield and no obvious signs of damage to the porcelain jar. The measurements of this coffee grinder is 15 3/4" x 7" x 7 1/4".

Y A RARE SCOTTISH GEORGE II COFFEE URN
ATTRIBUTED TO JAMES KERR, EDINBURGH, CIRCA 1730 The ovoid body raised on three cabriole legs, with a chased border of shells and diaper work around the shoulder and cover, with a vacant cartouche (previously engraved), with later spirit lampHeight: 31cm, weight (all in): 52.9ozNote: This newly discovered mid 18th century Edinburgh coffee urn adds to a small but important group of Scottish silver, arguably without compare. Bringing the survival to approximately seventeen (with eleven in institutions), this urn fits perfectly within the Golden Age of Edinburgh silver. With no parallel elsewhere in England or the rest of Europe, where the inspiration for this design emanates from is still the subject of debate, although the basic shape may derive something from the earlier practice of mounting ostrich eggs in silver.During the period of these urns manufacture (circa 1719 - 1767) and particularly within the height of their manufacture (circa 1730 -1750) the number of standard pouring coffee pots is minimal. This and a reference in the John Rollo, Goldsmith Edinburgh, account book 'To one Coffe poot 62 oz 2dr at 7sh 6pe per oz - £23 - 5 - 8' and the survival of this piece adds great weight to the theory of their use being for coffee, rather than as hot water or tea.Their functionality also is worthy of note, when it is considered that within contemporary accounts coffee is considered medicinal and should 'be drunk as hot as one can bear' the shape combined with the use of a burner (now lacking in most of extant examples) would have meant the contents could have been kept hot.The design of these urns seems to vary more by the period than maker, with the flair of the maker coming in the outline shape of the body; they can vary from elongated to more compressed squat forms. All but one of the surviving urns are of Edinburgh manufacture and by a small but highly regarded group of makers. The exception is a Dundee marked example by Alexander Johnston, which while marked by him and the body likely made by him, the cast elements (legs, handles etc.) appear to emanate from one of the Edinburgh makers, likely James Kerr. Research continues but it would appear that all seventeen urns could have these cast elements emanating from as few as three original workshops, although the number of makers marks struck to them is greater. While the marks to this example are now all but obliterated, it does seem possible to suggest a maker, comparing stylistic trends of shape, decoration and cast elements. The most likely candidate appears to be the highly regarded Edinburgh silversmith James Kerr, who would latterly go into partnership with William Dempster becoming Kerr & Dempster. On earlier examples Kerr’s mark is prolific and on later examples the partnerships maker's mark is also seen.Perhaps most telling is the delicately flat chased decoration and diaper work to the neck which is reminiscent of Kerr’s work on bullet teapots of the same period. The cast legs with their acanthus clasped tops, with plain rat tail rib and the raised hoof feet are also a mould recognised as coming from the Kerr workshop. Access to prepared moulds in the workshop must suggest a place of manufacture similar to the other urns featuring these patterns. The crossover of makers using the same moulds and patterns for handles, legs and spigot does add some confusion to these theories, but the majority of urns using these moulds can be tied to the Kerr (and latterly Kerr & Dempster) workshop. It is also worth noting that James Kerr was responsible for the creation of the Hopetoun tea and coffee service (originally commissioned with an ovoid coffee urn, now lost) and similarities can be seen with the light diaper work of the 18th century and hoof feet of the spirit kettle held in the collection of The National Museums of Scotland. This piece certainly pre-dates his partnership with William Dempster in 1751, so it seems safe to ascribe James Kerr’s name alone to this work. This urn is also rare in that it was made with an integral placement for the spirit lamp burner. Please be aware that this lot contains material which may be subject to import/export restrictions, especially outside the EU, due to CITES regulations.
