- BIBLE LEAVES FROM KJV AND GENEVA BIBLES
BIBLE LEAVES FROM KJV AND GENEVA BIBLES CIRCA 1600Bible leaves pair framed under glass. The first leaf is from a 1619 printing of the King James Bible, only eight years after the first edition was printed. This leaf was printed in London by Bonham Norton (1565-1635) and John Bill (1576-1630) in partnership with the King's Printer, Robert Barker (?-1645). Robert Barker's father Christopher Barker (c. 1529-1599) had obtained for his family the exclusive right to print royally sanctioned English Bibles during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1533-1603). The King James Bible was initially commissioned for official use in the Anglican Church (Church of England) as a replacement for the 1568 Bishop's Bible and is the most printed English translation of the Bible of all time. This leaf is from the book of Deuteronomy 7:26-9:5. The frame measures approximately 19" in height by 15-1/2" in width with the sight image measuring approximately 8-1/2" in height by 6-1/2"in width. The second leaf is from a 1582 printing of the Geneva Bible and was printed in London by the Queen's Printer, Christopher Barker (c. 1529-1599). The Geneva Bible is widely considered to be the first 'study Bible' because it was the first to cross-reference verses with one another. The first edition of the Geneva Bible was printed in 1560 but was not printed in England until 1576. This leaf is from the book of Tobit (Tobias in the English vernacular), which was one of several books removed from the Biblical canon during the Protestant Reformation and was assigned instead to an Apocryphal indices in many early Protestant Bibles, including the Geneva Bible. This leaf features Tobit (Tobias) 6-7:18. The frame measures approximately 19" in height by 15-1/2" in width with the sight image measuring approximately 8-1/2" by 6-1/2".
