19th C. Mexican Wood Santo - Santiago Matamoros: Latin America, Mexico, ca. 19th century CE. A wonderful carved-wooden statue of Santiago Matamoros, also known as Saint James The Greater or Santiago the Moor Slayer, riding a horse over two figures on a rectangular plinth hand-painted in hues of forest and olive green, sky blue, crimson, yellow, brown, peach, tan, grey, black, and white. Dressed in a cloak and a pointed hat or helmet, the bearded rider sits upright, presenting a naturalistic visage with petite red lips, a pointed nose, and glass eyes beneath an arched brow. He grasps a sword in his left hand as his horse raises both front legs as though about to leap over the two figures below. The white horse is adorned with a blonde mane and tail, a black saddle, and an applied leather collar. Below the noble steed, one figure dressed in a blue robe raises his hand, attempting to protect himself from being trampled, while the second figure lays on his back, dressed in a red tunic and green shorts. Size: 8. 875" L x 4. 5" W x 13. 75" H (22. 5 cm x 11. 4 cm x 34. 9 cm). . This figure is based on a prototype found in European paintings of Santiago Matamoros - triumphant upon a white horse, dressed in lavish vestments, wielding an intimidating sword and trampling over many severed heads of Moors. Similar iconography also constitutes the central section of a 7 panel altarpiece in the Chapel of the Alcazar of Segovia. Santiago Matamoros was one of Christ's disciples who is believed to have founded the Christian church in Spain. In addition, a myth of the Middle Ages describes how years after his death, Santiago Matamoros miraculously resurfaced in the battle of Clavijo in 844. During this battle, he assisted the Christian King Ramiro I of Asturias in his victory over the Moors who ruled Spain between 711 and 1492. . . Santos played an important role in bringing the Catholic Church to the New World with the Spanish colonists. These religious figures were hand-carved and often furnished with crowns, jewels, and other accessories, usually funded by religious devotees, and were used as icons to explain the major figures - Mary, Christ, and the saints - to new, indigenous converts. Likewise, they served as a connection to the Old World for Spanish colonists far from home. They became a folk art tradition in the Spanish New World, from modern day Guatemala to as far north as New Mexico and Colorado. Many of them were lovingly cared for over the years, with repairs and paint added as they aged, and played an active part for a long time in the religious life of their communities. . . Provenance: private Glorieta, New Mexico, USA collection. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. . . A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. . Found in an old Marion home with a collection of diaries, primarily from the Robbins family, Lydia Hammond, Lucian Hammond, and Benjamin Robbins. The diaries span from 1862 to 1917, skipping some years, 20 total diaries. In 1862, Lydia Hammond's diary states, "Dr. Breck of Springfield, sent to assist in the surgical care of the wounded soldiers after the Battle of Pittsburg Landing" (Shiloh). Another entry states "terrible battle, ground was a continuous sea of mortar two feet deep". She also writes that there were "nearly 8,100 buried on the field, and two-thirds were judged to be rebels. Joseph was wounded 3 times, shot 3 times in the leg", and he walked himself to the hospital. One of the last entries states that rebel prisoners were taken to Fort Warren, Nov. 1861. The Mason Slidell incident is mentioned, and they are taken to Fort Warren as prisoners, Nov. 24, 1861. The most important diary is Lucian Hammond's (Carver, MA), 1862. He was a member of Company C, first Battalion, stationed at Fort Warren in 1862. Fort Warren is in Boston Harbor. He talks about guard duty, weather, and taking lessons in artillery tactics. Then he leaves for Washington at Camp Alexander, one half mile from the capital, and he writes about other camps nearby. He then marched and joined McLellan's army 20 miles from Richmond and camped and slept on the ground. In another entry he was given a rifle taken from a rebel in battle. The June 21st entry mentions that it is a wet snowy day, rum is brought in, several soldiers drank too much and they were put in the guard house. The commotion caused such a disturbance that the captain drew his sword and slashed one of the drunken men in the head. In July, he moved South by boat to an unknown location. July 20th he mentions feeling unwell due to dysentery ("diarrhea"), and July 26th was his last entry, it reads "my health poor, have not been on duty for one week". Lydia Hammond mentions in her 1862 diary that they received his remains, and he is recorded as having died. Trunk also contains a letter from Lucian Hammond, April 18, 1862, while stationed at Fort Warren, Boston. There is a pamphlet titled "The Poetic Present", dated 1842, dealing with Creation. There is a partial early 19th c. catechism, a book titled "Select Remains of the Reverend John Mason" 1812, an early 19th c. handwritten recipe book, a 17th or 18th c. book titled "The Dreadful Justice of God in Punishing Sin with Sin". "An Introduction to Spelling and Reading" by Abner Alden, 1824. Also found in the same estate is a soldier's record, 6th Regiment, Company E, Mass. Infantry. It lists all participants. HIGH GRADE DOG HEADED SWORD CANE-Ca. 1880 -Sizable figural Siam horn handle of a natural greenish toned color fashioned in a well-proportioned L-Shape with a longer vertical stem extending in a dog head liven up by a pair of inset glass eyes. Streamlined, the canine singularizes by the beautiful combination of a forwards extended muzzle balanced by a pair of long ears stretching in the opposite direction to lean on an integral belted neck collar set an angle. -The handle comes on a stepped and warm toned malacca shaft with a white metal ferrule and a precise and still smooth working locking device. Activated by a push button discreetly concealed in the chased and gilt collar, the handle detaches from the shaft in a straight pull to reveal a 13 ½” tall square-shaped steel blade of a tapering, sleek profile and with a fearsome pointed tip. -Singular, the blade distinguishes by a superb twist to its central part as well as extensive and very fine etching on its four faces. Noteworthy is the fabled statement that the wounds of a twisted blade never heals. -This cane is marked by a discreet profile that makes it a perfect disguised, defense weapon and enjoys the merits of a superb feel of age. The passage of time endowed it with the indefinable and cherished personality of great collectables. -H. 5” x 3 ½”, O.L. 35” -$900-$1,200 -The swordstick was a popular fashion accessory for the wealthy during the 18th and 19th centuries. During this period, it was becoming less socially acceptable to openly carry a sword, but there were still upper-class men routinely trained in swordsmanship who wished to go armed for self-defense. Swords concealed in ladies’ walking sticks and parasols were also not unknown, as it was even less socially acceptable for a lady to carry a sword, or publicly admit that she knew how to use one. -Soon after their introduction, other „gadget canes“ became popular. Instead of a blade, these would hold the tools of one’s trade, compasses, and even flasks for keeping alcohol. There were special swordsticks that had guns installed in the hilt. But the use was unlikely. -In many jurisdictions the ownership, carrying, manufacturing or trading in sword canes is restricted by law.

PAIR OF FAMILLE ROSE 'COVERT EIGHT IMMORTALS' PLATES

(1925-2018)Major General Sir John Swinton began his military career in 1944 with the Scots Guards, rising in rank to Major General in 1976. He was also Brigadier of the Queen’s Body Guard for Scotland (Royal Company of Archers) in 1977, and retired from Army life in 1979. With his strong military background, he was appointed Deputy Lieutenant for Berwickshire in 1980 and Lord Lieutenant from 1989 to 2000. A high point of his tenure was escorting the Stone of Scone back to Scotland in 1996.The Swinton family history and ownership of land in Berwickshire can be traced to the early part of the 12th century, when Ernulf de Swinton received one of the first private charters recorded in Scotland which confirmed his property from David I of Scotland (1084-1153). This is one of two original charters of David I kept in the cartulary of Durham; both are to Ernulf and also refer to Ernulf’s father (Udard), grandfather (Liulf) and great-grandfather (Eadulf) as holding the land before him. This would make Eadulf the first landowner of Scotland whose ownership could be proved, and means that the Swinton family would by this hypothesis be one of only three (the two others being the Arden and Berkeley families) that could trace its unbroken land ownership and lineage to before the Norman Conquest, making it one of the oldest landed families in Britain.Kimmerghame itself was the site of an earlier house, the home of Sir Andrew Home in the 1730s. The lands and estate of Kimmerghame came into the ownership of the family of Swinton in 1776 when Archibald Swinton of Manderston married Henrietta Campbell of Blythswood in Glasgow. This older house was demolished and rebuilt in the early 1850s, the architect being the celebrated David Bryce, who employed some materials from the older house. Bryce’s Scots Baronial house was substantially damaged by fire in 1938 and only partially rebuilt. The family still retains Kimmerghame and its contents.Captain Archibald Swinton (1731-1804) went to India in the service of the East India Company as a surgeon. He reached Madras in 1752 and took part in the campaigns being waged between the French and English Companies for supremacy in the south. He also took part in an expedition 1756-57 to Negrais in Burma. He reached eastern India for the first time in 1759 when he arrived at Ganjam in Orissa and from there went on to Calcutta. He also transferred from being a surgeon to an ensignship in the Company’s Bengal army. When Archibald Swinton left the Company’s service at the end of 1765, he took with him a letter from the Emperor to King George III asking for help to reseat him on the throne of his ancestors, since Clive would not do so unilaterally; Swinton took a munshi with him in case the answer should be written in Persian. So ‘Captain Swinton, bringing with him the Munshy (sic) (and including in his baggage the large Indian jars, the Indian pictures, Chinese pictures painted on glass, numberless ivory, silver and crystal handled arms, jewels, Persian books, etc. etc.), sailed from India …’ The important group of Indian paintings and other works of art are now in the care of the National Museum of Scotland having been accepted by the nation in lieu of inheritance tax.The Swinton family have had strong connections with the Army and the legal profession. Part of their impressive collection was sold at our saleroom in Five Centuries: Furniture, Paintings and Works of Art sale on 23 Feb 2022.

Colored lithograph of a saddened archetypical Lady Liberty holding the Constitution. Shows a 4 1/2" tear to the bottom, a 1" tear at top.
