Remington Beals First Model Pocket Percussion Revolver .31 cal. 3'' octagonal barrel S/N 425. Marked on top of barrel F. Beals Patent June 24 56 May 26 57. The top of frame is marked Remington's Ilion. Gutta percha grips. Condition: All lines are very sharp with a nice brown patina. Markings are readable and clear. Cylinder has some brown staining mixing with pitting. Grips are fine with a small scratch at the top of left side.
SMALL SEGMENT OF A MACHINE GUN BELT FROM ONE OF THE GUNS IN VON RICHTHOFEN’S FOKKER DR I FOKKER TRI-PLANE 425/17. Gray/tan, herringbone woven, cotton fabric containing two riveted metal spacers from von Richthofen’s machine gun belt. A series of these riveted spacers creates the individual pockets for each round of ammunition. Three rivets secure the spacers, one on each side of the belt. Lt. F. R. Rawlinson, No. 3 Sqdn, Australian Flying Corps, originally salvaged a larger section of this belt, and removed this section before donating the larger piece to the Canberra War Memorial. This segment became part of the Charles Donald collection. The envelope mailed from Australia containing this section, a certification of authenticity from Charles Donald to Carisella, and a photograph of the larger section are included. A photograph of the larger section appears on page 231 of Who Killed The Red Baron? CONDITION: Good for its age with the metal spacer bars showing light rust in spots. ALTIMETER BACKING PLATE FROM COCKPIT OF VON RICHTHOFEN’S FOKKER TRI-PLANE DR I 425/17. This plate was separated from the altimeter which was removed from the DR I by Fred O. Hyder, 51st Battn. Australian Imperial Force, then broken up and given to other members of his platoon. The markings on the plate are "AUSGEGLICHEN" (calibrated) "G. LUFFT. STUTGART" (maker and his location); "HÖHENMESSER FÜR FLUGZEUGE" (altimeter for aircraft) "No. 4810" (its serial number). On the reverse Hyder, while on leave in London, had his service number (3986), name, battalion (51st, AIF), and the legend "Taken from Capt. Baron Von Reishstofen (sic) April 1918" engraved. On 7 October 1966, Hyder made a formal legal declaration that the backing plate was his and in his possession since 1918. A photograph of the altimeter backing plate appears on page 141 of Who Killed The Red Baron? A photocopy of the document and four orig pertinent letters accompany the lot.
