Cardew was the first British apprentice at the Leach pottery, St. Ives, Cornwall in 1923. He shared an interest in slipware with Leach and was influenced by the pottery of Shoji Hamada. In 1926 he left St. Ives to restart the Greet Potteries at Winchcombe in Gloucestershire. With the help of former chief thrower Elijah Comfort and fourteen year-old Sydney Tustin, he set about rebuilding the derelict pottery.

(2000), The Incomplete Circle: Eric Atkinson, art and education, Scolar Press, London, p.44.Terry Frost arrived in Cornwall in 1946, staying in a caravan at Cabris Bay and then a house on Quay Street, St. Ives, before returning to London and the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts in 1947. He re-visited Cornwall over the next few summers before settling in St Ives in 1950. Barbara Hepworth gave him a job as her assistant at this point, alongside fellow artists Denis Mitchell and John Wells, offering him a steady income and structured working week. It was around this period that Frost began his series of paintings of the quayside. David Lewis, art historian and Barns-Graham’s husband, commented:These “paintings were definitely beginnings for Frost. Boat shapes, masts, riggings, water, sky, rippling, all became free compositional elements of mass, lie, colour, texture and movement rocking to and fro ... because the boats are never still, never static, and so you’ve got this terrific sort of up and down motion, this leaning over that.” When Ben Nicholson first saw works from this series, he exclaimed ‘you’ve got on to something that can last you for the rest of your life’ and it remains true that these shapes were to recur in Frost’s work throughout his career, even as his choice of colour grew bolder and compositions more abstract.Grey, Black and White feels completely abstract at first glance but with further consideration, the overlapping elements emerge to reveal a quayside scene. Frost remains preoccupied with form and texture, restricting his colour palette to focus on depth and volume. The resulting composition is quintessentially mid-century and St. Ives, as well as a microcosm of Frost’s wider artistic considerations of the period.

§ AKIKO HIRAI (JAPANESE 1970-)
LARGE MOON JAR, 2017 painted artist's mark, grogged stoneware, rugged and cracked porcelain deposits with running ash glaze48cm high, 43cm diameter (18 7/8in high, 16 7/8in diameter)Provenance:The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh, Akiko Hirai: In Praise of Shadows, 2017.Known for her exploration of the contrast between rough clay and smooth, translucent glaze, Akiko Hirai is one of the most prominent contemporary ceramicists producing work presently. Born in Japan in March 1970, Hirai originally studied cognitive psychology before she was inspired to take up ceramics following her discovery of the Korean moon jars in the British Museum. She relocated to London in 1999 and enrolled at University of Westminster in 2000 and then Central St. Martins in 2002 to study ceramics. From 2004 until 2015, she taught ceramics at the Kensington & Chelsea College in London, where she was the head of the ceramics department for the final three years.Hirai describes her work as a response to human senses, with each piece being made up of unique deep textures, cool colours, and simple forms to allow the viewer to understand her works in their own terms. The way in which she blends Japanese and British pottery techniques results in her celebrated, asymmetrical natural forms that are distinctly contemporary and evoke the inspiration she finds in her urban environment along with everyday scenery. Motivated by the excitement of turning her visualised ideas into reality, she embraces imperfection, irregularity, and chance in line with the Japanese tradition of Shibui that refers to an aesthetic of simple, and unobtrusive beauty. The resulting ceramics are at once subtle and quiet yet shocking and unexpected.
