- ESTERIO SEGURA MIXED MEDIA - "EL CONQUISTADOR"
ESTERIO SEGURA MIXED MEDIA - "EL CONQUISTADOR" (1997)Esterio Segura (Cuban, b. 1970). "El Conquistador" watercolor, ink, and graphite on paper, 1997. Signed and dated on lower right. Titled on lower left. A large-scale composition by Cuban contemporary artist Esterio Segura titled "El Conquistador" and mounted in an attractive custom frame. The piece features a male Conquistador figure standing in profile while staring at a flame burning in his extended left hand and raising a short sword in his right hand. Blue and yellow feathers crown his head, and he presents a handsome bearded visage. He wears a metal chest plate adorned with crossed arrow motifs, a golden belt buckle decorated with the head of a bull with eating utensils attached to the belt, yellow shorts, and lower leg wraps, one securing a knife. Indeed the Conquistador has a double meaning. One, referring more obviously to the Spanish, the other to the people of Cuba who managed to survive all the conquistadors who arrived in Cuba, thus making them equally conquistadors. The figure on the cart sporting yellow plumes represents the native Taino Indians who were later wiped out by the Spanish. Interestingly, the figure stands in a modest raft-like structure perhaps representing the primitive aspects of the island with oars extending from the sides, eight red flags decorating the front end as well as a license plate that reads "PARTICULAR HBO1102 CUBA" flanked by miniature palm trees. An intriguing painting with layers of political/sociological subtext. Size: 47.5" L x 33" W (120.6 cm x 83.8 cm) Size (frame): 51.5" L x 36.5" W (130.8 cm x 92.7 cm)
About the artist: Born in Santiago de Cuba, Esterio Segura graduated from the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana. His works which include painting, drawing, sculpture, and printmaking address Cuba's socio-political history with themes such as immigration, isolation, and freedom. Segura's artworks have been collected by the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), New York (NY); Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx (NY); Museum of Latin American Art, Long Beach (CA); and Museum of Fine Arts, Havana, Cuba among others.
