Rare and unusual Chippendale mahogany bombe cased slant-front desk, Massachusetts circa 1760; attributed to Benjamin Frothingham, Charlestown, MA cabinetmaker, 1734-1809. Massachusetts Bombe Furniture is the tour de force of American cabinetmaking. Found only in Boston and its cultural dependencies, this curvilinear form is the essence of the Baroque Aesthetic and can be found in related decorative arts such as silver and porcelain of the mid 18th century. The earliest attempts at this form exhibit straight-sided drawers in a "tulip-shaped" case, while in later efforts the sides of the drawers mirror the swell of the carcass. A bombe secretary desk of similar form in the collection of The Department of State is signed by Benjamin Frothingham and dated 1753. Although this particular example displays claw and ball feet instead of the more usual ogee bracket feet, it does have the unusual and peculiar waist molding and similar amphitheater interior found on the State Department piece. 43 1/2 in. H.; 44 in. W., 24 3/4 in. D. Provenance: Mrs. Murray Steinberg, 1949 - present Israel Sack Colonel Guy W. Walker, b. 1898, Beverly, Massachusetts
