Rare Arie Meaders Rooster Dish: Arie Meaders (Georgia, 1897-1989) covered ìchicken bowlî comprised of a bowl with figural rooster lid, both having a light tan alkaline glaze with cobalt accents to the rooster body, face and tail. Incised initials ìA Mî to the base along with a written museum catalog number ì68. 216 GAî to the underside of lid and base. 6 3/4_H x 6_ W. 20th century. Provenance: From the collection of Malcolm Watkins (1911-2001), head curator of the Department of Natural History, Smithsonian Museum. Artist history: Potter Arie Waldrop Meaders (1897-1989) was born the third of twelve children in Macon County, NC. When her family moved to North Georgia she met and married Cheever Meaders. By the 1950s, the Meaders folk pottery trade started in 1892 was failing. Arie stepped in and began creating and producing colorful and innovative designs that brought a revival to the craft. In 1978 she was honored alongside her son, Lanier, by the Library of Congress in Washington, DC with Meaders Pottery Day. Bright red lacquer has been applied over black lacquer on this early to mid-1900’s covered bowl. The lid is decorated with pattern circles and accented with a braided silk handle. The interior is black. Measures approx. 3"H x 5"D. Deep red egg-shaped box features a rooster and a chick in gold, red and black pigment. Glossy black lacquer interior. Measures approx. 3-1/2" x 5-1/2". Small black papier mache plate is decorated with gilt pigment depicting two geisha's with mountains in the background. Display hardware is attached to the plate. 364. Collection of Japanese Lacquerware, ca. Mid 20th Century
This collection includes a total of six bowls and nine plates. There are three bowls with red exterior and gold interior decorated with iris flowers, butterflies, and Manchurian cranes. Two out of three red lacquer bowls are hand-decorated in gilt with tree branches, and one is decorated with a bird on the colorful tree branch. All three red bowls are marked "Made in Occupied Japan" and bears a "YS" monogram in a rectangular cartouche. All bowls measure approx. 2" x 4-3/4" in diameter. Six out of nine plates have red exterior and gilt interior decorated with grapevines, daffodils, an autumn tree branch, butterflies, and cranes. These plates are not marked. Three plates are with black exterior, and are decorates with an autumn tree branch, rooster on a branch with white blossoms, and grapevines. Maker's stamp on bottom. All plates measure approx. 6-3/4" in diameter.

Rare Arie Meaders Rooster Dish Arie Meaders (Georgia, 1897-1989) covered ìchicken bowlî comprised of a bowl with figural rooster lid, both having a light tan alkaline glaze with cobalt accents to the rooster body, face and tail. Incised initials ìA Mî to the base along with a written museum catalog number ì68.216 GAî to the underside of lid and base. 6 3/4_H x 6_ W. 20th century. Provenance: From the collection of Malcolm Watkins (1911-2001), head curator of the Department of Natural History, Smithsonian Museum. Artist history: Potter Arie Waldrop Meaders (1897-1989) was born the third of twelve children in Macon County, NC. When her family moved to North Georgia she met and married Cheever Meaders. By the 1950s, the Meaders folk pottery trade started in 1892 was failing. Arie stepped in and began creating and producing colorful and innovative designs that brought a revival to the craft.
