Anasazi Four-Mile Pottery Bowl with Thunderbird: Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Anasazi (Ancestral Puebloan), Central Anasazi, Southern Cibola, White Mountains Red Ware, Four-Mile type, ca. 1325 to 1400 CE. A marvelous pottery bowl exhibiting a hemispherical form with a round yet stable base and circular, rolled rim. Adorned in black and white pigments atop a vibrant orange-red ground, the ancient vessel boasts the abstract image of a thunderbird on its interior. The avian creature presents a stylized form with long, curved wings, a slender body, a sizeable, triangular tail, and a petite head with 2 annular eyes, 4 extending crest feathers, and an elongated, tapered beak. Interestingly, the body of the bird is comprised of geometric designs that served as symbols for the ancient Ancestral Puebloan people: his triangular tail represents power, the step motif on his tail signifies a cloud, the linear striations are for earth or land, the zigzags represent lightning, and the dots on his crest feather and below his tail symbolize rain. A thick black band with a white border encircles the interior rim of the gorgeous vessel. Alternatively, the exterior of the vessel displays a broad register of a Vitruvian type of scroll pattern just below the rim. Size: 9. 25" in diameter x 4" H (23. 5 cm x 10. 2 cm) . . Anasazi Pinedale Polychrome Bowl with Snake: Southwestern USA, east central Arizona/west southern New Mexico, Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi)/Mogollon culture, ca. 1175 to 1325 CE. An impressive pottery bowl presenting a hemispherical form with a round yet stable base and circular rim. Adorned with white and black pigments on an earthy red ground, the elegant vessel has been intricately decorated with an abstract design of spiral, linear, step, and geometric motifs along its interior walls. Alternatively, the exterior is encircled by a white serpent, outlined in black with a slender, angular body and an arrow-shaped head. While they serve as remarkable decorative elements, these beautiful designs often held great significance to their makers. The symbols of this vessel appear to center around the theme of weather; the spirals are water, the dots on the snake are rain, the zigzag striations are rivers or lightning, and parallel lines represent earth. The Anasazi artisans of St. Johns were the first Anasazi potters to make polychrome pottery during the prehistoric period. Prior to this, pottery was either black-on-white or black-on-red. Size: 11" W x 5" H (27. 9 cm x 12. 7 cm). . The Mogollon people created pottery from iron-rich volcanic clays using the coil-and-scrape technique. The type is known primarily from the Pinedale Ruin, a settlement of approximately 200 rooms located near modern-day Show Low, Arizona, that was sadly lost to bulldozers in the 1970s. The people who lived at Pinedale would have been at the edges of the cultural sphere governed by Chaco Canyon, and by the time they created this bowl, lived a sedentary agricultural lifestyle. A bowl like this one may have held ground corn. . According to the Office of Archaeological Studies Pottery Typology Project, "Pinedale Black-on-red and Pinedale Polychrome were defined by Haury and Hargrave (1931). These types reflect technological and stylistic changes reflected by many of the White Mountain Red Ware forms produced during late thirteenth and early fourteenth century. The Pinedale Black-on-red and Polychrome types most commonly occur at sites in areas just below the Mogollon Rim in Arizona. " . . Provenance: private Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired before 2004. . All items legal to buy/sell under U. S. Expected nicks, abrasions, and scratches throughout, commensurate with age. Otherwise, excellent with lovely remaining pigments.

C. 1890-19 ROSE MEDALLION BOUILLON BOWLS & CREAMERPresented in this lot are two (2) Rose Medallion Handled Bouillon Bowls w/ lids and one (1) Rose Medallion Handled Creamer, circa 1890-1919. Provenance: Private collection, Big Sky, Montana. All three pieces feature the "China" import stamp as required in 1890. In the 17th century, different patterns were designed in order to satisfy the high demand for Chinese ceramics in Western Europe. Perhaps the most popular and desirable of the patterns, Chinese Rose Medallion, perfectly showcases the uniqueness and recognizability of Chinese export porcelain. Called “polychrome enameled,” this type of porcelain consists of a ceramic body decorated in only blue pigment and then painted under the glaze in a variety of colours and depictions. The pattern, extremely recognizable, consists of a central medallion that often features a bird of a peony. Outside of the medallion, four or more panels typically encircle the body of the ceramic, covering the piece in a flat narrative sequence. Figures, trees, birds, butterflies encircle the porcelain ware, leaving the viewer to discern the intricate details within each panel. The dominant colours of the rose medallion pattern often consists of vibrant pinks, greens, reds, blues, and sometimes softer pastels. If the Rose Medallion piece doesn’t have any marks or characters to identify itself, then it is most likely a piece made before 1890. Some of the highest quality Rose Medallion pieces utilized gold to highlight the finer details, and even some of the more intricate depictions on the surface. Bowls and creamer are in good overall condition, slight chipping and scuffing observed on pieces. Bowls measure 2.75"H x 4" diameter; creamer is 4.5" diameter, 5.5"H approximately. Weight approximate 1lb

3 LATE BYZANTINE POTTERY SGRAFFITO BOWLS - SEA FINDNear East/Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 13th century CE. A gathering of 3 pottery bowls with a decorated interior that is incised with birds and linear patterning. The bowls are very similar, they rest on a ring foot and the broad dish flares upward to a thick rim and shallow basin. Several narrow bands of repeated wavy and triangular motifs encircle the interior body, with an interlocking or spade shaped abstract floral motif in tondo. Remains the white glaze is still present over much of the interior surface. Byzantine pottery workshops that created glazed ware for domestic use based their designs on vessels made of silver or other precious metals. They used the technique called sgraffito, with the design incised through a white slip coating to reveal the red clay body beneath. These bowls were made and exported throughout the Empire, and have been found in numerous shipwrecks, especially in the Aegean Sea - the mineral encrustations from marine creatures attests to their time spent underwater. Size of largest: 10.25" W x 3.25" H (26 cm x 8.3 cm)
