DANA RIPLEY POND (AMERICAN 1881-1962) A PAINTING, "PORT...DANA RIPLEY POND (American 1881-1962) A PAINTING, "Portrait of a Girl Knitting," 20TH CENTURY, oil on canvas, verso an old Meredith Long & Company label; 35 1/2'' x 29 1/2'', framed 44 3/4'' x 38 3/4''. Note: Originally from Winchester, MA, Dana Ripley Pond was one of the foremost portraitists of his day. He was a member of the National Academy of Art and the Salmagundi Club. He traveled widely in Europe and was in France when WWI broke out. He joined the Red Cross Ambulance Service and later served as an officer and interpreter during the Paris Peace Conference. In 1918 he was allowed to use one of the halls at Versailles as a studio for painting portraits of allied commanders. He did portraits of General Pershing, Marshall Petain, General Bliss, Admiral Benson and Colonel House.
