Tennessee paint-decorated pie safe, poplar and pine, two doors with star-punched tins, shelved interior over dovetailed drawer, cut nails, original paint with multiple layers green over blue over red, attributed to Tennessee, 19th century, 57 x 40-3/4 x 17-1/4 in. Some elements dry scraped, some repainting especially to top, patches and some retouch at back of case sides, other cracks, wear and paint loss throughout.

Third quarter of the 19th century.

Overall very good condition with expected wear and losses including staining to top, losses to knobs of doors. Interior of drawers and base have been painted.

PUNCHED-TIN PIE SAFE. Southern, possibly Virginia , mid 19th century, cherry and poplar. Geometric tins on the doors and on the sides, and retaining old red paint on the case and traces of green on the tins. Minor imperfections. 44 1/2"h. 54"w. 18"d. The broad proportions of this pie safe relate it more closely to Southern examples than to Midwestern examples. Additionally, the tins here are similar to tins on other pie safes attributed to the Rich family shop (Wythe County, Virginia) or on safes from other areas but known to incorporate tins purchased from the Rich family. See Moore, "Wythe County, Virginia Punched Tin: Its Influence and Imitators," in The Magazine Antiques, September 1984, pp. 601-613, particularly plate IV and figure 12, that each have Rich family tins with similar central diamonds, and plate 23 for a Tennessee safe with Wythe County tins bearing similar corner designs.

Each side with two matching punched tins and the whole resting tapered feet. 52 1/4" H x 55 1/4" W x 15 1/2" D. Circa 1860.
Condition:
Back right tapered foot replaced, gallery with evidence of insect damage and losses to left top and returns. One drawer with partial replacement of underside. Wear to edges of tins on front doors.
