- CARVED & POLYCHROMED BUTLERAn exceptional
CARVED & POLYCHROMED BUTLERAn exceptional carved butler tip tray in polychrome paint, good wear and condition -- excellent details in the face and the figure is crisply dressed in a pale blue suit, complete with a white handkerchief, white shirt, and red bowtie. This important full bodied sculpture is attributed to noted Québec carver Jean Baptiste Côté due to the highly skilled carving, appropriate age and, most significantly, the long limbs of the figure and carving details that closely resemble other known carvings by Côté including le pêcheur, le chasseur, and le chanteur in the collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Exceptional details. Some damage to his thumbs. Québec, last quarter 19th century. H: 36.5"; W: 10". Field Collection.
