Two NOGI awards, dated 1961 and 1963
Honduran mahogany
25" x 9" x 5 1/2" and 23 1/2" x 8" x 5"
Vero Puccio was a New Orleans based master carver who designed and hand-carved the NOGI Award statuettes beginning in 1959. The NOGI Awards, given by the Academy of Underwater Arts and Sciences, have been called "the Oscar of the ocean world." Later NOGI statuettes were created as cast polywood and lucite.
Each of the trophies are signed and dated to the base. The trophies are modeled as a female and male form, the female dated 1961 and the male 1963. The plaques have been removed from each, but the female statuette is likely to have been awarded to Mary Edith Lillis, the only woman to win the award in the NOGI's first five years.
Condition
Plaques were previously removed from each, leaving some residual staining and uneven finish. Both statuettes have a few minor dings and scuffs. The male statuette has a visible repaired break on one flipper.
