MARK TWAIN PASSENGER CRUISE LIST TO ITALY, 1903 Mark Twain, Samuel Clemens, a fine, colorful and uncommonly found example of the passenger list of a cruise he took with his family to help get Olivia to a more healthful welcoming place due to her health issues. The Princess Irene Left New York October 24th, 1903 owned by the North German Lloyd Steamship company, 4 p.p.,clearly listing the Clemens family of which included Himself, wife, 2 daughters and a maid. Olivia's health began worsening and, advised to keep a distance from her husband in order to keep from getting overexcited, went months without seeing him. However, Twain frequently broke the rule and secretly saw her in order to exchange love letters and kisses. By the end of 1903, doctors' advice led the Clemens family to move to Italy for the warm climate where they resided in a rented villa outside of Florence. The passenger list also includes, Mrs. Augustus St Gaudens, William Greene Roelker, Wilson Levering Smith, Mr. Waldo Lincoln, and many others.

MARK TWAIN HANDWRITTEN LETTER, 1901-1903, FRAMED Mark Twain/Samuel Langhorne Clemens (American 1835?1910) handwritten and signed letter to Mr. Seaman, Louis Livingston Seaman (b.1851 - d.1932) dated January 18, "I thank you so much, but I shall doubtless be on the other side of the world at that time with my family. Shall be, if our plans do not fail us. I hope you will have a good time. Very sincerely yours, SL. Clemens", on Riverdale on the Hudson mourning stationary, framed. Note:,The mourning stationary may be related to the death of the Twains' eldest daughter Olivia Susan Clemens (American 1872?1896). He and his wife rented the former home of publisher William Henry Appleton, Wave Hill, located at Riverdale on the Hudson, New York, from October 1901 through 1903. This letter references his trip to Italy in 1901.

Clemens wrote from Lang?s Hotel in Heidelberg to his wife Olivia Langdon Clemens using his affectionate nickname for her, Livy. Some content includes, ?We have had a long & most enjoyable day in a carriage up to Hirschhorn & back with Smith" The Smith referenced is Edward Meigs Smith (1827-1889), American consul to Manheim, Germany appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant.
