*FRANZ SODIA OVER UNDER DOUBLE RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. SN 8089. Beautiful, post-war, Austrian made rifle with 23-5/8" superposed bbls with matted solid rib, pedestal mounted caterpillar front sight, and 2-leaf express rear sight. It has double bite Greener bbl extensions and double lugs. It has sgl trigger & extractors. Rib has the makers name & address. Mounted with extremely beautiful, skip-line checkered, French walnut with 3-pc forearm and capped pistol grip stock with straight comb & shallow cheek piece, 13-1/2" over its orig black composition buttplate. Box lock receiver is coin finished with Merkel style double scalloped back edge with Merkel style reinforcements on the sides. It is beautifully game scene engraved with vignettes of two very detailed Cape Buffalo in a veld scene on the left side, two male lions in a woodland scene on the right scene, and a bull elephant in a woodland scene on the bottom, with flourishes of foliate arabesque patterns in the other areas of receiver. The opening lever, top tang, trigger guard and forend iron are engraved to match. Bbls and buttstock have sling swivels which contain a permanently mounted, thin, black leather sling, probably from the factory. Accompanied by information from the consignor which states that this rifle was built for Mr. William Hodgdon, of Ogden, Utah, of the famous gunpowder family, in the 1950's, which is borne out by the 1958 date on the rifle. Apparently Mr. Hodgdon was a personal friend of Mathieu Browning, nephew of internationally famous John M. Browning, who both served as intelligence officers in Europe during WWII. Mr Hodgdon told consignor that at the end of the war he and Mr. Browning did an inspection tour of the Franz Sodia facility and decided to order identical rifles at a later date. Mr. Hodgdon & Mr. Browning made several safaris to Africa before Mr. Hodgdon suffered a debilitating injury. Having been a graphic artist prior to WWII, Mr. Hodgdon personally designed two of the three scenes engraved on this rifle, with the third scene of the buffalo coming from a photograph taken on of his safaris. Consignor purchased this rifle directly from Mr. Hodgdon just prior to his succumbing to cancer. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Appears to have been fired, but if so very little. Bbls retain about 98% of their orig factory blue, and the receiver all of its orig coin finish. Wood is sound with a minor handling & storage nick or two, and retains virtually all of its fine, hand rubbed oil finish. Mechanics are crisp. Brilliant shiny bores. Sling is fine. The workmanship of this rifle is of the very finest quality with near perfect wood to metal fit. 4-56772 JR227 (10,000-15,000)

A gorgeous ensemble of 12 porcelain Chinese Export plates, all of octagonal form and impressively adorned with a rococo design known as "Double Peacock Dinner Service" in lustrous gilding and vibrant glaze in "Famille Rose" hues of emerald, lime green, magenta, red, yellow, pink, orange, and black. Each plate features a lovely central tondo of 2 peacocks in a stony landscape surrounded by several large blooming flowers. A fleur-de-lis border surrounds the tondo, as the periphery of the plate features 4 swirling floral motifs and an outside border of abstract designs. Size (all the same): 8. 875" W x 1" H (22. 5 cm x 2. 5 cm). . Plates like these examples were made in China and sold by the East India Company. Only about 5, 000 dishes of the "Double Peacock" design still exist throughout the world and they are specially collected in Brazil, Portugal, and England. VERY RARE COLT PRESENTATION DOUBLE RIFLE. Cal. 50-110. SN 26. One of the most rare of all Colt firearms is the double rifle. With only approximately 40 ever having been made, most were presentations or gifts from Caldwell Colt who fostered and promoted the concept of the double rifle at Colt. Patterned after the Model 1878 double bbl shotgun, but built on a lighter frame, our rifle has 27-7/8" bbls with a dovetailed ivory bead front sight, a slot blank in the rear seat and a Lyman loop tang sight mounted to the top of the wrist. The bbls have a straight, flat, matted rib with the company name and address. The left bbl has left-hand twist and the right bbl has right-hand twist rifling. The lockplates are each marked "COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. CO." and have light border engraving. It has beautifully scalloped fences and border engraved hammers and trigger guard with some light patterns on the bottom of the receiver and forend iron. It is mounted in nicely figured English or French walnut wood with black insert, checkered, schnable tip, splinter forearm and round knob stock with smooth steel buttplate and raised side panels around the lockplates. The left side of the butt stock has a 2-3/8" silver plate, inscribed "Blair D. Taylor / U.S.A." and there is an oval initial plate on the bottom. Research to date has disclosed that Blair Dabney Taylor was a cadet at the Virginia Military Institute (VMI), class of 1866, during the Civil War and fought at the Battle of New Market, 15 May 1864. After the war he finished his education and became a physician and spent the rest of his career as a Union military doctor. He died in 1930. Thus far, no connection between Caldwell Colt and Mr. Taylor has been established. Additional research should produce good results. Accompanied by a copy of page 22 of the March 1933 American Rifleman magazine, which contains a brief article by Raymond W. Barth, regarding this rifle and its provenance. Mr. Barth states that he purchased this rifle directly from Mr. Taylor's daughter along with two other rifles. He does not indicate when or where he bought it, but does state that in 1931 he traveled to Hartford and took the rifle to the factory to be examined, and further, that no records exist regarding its manufacture or disposition. He states that the wood is "Italian Walnut". Apparently in about 1948 this rifle came into the possession of Mr. Fred P.L. Mills of Old Deerfield, Mass., which generated serious interest on his part and which prompted him to conduct research on these rifles after which, in 1953, he published a 51 page booklet detailing what information he learned. In the book Mr. Mills states that this rifle was made for a military officer who ordered it to shoot buffalo while stationed out west, but was transferred to Atlanta apparently before this occurred. Coupled with the fact that Mr. Barth purchased this rifle in the Atlanta area leaves a reasonably solid trail of provenance. Also accompanies is a letter dated May 6, 1967 from Larry Wilson stating that he would like to purchase this rifle should Mr. Owens decide to sell it in the future. Of interest to the collector is the fact that Eldon received a Colt from Mills under his will and later (1962) purchased the remainder of his estate. This rifle was #1 on the inventory and the most valuable gun in the collection. Eldon kept a dozen of these guns and they are also offered in this auction. Also accompanied by two rounds of unprimed Bell 45-110 brass. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbls retain about 98% strong original blue, the lockplates retain most of their bright case colors and the receiver 30-40% faded case colors with the balance turned silver. Trigger guard retains about 95% original bright niter blue. Wood is sound with usual light handling and use marks and retains most of its original finish. Mechanics are crisp with brilliant shiny bores. 4-52406 JR742 (40,000-70,000)

Remington Model 95 42 Rimfire Over Under Derringer: Included in this lot is a superb condition Remington Over-Under Double Derringer, also known as the Model 95 Remington Derringer. A one of the most iconic pocket hide-out weapons in American history, the Remington Double Derringer was chambered for the short . 41 Rim Fire cartridge and manufactured from 1866-1935. All had 3” round superposed barrels that tip upward for loading or extraction of fired cases. The barrels were locked in place for firing by a rotating lever on the right side of the frame. The firing pin alternated from top barrel to bottom barrel automatically. Designed by innovative firearms inventor, William H. Elliot, the Double Derringer became the best, most widely known and recognized of American cartridge derringers of the latter half of the 19th century. The fact that this distinctive firearm was made for 69 years speaks well of its exceptional quality and compact design that found favor with men and women on both sides of the law. It is known that General Douglas Macarthur was carrying a Remington Double Derringer when he returned to the Philippine Islands during World War II. This example that was made c. 1890s exhibits a beautiful bright, original factory nickel finish and original Remington hard rubber grips. Standard finish on this model was blue with nickel special order and is especially scarce in this fine state of condition. The barrel top is stamped with the correct Remington Arms Co. Ilion, N. Y. markings. The barrels lock firmly and the hinge appears solid and tight (hinges on this model are usually broken and loose). This is a popular collector’s handgun made even more popular by its use in numerous movies and television shows. John Wayne pulled a Remington . 41 caliber Over-Under Double Derringer and shot a “highwayman” attempting to rob him in the opening scene of the classic movie “The Shootist”. A popular model with collectors, the Remington Model 95 is becoming scarcer and more difficult to obtain, especially with the factory nickel finish and in this superior state of preservation. This firearm qualifies as a Curio & Relic, and requires FFL Transfer or NICS Background Check.

MCMVII (1907) High Relief $20 Wire Rim A phenomenal strike has rendered one of the most impressive 1907 High Relief Roman Numeral Saint-Gaudens double eagles that we have seen in quite some time. Liberty appears virtually animated the folds of her gown amplified textured and billowing. The rays of the sun stand bold as does the Capitol Building with even the minute columns clear and this generally crisp relief extends to the reverse as well where one will find the eagle in ample definition. We note a medium orange-to-greenish gold hue a color so trenchant and deeply set as to seem inseparable from the satiny and ubiquitous mint bloom. As is common to both proof and business strike formats the surfaces on both sides of this Gem reveal a texture seemingly unique to the High Relief double eagles - magnified inspection reveals countless swirling as-made raised die striations reflective of the constant maintenance and care bestowed upon the dies which struck these coins. Meanwhile in our admiration of this lovely feature we did find the occasional tick none of which merit individual distinction. With an original delivery of just 12 367 pieces and arguably one of the most electrifying designs to have ever appeared on any U.S. denomination the entirely redesigned High Relief double eagle is possibly the most widely pursued and immediately recognizable issues regardless of type or series. Indeed this mintage figure and spectacular aesthetic appeal is a formula that consistently yields hefty premiums at auction. We expect interested bidders to spare no expense when attempting to acquire such a rewarding numismatic treasure.United States President Theodore Roosevelt procured the services of the most renowned sculptor of the era in order to produce an entirely new set of circulating coinage that would rival the zeniths of the Classical period and emblemize the nation's ever-growing prosperity and burgeoning world power. Saint-Gaudens and assistant Henry Hering thus created the High Relief double eagle however because of the tremendous pressure required to raise the designs a wire rim usually formed between the collar and dies and thus stacking an apparent necessity was rendered virtually impossible.
